Sunshine Blogger Award

SunshineBlogger

Nothing like getting an award to bring a ray of sunshine to my day. I had just gotten back from my trip and was really exhausted when I got pinged on Twitter, so big THANK YOU Getter and Margaret for nominating me 😀

As given, every award has a set of tiny rules for accepting it, here are the ones for Sunshine:

Post the award on your blog
Thank the person who nominated you
Answer the 11 questions they sent you
Pick another 11 bloggers (and let them know they are nominated!)
Send them 11 questions

I’m going to combine the two set of questions from the two ladies, so here we go…

Questions from Getter:

1. What was the last movie you saw and loved?

Well, I just saw The Light Between Oceans last night. It’s not a fun movie given the subject matter, but I love the poignant love story and of course it made me cry buckets. It’s wonderfully-directed, gorgeously-shot and expertly-acted… and the heartbreaking story lingered with me long after I saw it.

LightBetweenOceans
2. Name an actor, an actress and a director you would pair in a movie and what genre would it be?

Sam Riley + Naomie Harris in a romantic noir by Michael Mann.

SamRiley_NaomieHarris

3. Last song you listened to.

Great song by a Welsh band, and the video stars my current fave Welshman Aneurin Barnard!

4. Book to movie adaptation you would like to see happening in the near future?

DaughterOfTime RA_Aneurin_DaughterOfTime

I just finished this a couple of months ago. I’d LOVE to see The Daughter of Time adapted as a feature (or TV miniseries). The idea of Richard Armitage as the bed-ridden (ehm) inspector Grant sounds delish… and I soooo want Aneurin Barnard reprising his The White Queen role as Richard III in the flashback scenes.

5. From all the Chris’, which one do you prefer: Evans, Pine, Hemsworth or Pratt?

Though they’re all nice to look at, I don’t fancy any of them in terms of looks. But Chris Pratt has the best personality so I definitely pick him.

6. Name your 3 movie pet peeves.

  • Rude people who uses their phone during a movie in a theater
  • Predictable, cheesy plot you can spot a mile away
  • Amazing actors being underutilized in movies [or not getting enough work!]

7. If you had to choose, what season would you live in forever?

Autumn. Especially in Minnesota with the gorgeous Fall colors!

8. Imagine your pet (or an imaginary pet) had an inner voice, which actors/actress’ voice would he/she have?

Sam Riley’s… in his native Yorkshire accent.

9. You had a really bad day, what book or movie will make you feel better?

Sense & Sensibility. Both the 1995 Ang Lee version and the 2008 BBC version.

SenseSensibilitySenseSensibilityBBC

10. If they were handing out superpowers based on your personality, what superpower would you want and what would you probably end up with?

Oh boy, that’d be a tough one! Well I have an obsessive streak in me & I’m an aspiring screenwriter, so I’d love to have a superpower where I have all the talent, clout & money in the world to make the films I want with the actors/filmmakers I want. What I’d end up with? Utter, massive disappointment that I’ll never get to do any of that 😦

11. Sleep, Marry, Kill:

This is a tough one as I actually don’t fancy ANY of these people (except perhaps Hardy circa Inception), nor do I have strong negative feelings for.

Round 1: Joel Kinnaman, Ryan Reynolds, Dave Franco

Sleep: Reynolds | Marry: Kinnaman | Kill: Franco

Round 2: Jared Leto, Chris Evans, Orlando Bloom

Sleep: Leto | Marry: Evans | Kill: Bloom

Round 3: Paul Rudd, Tom Hardy, Michael Fassbender

Sleep: Fassbender | Marry: Hardy | Kill: none (I mean who could possibly kill Paul Rudd??)

Round 4: Choose between three guys you picked to marry from previous rounds

Marry: Chris Evans (he seems like the most *normal* one I can imagine living with)

Questions from Margaret:

1. Who would play you in a movie based on your life?

Hmmm, I’ve been asked this once before. There’s no Asian actress currently who looks even remotely like me, but hey, you always want someone 100 times prettier, smarter and wittier to play you in a movie right? In that case I picked Rashida Jones… [she’s also got a similar skin tone, height and age as me] 😀

RashidaJones

2. What is your favorite movie ending of all time?

The Dark Knight – Gordon’s speech narrating the scene + the music = absolutely perfect.

3. Who is your favorite cinematic Batman?

Wow, I hadn’t seen this question when I answered #2. So naturally… Christian Bale.

4. What is the funniest movie you’ve ever seen?

I’ll go with a recent one that’ll stand to be a comedy classic: What We Do in The Shadows

5. Your sexiest movie character ever choice?

Even 65 years later, still tough to top Brando in Streetcar Named Desire [fanself]

6. What do you like most about our movie blogosphere?

The movie discussions & fangirl/boy-ing 😀

7. What is your favorite movie blog?

Oh man, too many to mention…

8. Will Sati survive Blade Runner 2?

Ahah, that’s VERY questionable. I’ve advised her to take someone who knows CPR to the movie!

9. What is your most anticipated movie at the moment?

Not a movie, but BBC mini-series SS-GB!

SSGB_BBCminiseries

10. What is the most under-seen movie you love?

Ahah, pretty much everything Sam Riley‘s been in is under-seen. But if I have to pick one, it’d be the Austrian western Das Finstere Tal (The Dark Valley) – review coming next week!

11.What movie character do you identify with?

Sense & Sensibility‘s Elinor Dashwood.

      1. Well, if you say so 😉

        1. Can’t be just one – Ida Lupino, Kathryn Bigelow, Penny Marshall, and Ava DuVernay.

        2. May have to do it come September 7th for these guys: http://www.oscars.org/events/heat

        3. Science-fiction

        4. I’ll surprise myself by saying Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.

        5. Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston and Anna Gunn.

        6. See answer #3.

        7. Knowing (2009) starring Nic Cage (my wife HATES it, too).

        8. In a good way, Hush (2016).

        9. Indiana Jones’ fedora.

        10. Well, since this is fantasy I’d pick my mother’s favorite singer, Sam Cooke.

        11. Hmm…well if I can’t repeat myself with answer #7, then it’s probably Swordfish (2001).

        1. Hello Michael!!

More than one female filmmaker faves, yay!! 😀

Ooooh I wish I lived in LA!! So you got your ticket I presume?

I hope you’re working on your sci-fi script as we speak 😉

I still need to see Knowing! I know you liked that one… oh and Hush too, gotta look into that.

Oh man, I want Indy’s fedora too, we have to fight over that now.

Oy, I’m sorry but I don’t know who Sam Cooke is [quick run to Google] 😛

          1. No ticket (sold out very quickly, natch), but there will be standby line I’ll be getting in (with fingers-crossed).

Sam Cooke is the one who sang & wrote this song, prominently featured in Spike Lee’s ‘Malcolm X’:

            1. Aiyah, so you ARE gonna be waiting in line for Heat! I’m sure it’ll be worth it!

OMG, how could I not know who Sam Cooke is!! Shame on me. What a gorgeous song and beautiful voice, he sounds a bit like Nat King Cole whom I adore (also my late mom’s fave). Thank you for this!

    1. Hi Alex! I’d be willing to line up for Sam Riley but only for an interview, not just an autograph. I think an autograph is worthless but the chance to chat w/ my crush would be awesome!!

  1. Thanks so much for the nomination. I will get my answers in by the end of next week. Some great responses to your questions. I never played sleep mary, kill before but Im pretty sure it’s a fun take on f__ , mary , kill. Of all your choices, I could sleep next to Paul Rudd. He’s a funny guy. I would ask him what it was like to kiss Alicia Silverstone, and Rachel Weiz I have only seen Ang Lee’s version and read a bit of Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters

    1. Hi there Vern! Take your time man.

Yes that game is definitely the same as ‘f__ , mary , kill’ which is tough for me as I don’t have strong feelings one way or the other for any of those guys, ahah. Yeah Paul Rudd would be a fun guy to have coffee with.

Oooh you’ve seen Ang Lee’s Sense & Sensibility? Good for you! That is my all time faves… it has been for a loooong time.

  2. I’m so happy to see you mention The Daughter of Time as a book to movie adaptation. I wasn’t sure at first if you were just being polite when you said you liked it, but you really did! I think Richard Armitage would be great as Inspector Grant. He’s a dish.

    1. Hello Stella! Oh no, I really did like that book! I lent it to a friend of mine who liked it as well. It’s an easy read and fascinating mystery novel. Yes I think RA has been wanting to do a Richard III project (he’s apparently named after him), but honestly I think he’s too tall, too handsome and now too old to play him. But as Inspector Grant he’d be perfect, and he’ll get to participate in a Richard III ‘image rehabilitation’ film.

    1. PrairieGirl

AND about your cast for A Daughter in Time series based on the book… Richard Armitage and Aneurin Barnard, what a magnificent, sexy pair! (fan girl swoon). Thanks so much for letting me read your copy, it was fascinating historical fiction.

      1. If I had all the money & power in the world I’d so make that happen!! Richard Armitage’s been wanting to do a film that rehabilitates Richard III image so I’d think that’d be a film any Ricardian would be pleased about!

  3. Lovely responses. As a Richard Armitage fan I am really intrigued by this Richard III book and if a movie were to be made it would be absolutely perfect for him! You may know that he was named after Richard III himself and has been interested in the mystery of him as well?

    1. Hello Esther! You should read the book, it’s a very easy read. I’ve been obsessed w/ Richard III lately. I just finished another book on him ‘Richard The Third’ which apparently the one that inspired Philipa Langley! In fact I heard about that book from her interview. Too bad there’s no news about the script she’s written on Richard III that I think she wants RA to play.

      1. I have just ordered the book via Amazon. I suspect my husband will enjoy it too. 🙂 Thanks for the tip, Ruth!
There has been talk for years now about a Richard III script, I wonder if it will ever happen. I know Richard Armitage himself has said he’d probably be too old by the time it finally happens. And too tall. 😉

        1. Awesome! I think you will. I’m reading Philipa Langley’s The King’s Grave now, my third Richard III book in a row!

I think RA is also too handsome to play Richard. Well Aneurin is too handsome also but he at least seems the right height and age (perhaps the first actor who’s actually younger than the dead monarch when he was king). That’s why I think if they made this book adaptation, he could still be involved in a film about *good* Richard without actually portraying him.

  4. Pingback: How ’bout this for a Richard project? | The Book of Esther

  5. Who’s your favorite female filmmaker? Sofia Coppola
Which actor/actress would you be willing to wait in line for say, 5 hours, to meet? Judi Dench.
If you could write ANY screenplay, what genre would it be? [Feel free to elaborate if you have a specific idea in mind already] I have a feeling it would be something in the horror genre.
Who’s your favorite male AND female film characters in the past decade? The new Q in Bond and Ryan Stone from Gravity.
Same as above but for TV series/mini-series. Nessa Stein from The Honourable Woman and Tate from American Horror Story.
What film genre you wish studios (Hollywood or otherwise) would make more of? There needs to be more musicals.
Inspired by Dell’s recent Against the Crowd Blogathon, what critically-panned film you’d defend with a passion in the past decade? I know 9 1/2 Weeks often takes a beating, but I thought it was excellent.
What movie you saw this year that surprised you in a big way [whether good or bad]? The Jungle Book, I was skeptical at first but it blew me away.
If you could have a single piece of clothing from any film, which one would you pick? The jacket from Drive.
If you could be James Corden for a day for one episode of Carpool Karaoke, which one musical artist (or actor if he/she is also a singer) would you invite? Jennifer Lopez
What’s your most reliable guilty pleasure movie? DOA.

    1. Hi Vinnie!!

      Thanks for your answers!!

OMG, I’d wait for even 6 hours to meet Dame Judi!!! I bow to her!!

Horror eh? I’m probably too scared to see it then Vin.

Oh I like Wishaw as Q too!

I think musicals is a tough genre to crack, but if they could do a great job I really love it, i.e. Moulin Rouge.

I didn’t know 9-1/2 Weeks was critically panned?? I thought it was excellent too, I was a teenager when I saw it on the big screen!

I too was blown away by The Jungle Book earlier this year, as well as Pete’s Dragon!

Ah yes, that Drive jacket is massively popular.

I LOVE J-Lo’s Carpool Karaoke, she’s sooo beautiful and a cool girl.

DOA, is that the one w/ then-couple Meg Ryan & Dennis Quaid?

      1. From what I read about 9 1/2 Weeks, it got slated by American critics but in Europe it was appreciated more. DOA is not the one you are thinking of, the one I mean is based on a video game.

        1. Hi Vin, well I could see why European critics appreciate that film more. I always thought of how different Mickey Rourke look now, wow.

Ah I see, well I don’t think I’ve even heard of that DOA film then.

            1. Yep, it was his pre boxing days I think. He was so handsome then.

P.S. Hey when you get a chance, check out my top 10 of the year so far, curious which ones you have seen from the list.

  6. Man, I’m so glad you didn’t kill Leto, things are SAVAGE over at Mettel’s blog 😆 How can you people not fancy him? The man is a freak! And he does yoga and rock climbing so he could easily lift me up…I need to be sedated.

I never fancied Brando in that one because his character is a rapist :/ Love your choice for best ending that is one good ending especially with how they hinted at the Joker, they should just shut up and have Leto show up in the ending of Squad with no one knowing he is gonna play the part, the hype would be insane, DAMN YOU WB!

Just for fun I’ll answer your questions

    Who’s your favorite female filmmaker?
    – Patty Jenkins, she our hope for good Wonder Woman movie so that gives her this honor of my answer 🙂

Which actor/actress would you be willing to wait in line for say, 5 hours, to meet?
I’d wait a week without food or sleep to see Boo boo,

If you could write ANY screenplay, what genre would it be? [Feel free to elaborate if you have a specific idea in mind already]
crime thriller romance kinda like first season of Luther with troubled cop and a lovable psycho with Jared and me in mind. Fincher should do something like this. It is a waste…have you seen first season of Luther? It’s magic!

Who’s your favorite male AND female film characters in the past decade?
Amy Dunne or Furiosa for female as for male…Batfleck probably, he is my favorite Batman

Same as above but for TV series/mini-series.
Alice Morgan in Luther and Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It

What film genre you wish studios (Hollywood or otherwise) would make more of?
romantic comedies. Seriously the last great one is Crazy Stupid Love

Inspired by Dell’s recent Against the Crowd Blogathon, what critically-panned film you’d defend with a passion in the past decade?
Hm…not sure. TDKR didn’t get great reviews and it was my favorite of Nolan’s Batman trilogy

What movie you saw this year that surprised you in a big way [whether good or bad]?
Suicide Squad. I’m surprised my eyes didn’t bleed tears.

If you could have a single piece of clothing from any film, which one would you pick?
Keira Knitghley’s green dress in Atonement. No way it would go through my ass and hips but it is lovely

If you could be James Corden for a day for one episode of Carpool Karaoke, which one musical artist (or actor if he/she is also a singer) would you invite?
Jared Leto. We’d sing End of All Days (please listen to that song on youtube I think you may fancy him after hearing his beautiful voice and hearing those sordid lyrics). We would inevitably crash into a tree after I lost control of a car and die together beautifully.

What’s your most reliable guilty pleasure movie?
    Practical Magic!

    1. Hi Margaret!

Well there are a lot of good looking men I don’t fancy, like Gosling, Pine, Affleck, etc. but I think Leto is good looking 😀

Glad to see you answering my questions!!

      – Yes I hope so too about Wonder Woman!
      – Ahah, I already knew your answer to # 2. You’d go a week without sleep or food?? Oh my! I won’t do that for any of my crushes.
      – Crime thriller romance is a genre they definitely need to make more of!! No I haven’t seen season 1 of Luther but I really should as I also like Ruth Wilson.
      – I’m surprised you love Batfleck that much, but he did win me over, just not enough to topple Bale just yet.
      – I think TDKR still gets decent reviews, so I wouldn’t call that one panned by critics.
-Ooooh that green dress from Atonement is gorgeous! It wouldn’t go past my tummy and hips either sadly.
      – Oh I think carpool w/ Leto would be awesome! Though I don’t think you should be driving lady! 😀

  7. Who’s your favorite female filmmaker?

Sofia Coppola. Though I’m starting to give up on her given her recent work. I really like alot of what Andrea Arnold has been doing and can’t wait to see American Honey, so who knows? she might take Coppola’s place.

Which actor/actress would you be willing to wait in line for say, 5 hours, to meet?

Juliette Binoche! Just because she looks like such a nice and down-to-earth person.

If you could write ANY screenplay, what genre would it be? [Feel free to elaborate if you have a specific idea in mind already]

I’m not completely sure but it would have to be some sort of emotionally hard-hitting drama, though I’m not sure I actually capable to writing something like that.

Who’s your favorite male AND female film characters in the past decade?

Michael Keaton’s Riggan Thompson from Birdman and Naomi Watt’s Diane Selwyn from Mulholland Drive.

Same as above but for TV series/mini-series.

Bryan Cranston as Walter White in Breaking Bad and Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison from Homeland (First 3 seasons)

What film genre you wish studios (Hollywood or otherwise) would make more of?

Surprisingly, no genre in particular comes to mind. Mainly because, I think, independent film studios usually take care of that.

Inspired by Dell’s recent Against the Crowd Blogathon, what critically-panned film you’d defend with a passion in the past decade?

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.

What movie you saw this year that surprised you in a big way [whether good or bad]?

Son of Saul. I was absolutely blown away by how it’s impact, which lingered in my mind for days. It’s an uncompromising experience, but at the same time, quite emotionally resonant as well.

If you could have a single piece of clothing from any film, which one would you pick?

I’d love to get my hands on Ryan Gosling’s jacket from Drive.

If you could be James Corden for a day for one episode of Carpool Karaoke, which one musical artist (or actor if he/she is also a singer) would you invite?

    Axl Rose.

What’s your most reliable guilty pleasure movie?

    Godzilla ’98!

    1. Thank you so much for the nomination Ruth. Really means alot. I had fun answering your questions and can’t wait to read you expanded thoughts on The Light Between Oceans. I’m a huge Derek Ciafrance fan and am really anticipating this film. Glad to hear that it did move you, that’s what I’m expecting from the film as well.

      1. Hello Khalid!

My pleasure! And thanks for taking the time to answer my questions!

Sofia’s a hit and miss for me, I hope she makes better films in the future,

Oh miss Binoche would be a dream to meet! Love her!

Emotionally hard-hitting drama sounds great Khalid, we do need more of that!

Man I haven’t seen Breaking Bad nor Homeland, but have heard great things about them.

Son Of Saul sounds truly heart-wrenching and tough to watch. I want to see it but I have to brace myself first.

Ahah, that Drive jacket is massively popular!

Axl Rose eh? I don’t know if he’d make a good Karaoke partner. Boy I used to love Guns N Roses!

Can’t say I have seen that Godzilla movie, now you got me curious!

          1. It’s really tough to find the time to catch up on shows w/ a ton of episodes per season, that’s why I gravitate more towards newer ones that only have 1 season so far. I trust that they are indeed excellent 🙂

  8. Ruth! You are the best. Thanks for thinking of me 🙂

Who’s your favorite female filmmaker? Julie Taymor: I love Across the Universe and Frita.
Which actor/actress would you be willing to wait in line for say, 5 hours, to meet? Leonardo DiCaprio.
If you could write ANY screenplay, what genre would it be? [Feel free to elaborate if you have a specific idea in mind already] historical fiction. Adaptations to my novel!
Who’s your favorite male AND female film characters in the past decade? None come to mind!
Same as above but for TV series/mini-series. Game of Thrones — Brienne of Tarth. played by Gwendoline Christie and Petyr Baelish played by Aidan Gillen
What film genre you wish studios (Hollywood or otherwise) would make more of? Historical fiction
Inspired by Dell’s recent Against the Crowd Blogathon, what critically-panned film you’d defend with a passion in the past decade? None come to mind!
What movie you saw this year that surprised you in a big way [whether good or bad]? Good – The Dark Valley
If you could have a single piece of clothing from any film, which one would you pick? The green dress from Atonement.
If you could be James Corden for a day for one episode of Carpool Karaoke, which one musical artist (or actor if he/she is also a singer) would you invite? Ummm….
What’s your most reliable guilty pleasure movie? Pride and Prejudice. With Keira K. I watch it when I’m depressed, lonely or need a friend….

    1. Hello Cindy! My pleasure, thanks for answering my questions my friend!

I really should check out ‘Across the Universe’ I could see myself liking that one.

Wow, Leo? Really?? I thought you’d say Jeff Bridges!

Yes you should have your novel adapted to screen lady! Perhaps you should start writing it 😉

Glad you’re enjoying GoT, how far along are you, I mean which season?

Ooooh, you like The Dark Valley?? Did you review that one yet? I’m thrilled you saw my crush Sam Riley’s film and loved it 😀

Wow, so many people pick the green dress from Atonement! Margaret had the same answer too and I certainly wouldn’t mind it if it could fit me!

Oh I wouldn’t feel guilty at all watching Pride & Prejudice Cindy, that’s a great film!

      1. I know for a fact you would LOVE ‘Across the Universe’ The sound track alone is wonderful. I loved everything about it. It’s a history of the 60s attached to the history of the Beatles. The color, the sass, the story –just marvelous. GoT? Season 4, last episode! I’ve been buying them on Amazon and just watching them that way. Yes, I watched The Dark Valley just because of your crush on Sam Riley and I thought it was great! That green dress would fit me, but I loved how it looked on Keira. She was mesmerizing. That reminds me I’d like to rewatch it.

        1. I definitely need to check out ‘Across the Universe’ soon! It’s on Netflix so I have no excuse 🙂

Soooo happy to hear you love The Dark Valley!! I was hoping you’d review that one, as I have written a long review for a blogathon that I will post here next week. Wasn’t Sam amazing as the taciturn hero? He’s not as badass as Clint (well who is?) but I thought he was effective because his revenge was so personal.

  9. Sorry for the late response Ruth, I found answering your questions more difficult than I imagined. OK…

    Who’s your favorite female filmmaker?
    Norah Ephron.
Which actor/actress would you be willing to wait in line for say, 5 hours, to meet?
Mmmm… Anne Hathaway? Kristen Stewart? J-Law! No. Michelle. Michelle, Michelle, Michelle.
If you could write ANY screenplay, what genre would it be? [Feel free to elaborate if you have a specific idea in mind already]
    Screwball comedy.
Who’s your favorite male AND female film characters in the past decade?
You know I don’t watch a lot of modern films, but I’d definitely choose Max Rockatansky and Imperator Furiosa.
Same as above but for TV series/mini-series.
Sorry, I have no idea. I’m completely out of touch with TV.
What film genre you wish studios (Hollywood or otherwise) would make more of?
Less re-makes and re-boots, more road movies.
Inspired by Dell’s recent Against the Crowd Blogathon, what critically-panned film you’d defend with a passion in the past decade?
    The Women?
What movie you saw this year that surprised you in a big way [whether good or bad]?
Again Mad Max Fury Road. As an old school Mad Max fan I was sceptical. But I was delighted my cynicism was unfounded.
If you could have a single piece of clothing from any film, which one would you pick?
I’d love one of the silk jackets worn by The Wanderers. I don’t think I could carry it off with my beer belly though!
If you could be James Corden for a day for one episode of Carpool Karaoke, which one musical artist (or actor if he/she is also a singer) would you invite?
Willie Nelson. I’ve developed a liking for Country music over the last few years and Willie is one of the greats. He’s not a bad actor either.
What’s your most reliable guilty pleasure movie?
Hatari! Some of its attitudes are dated, but I still love it.

    Thanks again for the nomination.

    1. Hi Paul! Thanks for answering these.

Oh miss Ephron is my fave female filmmaker too! Plus she’s a fantastic writer.

Of course it’s Michelle, any other answer I’d be disappointed!

LOVE Max & Furiosa, what a great pick! I too was blown away by how good that movie was.

I had no idea you’re into country music. I can’t even tell you one country song, ahah.
