Hello everyone! Pardon the delay, I know I’m five days late in posting my monthly recap… not that any of you would notice anyway, ha!
Well, May has been quite a hectic month for various reasons, which is why I haven’t had much time to blog. I was traveling to Chicago/Michigan in early May and I visited my bestie in San Diego for Memorial weekend. She had a great idea about visiting The Top Gun House in Oceanside, yep the house featured as Charlie (Kelly McGillis’ house in the first movie), which is now a High Pie shop. There’s a replica of the Kawasaki GPZ900R motorbike that Tom Cruise rode into the sunset in the movie. Some of you who follow me on Insta… if you or your blog have an IG account, let’s follow each other!
For the past few months, I was also busy planning a fundraising event for my passion project Hearts Want film that happened last week… I don’t really have an update to share yet, apart from the fact that our film is now fiscally sponsored by The Gotham Film & Media Institute, woot!!
Naturally, all the traveling and fundraising planning took plenty of time away from movie-watching, plus my hubby and I were bingeing on Season 3-4 of Downton Abbey + finally finished up Tokyo Vice. Sadly I only managed to watch a paltry four movies, yikes! One of them I watched on the plane, ahah. I also rewatched Cyrano on my flight to San Diego 🙂
NEW MOVIES
Operation Mincemeat (Netflix)
Review upcoming
Best Sellers*
I love movies about books and the pairing of Michael Caine and Aubrey Plaza intrigues me. So I watched this on my flight from San Diego over Memorial weekend. I quite enjoyed it, it ends up being intriguing and heartfelt despite some of the predictable unlikely-friendship tropes. The literary world is quite a fascinating topic and it was pretty fleshed out here. Aubrey is actually great in a dramatic performance (a bit less quirky than in her other movies).
TV SERIES
Downton Abbey (S3-4) – Amazon Prime
Tokyo Vice (S1) – HBO MAX
This was really good and the series ended on such a massive cliffhanger, so I REALLY hope there’ll be a 2nd season and more!
Obi-Wan Kenobi (S1) – Disney+
I had posted the trailer back on Star Wars Day, so clearly I had been excited for this. Because of my traveling, I finally just got a chance to watch the three episodes this weekend. I’ll do a proper post of it once I saw the rest of the series.
SCREENINGS COMING UP IN JUNE
Jurassic World Dominion
Lightyear
Good Luck To You, Leo Grande (screener)
Hollywood blockbuster season is in full swing, so I anticipate seeing a lot more movies this Summer!
52 Films By Women pledge
Movies indicated with * (asterisk) indicate those directed by women.
Well, I almost went an entire month without seeing a single movie directed by women, yikes!! Fortunately, I did get to see at least one, and given I only saw four movies total, 1 out of 4 isn’t too bad, LOL! Let’s hope I can catch up this Summer!!
MAY MOVIE OF THE MONTH
TOP GUN: MAVERICK
There’s not much competition last month but even if I had seen more movies, TOP GUN: MAVERICK would likely take the reign. Crazy that even after just two weeks, this Top Gun sequel has already become Tom Cruise’s highest-grossing domestic release of his illustrious career. My gut says it’ll stay in the top 10 with the release of Jurassic World Dominion next Friday.
Everyone went to see Top Gun: Maverick this weekend yet I went to see Crimes of the Future (awesome film, review coming tomorrow).
I don’t think I have the stomach for Crimes of The Future based on what I’ve read. You must be one of the few who saw it I also read it was a major flop.
Well, it’s not really a commercial film as it’s more of an art film. It does involve lots of internal organs and other fucked-up shit. That’s the Cronenberg I know and love.
I am so squeamish generally so body horror would likely make me pass out!! Even just seeing some stills of the movie makes me queasy, ahah. That’s good that Cronenberg delivers to his fans though, the cast is great!
I didn’t know there’s an actual Top Gun house in San Diego! Might have to go check it out when I’m back in that city.
The only new movie I saw in May was Top Gun: Maverick. Just catching on shows, Stranger Things, Better call Saul, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Kenobi.
Hey Ted! Yeah it’s on Oceanside beach, a beautiful scenic area so well worth a visit! The Top Gun House itself is so small but packed that day as it the opening weekend of Maverick. Well I just posted about Kenobi series, curious to hear your thoughts!
Nice good luck and please follow me up my blog please
