The sun is indeed shining… Sunshine Blogger Award

Nothing like getting an award to bring a ray of sunshine to my day. It has been a pretty hectic few months for me and it’s only going to be crazier the closer it gets to filming time of my short in the Spring. I haven’t got time to blog but hey it’s always fun to do these types of posts, so THANK YOU Vinnie for nominating me!

As given, every award has a set of tiny rules for accepting it, here are the ones for Sunshine:

Questions from Vinnie:

How often would you say you spend on your blog?

Well normally I spend 5-6 hours a week blogging, but nowadays I barely have time for that.

What has blogging taught you?

It taught me to see films with a more critical eye. I also learned a ton from filmmakers/talents I’ve had the privilege to talk to over the years. I also learn from fellow bloggers from their insightful articles/reviews.

Amy Adams or Natalie Portman?

I like both but I find Amy Adams more interesting to watch.

Walks along the beach or romantic meal inside?

Walks along the beach, hands down.

Have you ever written in the nude?

What film had the biggest emotional impact on you?

Can’t name just one. Jane Austen films, esp. Sense & Sensibility, always resonates with me.

But of recent ones, Moonlight and Hidden Figures got me all emotional.

What is your fondest memory from childhood?

Memories of traveling abroad with my late mom and two brothers. She was so full of life and quite adventurous, I’ll treasure those memories forever.

Is there any scene you would love to recreate from a movie?

Interesting question as I just finished the script of my theatre-themed short film. One scene I wish I could recreate is the extraordinarily-long shot in Birdman from the stage to the dressing room done in a single take (or at least seems like it was done in one take).

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

I see myself as [hopefully] a full time screenwriter/filmmaker. I’m making my first short film this year in the hope that I can turn into a feature one day.

What film have you been meaning to watch for a long time, but just haven’t got the chance to?

Boy there are tons. But the one that comes to mind is The Big Sleep, which I was supposed to watch last year as part of The Blind Spot series.

And in the style of Stuff and That, do you think I have a nice bum?

I honestly have no clue what this question is about, sorry!

  1. What’s your favorite movie quote that nobody else seems to notice?
  2. If someone give you a $1 million dollar budget to do a film, what type of film or genre would you do?
  3. In relation to question 2. Which non A-lister would you cast?
  4. Weekend getaway: Paris, London or Rome?
  5. I was going to do a post on this but have no time to finish it. What’s the worst movie you saw in 2016?
  6. What’s one particular movie scene you recently saw that still sticks with you?
  7. Favorite cuisine?
  8. Chris Evans, Chris Pine or Chris Hemsworth?
  9. Name an actor/actress you’ve seen in more than 10 movies?
  10. See above. Name the movies.

Well that was fun! If you feel inclined to answer any of the questions, feel free to leave a comment 🙂

Sunshine Blogger Award

Nothing like getting an award to bring a ray of sunshine to my day. I had just gotten back from my trip and was really exhausted when I got pinged on Twitter, so big THANK YOU Getter and Margaret for nominating me 😀

As given, every award has a set of tiny rules for accepting it, here are the ones for Sunshine:

Post the award on your blog
Thank the person who nominated you
Answer the 11 questions they sent you
Pick another 11 bloggers (and let them know they are nominated!)
Send them 11 questions

I’m going to combine the two set of questions from the two ladies, so here we go…

Questions from Getter:

1. What was the last movie you saw and loved?

Well, I just saw The Light Between Oceans last night. It’s not a fun movie given the subject matter, but I love the poignant love story and of course it made me cry buckets. It’s wonderfully-directed, gorgeously-shot and expertly-acted… and the heartbreaking story lingered with me long after I saw it.

2. Name an actor, an actress and a director you would pair in a movie and what genre would it be?

Sam Riley + Naomie Harris in a romantic noir by Michael Mann.

3. Last song you listened to.

Great song by a Welsh band, and the video stars my current fave Welshman Aneurin Barnard!

4. Book to movie adaptation you would like to see happening in the near future?

DaughterOfTime RA_Aneurin_DaughterOfTime

I just finished this a couple of months ago. I’d LOVE to see The Daughter of Time adapted as a feature (or TV miniseries). The idea of Richard Armitage as the bed-ridden (ehm) inspector Grant sounds delish… and I soooo want Aneurin Barnard reprising his The White Queen role as Richard III in the flashback scenes.

5. From all the Chris’, which one do you prefer: Evans, Pine, Hemsworth or Pratt?

Though they’re all nice to look at, I don’t fancy any of them in terms of looks. But Chris Pratt has the best personality so I definitely pick him. rs_500x281-150520124914-DMWTWRj

6. Name your 3 movie pet peeves.

  • Rude people who uses their phone during a movie in a theater
  • Predictable, cheesy plot you can spot a mile away
  • Amazing actors being underutilized in movies [or not getting enough work!]

7. If you had to choose, what season would you live in forever?

Autumn. Especially in Minnesota with the gorgeous Fall colors!

8. Imagine your pet (or an imaginary pet) had an inner voice, which actors/actress’ voice would he/she have?

Sam Riley’s… in his native Yorkshire accent.

9. You had a really bad day, what book or movie will make you feel better?

Sense & Sensibility. Both the 1995 Ang Lee version and the 2008 BBC version.

10. If they were handing out superpowers based on your personality, what superpower would you want and what would you probably end up with?

Oh boy, that’d be a tough one! Well I have an obsessive streak in me & I’m an aspiring screenwriter, so I’d love to have a superpower where I have all the talent, clout & money in the world to make the films I want with the actors/filmmakers I want. What I’d end up with? Utter, massive disappointment that I’ll never get to do any of that 😦

11. Sleep, Marry, Kill:

This is a tough one as I actually don’t fancy ANY of these people (except perhaps Hardy circa Inception), nor do I have strong negative feelings for.

Round 1: Joel Kinnaman, Ryan Reynolds, Dave Franco

Sleep: Reynolds | Marry: Kinnaman | Kill: Franco

Round 2: Jared Leto, Chris Evans, Orlando Bloom

Sleep: Leto | Marry: Evans | Kill: Bloom

Round 3: Paul Rudd, Tom Hardy, Michael Fassbender

Sleep: Fassbender | Marry: Hardy | Kill: none (I mean who could possibly kill Paul Rudd??)

Round 4: Choose between three guys you picked to marry from previous rounds

Marry: Chris Evans (he seems like the most *normal* one I can imagine living with)

Questions from Margaret:

1. Who would play you in a movie based on your life?

Hmmm, I’ve been asked this once before. There’s no Asian actress currently who looks even remotely like me, but hey, you always want someone 100 times prettier, smarter and wittier to play you in a movie right? In that case I picked Rashida Jones… [she’s also got a similar skin tone, height and age as me] 😀

2. What is your favorite movie ending of all time?

The Dark Knight – Gordon’s speech narrating the scene + the music = absolutely perfect.

3. Who is your favorite cinematic Batman?

Wow, I hadn’t seen this question when I answered #2. So naturally… Christian Bale.

4. What is the funniest movie you’ve ever seen?

I’ll go with a recent one that’ll stand to be a comedy classic: What We Do in The Shadows

5. Your sexiest movie character ever choice?

Even 65 years later, still tough to top Brando in Streetcar Named Desire [fanself]

6. What do you like most about our movie blogosphere?

The movie discussions & fangirl/boy-ing 😀

7. What is your favorite movie blog?

Oh man, too many to mention…

8. Will Sati survive Blade Runner 2?

Ahah, that’s VERY questionable. I’ve advised her to take someone who knows CPR to the movie!

9. What is your most anticipated movie at the moment?

Not a movie, but BBC mini-series SS-GB!

10. What is the most under-seen movie you love?

Ahah, pretty much everything Sam Riley‘s been in is under-seen. But if I have to pick one, it’d be the Austrian western Das Finstere Tal (The Dark Valley) – review coming next week!

11.What movie character do you identify with?

Sense & Sensibility‘s Elinor Dashwood.

1. MichaelIt Rains, You Get Wet

My 11 questions to them:

  1. Who’s your favorite female filmmaker?
  2. Which actor/actress would you be willing to wait in line for say, 5 hours, to meet?
  3. If you could write ANY screenplay, what genre would it be? [Feel free to elaborate if you have a specific idea in mind already]
  4. Who’s your favorite male AND female film characters in the past decade?
  5. Same as above but for TV series/mini-series.
  6. What film genre you wish studios (Hollywood or otherwise) would make more of?
  7. Inspired by Dell’s recent Against the Crowd Blogathon, what critically-panned film you’d defend with a passion in the past decade?
  8. What movie you saw this year that surprised you in a big way [whether good or bad]?
  9. If you could have a single piece of clothing from any film, which one would you pick?
  10. If you could be James Corden for a day for one episode of Carpool Karaoke, which one musical artist (or actor if he/she is also a singer) would you invite?
  11. What’s your most reliable guilty pleasure movie?

Well that was fun! Hope you enjoyed learning a bit more about moi 🙂

Liebster’d once again…

Firstly, THANKS to Jay, Vinnie, Paskalis and Anna for kindly nominating me this lovely award. I’ve done this once before in 2012, but hey, it’s always fun to do these kinds of posts.

11 things about myself:

  1. I originally wanted to be a journalist, that was initially my major in college (Mass Communication with emphasis in journalism). But after taking a few classes, I decided that I’m more suited to graphic design and so I switched. In hindsight, I think that’s a good decision.
  2. Most people who followed this blog from the start might already knew this, but I originally did this blog because I was constantly emailing my friends and colleagues about my mini review of movies. Some of my co-workers said I might as well start a blog and so one day, whilst designing a blog for a client, I started a WordPress blog myself as a test and FlixChatter was born.
  3. My favorite cuisine (aside from Indonesian of course) is Thai. I’d have Thai food several times a week if I could.
  4. Europe_bandI used to LOVE 80s heavy metal bands like Guns ‘N Roses, Warrant, Skid Row, Poison, as well as the Swedish rockband Europe, which my hubby’s a huge fan of as well. To this day, I still listen to ’em from time to time.
  5. I used to create romantic *graphic novel* in Junior High, which basically were simple black/white pencil-drawn stories with talk bubbles. I think I might’ve made a half dozen of them that would amongst my class mates. It was mostly out of boredom, and I’d often be sent to detention for my drawing hobby 😉
  6. I took French with one of my best friends in High School but we only managed to finish a couple of classes before promptly giving up. It was just too difficult for our tongues, far more difficult than English and even German, which was part of our High School curriculum. I wish I hadn’t given up so quickly, as it’d have come in handy in watching Stanley Weber’s French movies without English subtitles 😦
  7. My taste in music is pretty old fashioned. I basically listen to two genres regularly: classical and soundtrack. I’m also a big fan of Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman. Ocassionaly I listen to contemporary music, currently I’ve been obsessed with Emeli Sandé. I don’t usually like going to concerts but I’d definitely go see her if she comes to town!
  8. I’m not proud to admit this but I was a huge fan of New Kids of the Block when I was 14/15. My room was practically a NKOTB *museum* filled with paraphenaphilia and posters that covered every inch of my room wall. But by the time I saw them in concert, my interest had already waned. In fact, they sort of put my enthusiasm for boy bands for good. I never ever like boy bands ever again since then.
  9. FloppyI used to have many pets growing up, both cats and dogs. One of my favorites is a Pekingese dog named Floppy which was given from one of my late mom’s friends who was a Catholic nun. But since I moved to the US I never adopted a pet, but maybe we will in the future.
  10. Both my hubby and I are Indonesian, and we actually went to the same Jr High. But we didn’t meet until college, thousands of miles away from our home. I never thought I’d marry an Asian guy once I go to the US for school, let alone someone from my own country. But I wouldn’t want it any other way.
  11. I LOVE social media, especially blogging (natch!) and Twitter, but I can’t stand Facebook. I only have a FB account for my blog and I’m rarely on there. I’ve recently taken up Instagram (thanks partly to my French crush Stanley) and been enjoying it so far.

Jay’s Question:

What is the most fun you’ve ever had in a movie theatre? What movie were you watching?

I already answered this on Jay’s blog: One of the most fun I had at the theater was when I saw Pacific Rim on IMAX a while back, that movie was so darn entertaining and it looked great on those huge screens.

I also enjoyed watching The Dark Knight Rises and Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation on IMAX, there’s nothing more immersive than watching great action movies in those huge, enveloping screen!

Vinnie’s Questions:

  1. Do you prefer watching films in the cinema or at home?
Depends. If it’s action movies, I prefer seeing them on the big screen. But for dramas, I prefer seeing them at home.
  2. Do you have any tattoos?
No. Though I’ve always wanted one on my shoulder. Maybe one day.
  3. What is your favourite sport?
I’m not much of a sport person at all. I always get bored watching any televised sports games.
  4. Who is your man crush or woman crush?
Right now it’s all about this French Adonis Stanley Weber
  5. How good are you at keeping secrets?
Very good. But I haven’t had to keep too many secrets in my life
  6. What movie do you love that everyone else seems to hate?
Ahah, I just blogged about this last week.
  7. What do you enjoy the most about blogging?
Meeting fellow cinephiles from all over the world, sometimes I get to meet them in person, too!
  8. What is your star sign?
I don’t believe in horoscopes, but I think it’s Aquarius
  9. How many languages can you speak?
Two. Indonesian (my mother tongue) and English
  10. What is your most valuable belonging?
    Not sure I have any.
  11. Describe yourself in five words.
    Loner, imaginative, candid, emotional, emphatic.

Paskalis’ Questions:

  1. Please name a movie that can describe you or what you feel now!
Because my script deals with long lost love and second chances, so that’s what’s been on my mind lately
  2. What’s your all time favorite movie OST?
    John Williams’ Jurassic Park
  3. Choose one: Jurassic World, Terminator Genysis, or Star Wars Eps. VII?
Simply because it’s the only one I saw that I remember but I don’t think it’s a good movie.
  4. Choose one: annoying cliffhanger or super-twisted bad ending?
I’d say none, but if I must pick one, at least the latter won’t make me guess what the ending is
  5. Choose one: European movie, Asian movie, Australian movie or South American movie? Name a title!
I have a fondness for British movies, and I just recently rewatched this wonderful Scottish gem Dear Frankie that’s just been added to Netflix. Everyone should check this one out!
  6. What’s the best Indonesian movie you ever watched?
I haven’t seen any Indo movie in a long time. The last one I saw was Ada Apa Dengan Cinta which was pretty good.
  7. If your life were a movie, what other movie might look similar to it?
Unfortunately, I never saw my life reflected in any film I’ve seen
  8. If your life were still a movie, who will portray you best?
Again, this is a tough one. I don’t think I can answer this.
  9. As a movie blogger, what kind of comment you loathe?
Comments that clearly prove they don’t even read the post at all
  10. As a movie blogger, do you follow foreign blogger and interact with them? Why yes, why not?
Ahah yes, most of my blogger friends are *foreign* as a lot of them live outside of the USA. Interacting with my fellow bloggers is one of my fave parts about blogging.
  11. Now, please describe your blog in a sentence!
A blog of movie musings, commentaries, reviews, artists interviews, top ten lists and more!

Anna’s Questions:

  1. Favorite TV show(s)?
I hardly watch any TV but the last shows I saw that I REALLY enjoyed was Netflix’s Daredevil and BBC’s Broadchurch.
  2. Last movie you saw?
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World
  3. Book you’re currently reading?
None at the moment, but hoping to catch up on The Girl on the Train
  4. Comedy or drama?
    Drama generally.
  5. Classic or contemporary?
  6. SenseSensibilityDvdWhat’s that one movie you always recommend to anyone who asks?
    Sense & Sensibility (1995).
Even to those who aren’t fans of period dramas as the story is just so beautiful, and it’s superbly acted, writen and directed.
  7. You’re able to go back in time and be an extra on the set of any movie. Which one is it?
Any movie starring Stanley Weber (for obvious reasons) 😉
  8. Favorite foreign film?
In terms of replayability value: Cinema Paradiso
  9. Book version or movie version: which is better?
I know generally book version is better, though I don’t have as much patience for certain books, so in terms of Jane Austen adaptation, I enjoy the film/tv versions better.
  10. Best performance from your favorite actor/actress?
This is way too hard as I have so many faves. But I just rewatched Mrs. Brown with Dame Judi Dench and I think it’s definitely one of her many best performances.
  11. Watching movies alone or watching movies with someone?
Depends. I enjoy watching movies alone or with my hubby equally, though I prefer watching my guilty pleasures by myself 😉

Now the easy part… the nominations!

Well it seems that everyone’s been nominated already, but I’ll do it anyway and you can choose to participate or not, it’s entirely up to you.

Sorry for the super long post! Thanks for reading everyone, now you know a little bit more about yours truly 😀

Versatile Blogger Award… & 7 fun facts of yours truly

the-versitle-blogger-awardSo apparently I’m still versatile. I did this about 3 years ago I believe, and since I haven’t done a meme like this in a while, thought it might be fun to do again. Thanks Fernando for kindly bestowing this award to me… I’m verklempt! 😛

Of course, there are always rules for these kinds of things …

  1. Thank your nominator and provide a link to their blog.
  2. Make your own fifteen nominations and tell them they have been nominated
  3. Offer up seven interesting facts about yourself

Ok so naturally I’m going to nominate 15 bloggers whom I haven’t nominated the first time around. Besides, I’ve *met* a lot of new bloggers in the past few years anyway. I also try to nominate those that Fernando haven’t done already, so here goes:

  1. Andrew – A Fistful of Films
  2. Chris – Movies & Songs
  3. Chris W – This is Madness!
  4. Cindy – Cindy Bruchman Blog
  5. Eric – The Warning Sign
  6. Katy – Girl Meets Cinema
  7. Keith – Keith & Movies
  8. Mark – Markus Marakai
  9. Natalie – Writer Loves Movies
  10. Mark – Three Rows Back
  11. Mikey – Screenkicker
  12. Melissa – Snap Crackle Watch
  13. Sati – Cinematic Corner
  14. Shah – Blank Page Beatdown
  15. Terrence – The Focused Filmographer

Now on to the 7 facts about me… hmmm tough one as I’ve already shared quite a few in this 10 Movie Facts About Me meme.  Interesting or not, here they are:

  • So a lot of you perhaps already know that my dad was in the Indonesian film biz before I was born, he was a screenwriter and also directed a couple of films which sadly are not available for me to watch in any format. Well, my earliest memory of being in a film set was when I was about 2-3 years old. I distinctly remember it was my grandmother’s house where I ended up living in later on when my parents divorced. There were people and things everywhere, lot of lights and people carrying poles (either lights or boom mic poles). Not sure why I always remember this detail, but the make-up artist was a tall, slim man in drag who’s wearing tons of make-up. I think my aunt later told me he could’ve been a transgender. To this day I still have no idea what film it was though.
  • Ever since we saw In Bruges, my hubby and I wished to pay a visit. I even dedicated a post to it and finally, three years later, we’ll be going to Bruges later this month!
  • My penchant for British actors might’ve been due to all the ESL teachers I had in my teen years who’re mostly from the UK. I’ve become good friends with a lot of them, I’d even hang out with them outside of class with my girlfriends. It’s a lot of fun as they always wanted to learn Indonesian from us whilst of course we wanted to speak English! Wish I had kept in touch with ’em, especially Ben from Birmingham.
  • RisolesI’m a picky eater unlike my hubby who pretty much eat anything. Oh and I also don’t like seafood (though I don’t mind shrimp/fish crackers, and on occasion, fried calamari), alcohol of any kind and I generally am not fond of chocolates. Yes I know, those seem to be most people’s favorites 😀 But I do have a weakness for fried snacks like fried wonton, egg rolls, etc. My all time favorite snack is Risoles (Indonesian Croquette) which is simply to-die-for. My grandma made the best risoles growing up, I still haven’t been able to find one that tastes better than hers. Here’s a recipe if any of you are curious how to make it, it’s REALLY time-consuming!
  • When I was in Jr High I used to make illustrative stories, mostly b&w pencil drawings. In fact, sometimes I got caught doing it in class and got sent to detention (which was just outside of the classroom so I actually could continue drawing, ahah) I must’ve made at least 5-6 of them, and my classmates would take turn reading them. I guess it was my way of coping with a lot of problems at home as a form of escape, but also to feed my crazy imaginations, ahah. I remember my friends would get a kick out of my *racier* drawings of people kissing and stuff. I guess I’ve always been fond of writing, though I’m not as into drawing as much anymore as an adult.
  • The only time I saw a movie at midnight was a double feature with my late mother and brother Paul. It’s such a memorable moment for me as it’s the last time I went to the movies with my mother and she passed away a couple of months later. The movies we saw were Tango & Cash and Showdown in Little Tokyo. Yep, in that order. Those were the only double feature the cinema had at the time and my mom was totally game for it! Yeah, she was a VERY cool mom indeed.
  • The first concert I’ve ever gone to was Debbie Gibson in Singapore with my friends, around the time I attended a Summer Camp in California when I was 16. Gibson, Tiffany, NKOTB were hugely popular growing up. I was a huge fan of New Kids too, but now I can’t imagine ever listening to ANY boy band, in fact it just made me mortified I was ever a fan in the first place!

Well, hope you enjoyed reading some tidbits about yours truly 😀

The Sun is shining… a WordPress Family Award

It’s been a while since I participate in a blog award thing-y, but my good friend Michael from It Rains… You Get Wet kindly bestowed me this beautiful award recently. Hey, who doesn’t like awards? Plus, it gave me a chance to nominate my fellow bloggers, so why not spread the love 😀

One of the rules of this award… [with powers, comes responsibility as it were], is that I have to answer these 10 questions about myself, so here goes!

1. Favorite Actor

[who’s not a household name yet]

Richard Armitage

The question is, why is he NOT a household name yet [sigh]

He’s my pick for the next Bond, Batman, Nathan Drake, futuristic Robin Hood… and pretty much any role that’d benefit from a deeply-masculine yet soulful hunk with acting chops to boot!

2. Favorite Food?

Oh, too many to name but I’d have to say Indonesian Fried Rice, complete with chicken satay, fried egg and shrimp crackers. YUM!

3. Favorite non alcoholic drink?

Well I don’t drink so my indulgence is Starbucks’ iced chai or caramel macchiato, with whip cream on top. Yum!

4. Favorite Animal?

Oh that’s a toughie. I guess it’s a tie between cats and dogs, as I grew up with both growing up. I even had one of my kittens Jill (named after a character from an Aussie soap opera Return to Eden) that nursed on my Pekingese dog Floppy. She lost her mother and she thought Floppy was her mom!! I wish I had a photo of that.

5. Favorite number?

Hmmm, I don’t really have one but I like the number 7.

6. Favorite Color?

I’ve always been into cool colors, so blue, green, turquoise… but lately I’ve been obsessed with seafoam green!

7. My Passion?

Well isn’t it obvious? 😀 Movies of course and writing/talking about ’em. I’m also into Fashion and Travel, as you can see in my Pinterest boards.

8. Favorite Day of the Week?

I love Fridays for obvious reasons, but also because my hubby & I always go out to dinner on Friday nites, followed by home cinema movie-watching after 😀

9. Favorite Flower?

I love non-traditional flowers, so anything but roses 😀 I guess if I have to pick just one, it’d be the Mokara Orchids as they’re so exotic and simply gorgeous! My late mom used to grow Orchids when I was growing up, so the flower always reminds me of her 😀

10. Favorite soundtrack from 2013?

Pacific Rim of course. Still obsessed with this one, it’s such a good workout music, too!

  10. Whoa! This is Heavy!

I deliberately not nominating those that Michael have nominated, and yes I nominate others outside the WordPress platform as well. Sorry if I didn’t nominate you, but I can only pick 10 😀 In any case, I understand if you guys choose not to do this post for whatever reason. I hope you would though, even if you pick at least five questions and answer them on this post.

Well, HAPPY FRIDAY everyone! What are YOUR movie-watching plans?

Award Season is upon us… 7×7 + Liebster Blog Awards that is

Hello, hello! It’s mid week and right smack dab in the middle of the Olympics. Turns out that Michael Phelps isn’t the only one decorated w/ medals 😀

Thanks very much to Michael @ It Rains… You Get Wet and Raghav @ Ticker Talks Films , the co-founder of the weekly Twitter event #MTOS for tagging me with this award… and sorry it’s so long overdue! 🙂

The 7 x 7 Award highlights a blogger’s favourite pieces of work and is passed on to others so that they too can do the same as a way to promote posts and/or blogs.

As is the case with such awards, there are certain rules;

1.Tell everyone something that no one else knows about you.

Hmmm, let’s see. Well, most of you already know I’m from Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, but even some of my friends don’t know that I actually spent time in a Catholic boarding school from the age of 7 – 12. It’s a bit unusual for folks in my country and no, it’s not exactly the kind of elite boarding school like Hogwarts or Eton College, yeah I wish! It was a bittersweet experience to be sure, and though at the time I hated being there, now I’m thankful for the experience and I do believe it shaped me to be the person that I am today.

2. Link to one of the posts that I think best fits the following categories;

a. Most Beautiful Piece.

I LOVE rain scenes, and so my top ten list of Ten Indelible Rain/Wet Scenes is full of beautiful, atmospheric scenes 🙂

b. Most Helpful Piece.

Well, I hope this is helpful to some people, but I’d like to think that this Gregory Peck birthday blog-a-thon of sort is helpful for those who aren’t well-versed about the variety of films he has done [about 50+ plus total!]. Thanks to my blog friends for their submissions of posts/reviews on the acting legend.

c. Most Popular Piece.

I think my Musings on Movie Crushes post is popular because ALL of us surely have one, so it’s fun to see people sharing which actor/actress have captured their hearts. Do share yours if you haven’t already, there’s no such thing as a late comment 🙂

d. Most Controversial Piece.

It’s not exactly ‘controversial’ in the sense that it gets people up in arms, but I think my post of What Critical Darling You Can’t Sing Praises Of sort of went against the grain as a lot of people love The Hurt Locker, but I thought it was just ok, certainly wasn’t Oscar-worthy. To this day I still don’t know what the fuss is about Jeremy Renner. Now that might push a lot of people’s buttons, too 🙂

e. Most Surprisingly Successful Piece.

This is an honest list that my pal Ted and I did relatively quickly last January. Well, it turns out a lot of people agreed with us 🙂

f. Most Underrated Piece.

For this one I’m going to pick one I did a couple of years ago since not many people read my blog then, but I’m hoping to do a follow up to this as most of the then up-and-coming actors have sort of ‘made it’ in Hollywood now.

g. Most Pride-Worthy Piece.
Well, since last year I went with my first movie pitch for Castor’s Anomalous Material blog, I’m going with the last movie pitch I did. It took me quite a while to do but I’m pretty happy with it. It’s an Irish crime drama directed by Kenneth Branagh starring Gabriel Byrne, Tom Hiddleston and Richard Armitage.

3. Pass this award on to seven other bloggers.

Ok, I’m going to tag the five lovely ladies who kindly gave me the Liebster award, and not only because I’m returning the favor, I mean these are seriously kick-ass bloggers. Girl power! 😀 And to be fair, I’m tagging two other bloggers of the opposite sex, he..he..

Thanks to Lady Sati, Diana, Anna, Ruth and Iba for kindly granting me this lovely award.

The rules for this award are as follows:

  1. Each person must post 11 things about themselves.
  2. Answer the 11 questions the person giving the award has set for you.
  3. Create 11 questions for the people you will be giving the award to
  4. Choose 11 people to award and send them a link to your post.
  5. Go to their page and tell them
  6. No tag backs.

Hmmm, this is the hardest part…

11 things about myself:

  1. Though my dad was in the film biz before I was born, I had only seen bits and pieces of one of his films, which co-incidentally is about an Indonesian Superman, ahah.
  2. I took piano lessons as a kid, maybe for about 3 years or so, but unlike Ruth from Down Under, I don’t know how to play it anymore 😦
  3. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be a screenwriter. In fact, in grade school when all the other kids wanted to be a doctor, lawyer, fireman,  etc., I was convinced that was what I wanted to do. Alas… who knows if my dream would ever come true.
  4. I went to the same umbrella school that President Obama once attended when he briefly lived in Indonesia: St. Francis of Assisi. I only attended the Jr High part of the school, but it shared the same complex.
  5. I have a Javanese-dialect accent [the island where the word Java for coffee comes from] when I speak Indonesian, I might’ve gotten that from my nanny growing up. I don’t speak the language fluently though, but my mother did.
  6. My grandma was pretty strict growing up so I never could go clubbing until dawn like my friends did, yet I never had the desire to do it even as an adult. In fact, the few times I did go in college, I did not enjoy it at all.
  7. I grew up Catholic but now I attend a non-denominational Evangelical church in my neighborhood that has the most awesome Worship Band ever. I believe this Bible verse with all my heart and soul: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.John 3:16
  8. I might’ve shared this before but I don’t like chocolate, seafood or alcoholic beverage. I know those are a lot of people’s favorite things but I could do without those my entire life.
  9. I LOVE Zumba!! I’ve been taking the Latin-inspired cardio dance classes for about a year now and I’m addicted. I go three times a week, though now I’m also taking a cardio kick-boxing class just to mix things up.
  10. My love for British actors/movies might’ve stemmed from taking ESL classes from ‘native speakers’ from Britain. For some odd reasons, they only accepted Aussies and Brits in most of those schools, not Americans. I became friends with a few of them and I’ve always thought they were the coolest guys!
  11. I have a very high prescription that I’m practically blind. I guess it’s hereditary as most of my family members wear glasses.

Sati’s Questions:

1. What is your favorite movie scene?
Oh, there are sooo many! I picked twenty of them here and here, and I plan to do another post this year. Since I just did the Sense & Sensibility post though, I’d say the moment Brandon showed up in the movie all smitten for Marianne is one of my all time favorite scenes.
2. Your favorite performance?
Again, too many to list here but I’m going to go with the performance I saw in the last few months and that is Christian Bale as the Dark Knight. I think he shall remain to be my favorite Batman actor, just like Christopher Reeve will always be my favorite Superman.
3. Movie character that is most similar to you?
Hmm, this is a toughie. I really don’t know, but I tend to be kind of a dreamer and a bit of a loner, so I feel that there are some traits in Paul Dano’s character in Ruby Sparks that I identify with.
4. Favorite movie quote?
Again, since I just watched this recently, I really love this quote in Sense & Sensibility that explains why I LOVE Elinor so much:
“…It is bewitching in the idea of one’s happiness entirely depending on one person”
5. What is one movie where you would change actual director/actor/actress for someone else?
Well, I think I’d definitely cast someone other than Kristen Stewart in Snow White in the Huntsman, it’s automatically raise the level of enjoyment right of the bat. It’d be a lot better if a more capable director helmed it too.
6. What is the first film you saw?
Superman: The Movie. Which explains why I LOVE superhero movies to this day 🙂
7. Would you change any character’s fate? If so, whose and for what?
I wish Christian + Satine in Moulin Rouge and Joe Bradley + Anne in Roman Holiday lived happily ever after. But then again, the film probably wouldn’t be as compelling otherwise.
8. Your favorite track from movie soundtrack?
City of Lovers from Casino Royale.
9. What book would you like to see adapted for screen?
Amongst other books I’ve discussed here, I’d love to see Love Walked In as a romantic drama, which I think is in the works. I wholeheartedly hope they cast the right person for the protagonist though… and that Cary Grant look-alike!
10. Favorite guilty pleasure movie?
I’ve mentioned five of ’em here, but I should mention a classic guilty pleasure. That’d be Duel in the Sun. I mean Gregory Peck as a sexy scoundrel? Yes please!! 😉
11. Favorite trailer?
This turns out to be the case of good trailer, not-so-good movie, but I really enjoy the trailer for the NINE musical with Daniel Day-Lewis. The Cloud Atlas trailer that’s recently released is gorgeous as well.

Diana’s Questions:

1. What’s the song that you keep listening these days (the repeat curse)?
Well, I listen to classical radio and fortunately they don’t play the same music over and over. But not too long ago I was obsessed with Sweet Disposition by Temper Trap, apparently the lead singer is Indonesian and from the same region as my husband!

2. The last film you saw in cinema? 3 words to describe it please.
Total Recall
–Sleek, bland, empty.

3. Childhood crush?
Christopher Reeve.

4. Think of a soundtrack of a movie and tell me the best song from it, one that you still listen, years after you’ve seen the film.
Come What May from Moulin Rouge is one I can never get tired of.

5. What’s that one genre of films that you usually don’t watch?

6. If you could adapt a book into a movie or miniseries, what would it be and why?
I’ve answered this above. Since Hollywood seems hot on Biblical epics again all of a sudden, I’d love to see the story of King Solomon, Job or Ruth get a faithful adaptation, perhaps as a miniseries with a bigger budget and a great ensemble cast.

7. Tell me one actor/actress that you would be starstruck by (imagine you walk in a Starbucks and you see him/her 2 feet from you – possible reaction: eyes wide open, legs shaking, suddenly it’s hot in the room).
Well I have met such a person: Gerry Butler, and my reaction was pretty close to how you described it, ahah. Another actor I’d probably get weak in the knees for is Henry Cavill. That man is incredibly beautiful!!

8. If you could recommend a book to your readers, what would it be and why?
I haven’t read too many books unfortunately, but I really like Love Walked In, an unconventional love story.

9. How would you describe a perfect (or close to perfect) script? what are they key elements it should have?
Oh boy. I don’t know, I guess for me, I like a combination of suspense and heart-wrenching love story. I think the key element is unpredictability, which is a tricky one to pull off.

10. Favorite British actor/actress?
I think it’s obvious from the above answer, no? Let’s just say most of my favorite actors are British 😀

11. What did you have for lunch?
I love it, a non movie-related question. I had a Subway sandwich.

Ruth’s Questions:

1. What is the first film you remember watching?
Same answer as above: Superman: The Movie.

2. If you could pick one film composer to score your life, who would it be?
I’ve been loving Patrick Doyle’s work, so he’d be my first choice!

3. On that note, how much of your music library contains film scores/soundtracks?
About 90% of them!

4. Do you have a prized film poster on your wall?
No. I’ve been wanting to get the Roman Holiday poster though.

5. Film (as in 35 mm etc.) or digital?
No preference to be honest, so long as it has a good story!

6. Favourite foreign language film?
Paris Je t’aime

7. Not including ‘director’ if you could have any type of role in creating a film, what would you like to do? (Writer, Producer, DOP, Sound Designer – even a production assistant if you like!)
Casting director, hands down!

8. Desert Island Flicks – pick 5. Go!
I’ve done a post of ’em here.

9. If you could only choose to watch either dramas, or comedy films for the rest of your life (and this includes black comedies), which would you choose?
Oh boy, I hope I’d never have to choose, but I probably would go with comedies.

10. Favourite animated feature (or short, if you like)?
I LOVE a lot of Pixar movies. My latest favorite is BRAVE.

11. First film festival you ever attended (or wish you attend. I’ve only gone to my first this year).
TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) back in 2005 and I’ve been covering for the local Twin Cities Film Fest (TCFF) for the past two years. I’d LOVE to go to Sundance or Cannes one day.

Anna’s Questions:

1. Any actors you show promise for?
The first time I saw Sophia Myles was in Jane Austen’s adaptation Mansfield Park many years ago. Though she only had a small part I thought she’s very talented, plus she looks like Kate Winslet. I’ve seen her in a few things since and was impressed with her acting. I hope she’d still get her big break in Hollywood in the coming years.

2. Anyone you’re hoping makes a comeback soon?
Michael Keaton and Brendan Fraser. I know they’re working in some stuff but I’m talking about a high-profile project with a decent director. I think they both are pretty underrated actors.

Name someone in Hollywood you find overrated.
I’ve already said it here and I’m going to say it again: Brad Pitt. I don’t feel the need to explain why.

What do you do apart from blogging and watching movies?
Um, well I have a full time job so that’s at least 40 hrs I spend at the office, ahah. Oh you mean in my spare time? Workout, spend time with hubby and friends, shopping, etc.

What TV shows do you watch?
None at the moment, still hoping to catch up on BBC’s Sherlock season 2 at some point.

Your most prized DVD?
My Gregory Peck collection 🙂

Do you watch movies in theaters more or at home?
On average I probably watch more stuff at home as it gets to be expensive to go to the cinema every week.

You have the chance to go back in time to see a film premiere. Which film would you see?
I’d love to travel back in time and go to ANY movie premiere of Gregory Peck, especially The Big Country so I might also run into Charlton Heston 🙂

Dog or cat person?
Both. I used to have a cat and a dog when I was growing up and my dog actually ‘nursed’ on my orphaned kitten even though she had no milk! Yeah I know, it was bizarre!

Whose movies have you seen the most of? (This can apply to actors and directors.)
Gerry Butler and Gregory Peck‘s, I haven’t counted exactly how many but probably two dozens of them. I’ve also seen about 20 of Christian Bale‘s movies.

Name your guilty pleasure.
Already covered in Sati’s question above. Now, I’ve never mentioned this before, but I quite like cheesy action flicks like Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Eraser and Wesley Snipes’ Passenger 57 🙂

Iba’s Questions:

1. LOTR or Harry Potter?
Well I owned the Lord of the Rings box set but no plans on buying the Harry Potter set, so that tells you which one I love most.

2. What’s the longest you have waited in line for a movie?
It’d have to be Beowulf and Grendel as I waited in the rush lines for 3.5 hours in the rain at TIFF and was so worried I won’t be able to get in!! Fortunately I did get in and was able to meet Gerry Butler afterwards, so yeah it was well worth the wait!

3. Have you ever fallen asleep in a film? If so, which one?
I never fell asleep but I did dozed off a bit watching The Bishop’s Wife, the one with Cary Grant. I must’ve been very tired.

4. What was your first concert experience?
It might’ve been Tina Turner, I think I was in Jr High. It’s also the ONLY concert that I went with my extended family, including my grandma!

5. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Scotland!! I’d LOVE to spend a month exploring all the cities: Glasgow, Edinburgh, Paisley, the Highlands… see where I’m getting at? 🙂

6. Any hidden talent(s)?
Not exactly hidden but I used to create a comic-book of sort, well more like illustrated stories back in Jr. High. I might’ve made about 4-5 of them, they all have romances with suspense/thriller thrown in. It was quite popular that my classmates would take turns reading them.

7. Subtitles: Yea or Nay?
Yea. No problem with them whatsoever.

8. What book would you like to be seen made into a movie?
Already covered this above under Diana’s questions

9. What is the first thing you would do if you won the lottery?
Say a thank you prayer to the Lord Almighty.

10. Have you ever snuck into a film without paying for it?

11. What is your favorite silent film?
I haven’t watched too many of them other than Laurel & Hardy and some Chaplin stuff, so I’d say The Artist.

Now the easy part… the nominations!

Well I guess not too easy as everyone seems to have been tagged for this award, but ah well, so they just have to answer more questions like I did, ahah.
