A trio of brand new trailers: FREE FIRE, LIVE BY NIGHT and THE PROMISE

movietrailers

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaassss!!!

Sorry ehm, now that I got my giddy enthusiasm out of the way… [well just enough so I can actually do a post, ahah]

Well if you’ve visited my blog long enough you’ll know how much I’ve been crushing madly on Sam Riley… and he deserves every bit of my love… and then some. Anyway, today we’ve got three trailers, two of which has two Batmans AND a Scarecrow too 😀

FREE FIRE

Set in Boston in 1978, a meeting in a deserted warehouse between two gangs turns into a shootout and a game of survival.

I’ve been waiting for this trailer since the day I heard Sam was cast in it… so that was about a year ago! I mentioned it here, can’t believe it’s been four months since we got its first official photo!

Well, today we didn’t just get ONE but TWO Free Fire trailers… the top one is the official UK trailer and below is the RED BAND trailer… more blood

Some lucky folks got to see this at TIFF Midnight Madness last night w/ the cast and crew… yes including my Sam!!

Well, early reviews have been mostly positive!

The main reason I’ve super excited for FREE FIRE is because Sam Riley‘s in it… but of course the cast is amazing! Besides Sam we’ve got Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy, Armie Hammer, Sharlto Copley, Michael Smiley, Jack Reynor, and Noah Taylor.

I know Sam isn’t in the movie much, heck he’s not even mentioned in the trailer (what a travesty), but he’s been mentioned quite a bit in the early reactions of the movie on Twitter!! I have a feeling he isn’t gonna survive in this movie, and neither is many of the cast, but from the reviews sounds like director Ben Wheatley isn’t killing people off so soon. It’s a game of survival so I guess it wouldn’t be fun if everyone dies in the first act, ahah.

People are saying it’s as violent as the promos made it out to be, but also a lot of fun. Nothing like a good sense of humor to break all the tension of a group of trigger-happy gangsters stuck in a warehouse full of guns! There’ll be gunfire alright!

I’ve actually met Jack Reynor once… now if only I could meet Sam one day!!! [I believe I will!] 😉

I hope we get this one on the big screen, no US release date yet but the lucky UK folks will get this in March 2017.

Live By Night

livebynight

A story set in the Prohibition Era and centered around a group of individuals and their dealings in the world of organized crime.

Now this one I’m actually surprised to see a trailer so soon! But hey, I love pretty much everything Ben Affleck‘s directed, especially Gone Baby Gone, so I’m excited on that front. Now that he’s Batfleck, I do keep thinking that his gangster character Joe Coughlin looks as if Bruce Wayne’s dark past prior to him finding a conscience and becoming Batman to save his city from gangsters, ahah. It looks intriguing, though I’m not crazy about Scott Eastwood’s casting. I mean everyone else is great… Brendan Gleeson, Chris Cooper, Zoe Saldana, Elle Fanning, etc. I only wish his screen time is small [I didn’t see him in the trailer but that could be my selective perception, ahah]

The Promise

thepromise

Set during the last days of the Ottoman Empire, The Promise follows a love triangle between Michael, a brilliant medical student, the beautiful and sophisticated Ana, and Chris – a renowned American journalist based in Paris.

Seriously there’s barely ANY buzz on this movie! Aside from that super boring generic title, it’s got Christian Bale AND Oscar Isaac?? Bale is sporting a similar beard as in The Dark Knight Rises for some reason, and Isaac is doing a Turkish accent? Y’know what, I don’t know what to make of this trailer… it’s a love triangle set in the Ottoman Empire… sounds really juicy but somehow the trailer is just… okay. What was the promise in the title? I must’ve missed it in the trailer. Y’know generally I’m always wary of love triangles, it’s prone to clichès and schmaltziness, which is what I detect here too despite those two great actors. Montréal-based actress Charlotte Le Bon plays the woman in the center of the triangle, I’ve just seen her in Anthropoid. I’m not as impressed w/ her there as I was in The Hundred-Foot Journey. Well, I might go to the press screening if there’s one, otherwise more like a rental.

What are your thoughts on any one of these new trailers?

  1. Free Fire looks like a bloody good time, reminded me more of Tarantino’s films than Peckinpah’s. But then again Tarantino’s also copied Peckinpah’s styles so all these directors likes to imitate one another. Lol. Hopefully it gets a release here soon.

Live By Night looks good but the January release date worries me. When studios releases a film by respected directors in the dead of winter months, it’s not a good sign. Black Hat and Hail Caesar! are some good recent examples. Hopefully I’m wrong and the film will be good!

Never heard of this one until I saw the trailer today, didn’t know know Bale was working on any film. I’ll wait and see what the critics say before deciding to see it or not.

    1. Hi Ted! Ben Wheatley’s said many times he loves Sam Peckinpah’s movies so I’m sure this is right up your alley. It looks violent for sure but hopefully not gory. What I love about it is it looks hilarious!! Glad to see lots of people who have seen it mention Sam, that means he’s given an interesting, funny role that’s memorable even if he’s not the lead. I think he’s an unhinged junkie which will be fun to watch, I think he can play ANYTHING!

Yeah I forgot about the January release, hmmm that’s not a good sign. I think Gangster Squad was also released around that month. But let’s hope Affleck can break the curse of the dead-months release.

I mentioned The Promise in one of my FFTF posts but yeah, there’s barely ANY buzz surrounding it, I almost forgot about it when the trailer is out, ahah.

  2. Free Fire allll the way!! I loved High-Rise and can’t wait to get into more of Wheatly’s stuff, and this just looks and sounds terrific. Can’t wait, hopefully Sam gets a decent role. He sure was great as a lead in The Dark Valley

    1. Right on Jordan!! I think Free Fire is more straight forward than High-Rise, it’s such a simple story but people are saying the execution (pardon the pun!) is a lot of fun! I sure hope Sam will work more regularly again soon. I think he’s deliberately taking a bit time off as he has a 2-yr-old son, and he also lives in Berlin so not exactly in the *mecca* of filmmaking. But yes clearly he can LEAD a movie even from his first film Control!

      1. Yeah, Control is amazing. I haven’t actually watched it since I got diagnosed I think… I probably should. Sam is so good. Would love to see him more often.

High-Rise has made me a big fan of Wheatly, I need to catch up on his older stuff but Free Fire is sounding good! 😀

  3. Free Fire sold me on that cast and “B Movie Mayhem” I just heard about The Promise yesterday too, you’re right, no one is talking about it despite having two very good actors as leads. (And the woman from The Walk, who I enjoyed) Live by Night, maybe I’d watch on DVD.

    1. Hi Brittani! Yes they’re calling it ‘beautiful mayhem’ 🙂 I love that the trailer looks hilarious and the early buzz are saying it’s funny, so I’m even more excited for that. It’s nuts to think the studio isn’t promoting The Promise heavily given the two male cast, esp. Isaac following his role in Force Awakens!

  4. Yessss!! for Free Fire and Live By Night.
I have become a huge fan of Wheatley ever since I saw High-Rise and how can you not be excited to see a film Ben Affleck is directing? especially considering the fact that he has knocked it out of the park all three times thus far.

    1. Glad to hear you’re excited for FREE FIRE too Khalid!! I have yet to see High-Rise but I sure hope I like it as much as you. And yes on Ben directing, he’s now one of my fave filmmakers!

    Hi, Ruth:

‘Free Fire’ looks like a low rent, low budget, high impact tale where Quentin Tarantino’s imagination takes on the Clive Owen film, ‘Shoot ’em Up!’.

Great looking cast who look like they’re having a ball making the film better for their inclusion!

    1. Amen to everything you said Kevin! Free Fire sounds like an entertaining shoot-em-up that actually seems less preposterous than ‘Shoot ’em up’ ahah.

P.S. Would you be willing to do another contribution for FC again? Perhaps something Scorsese related? 😉

Working on something Classic, Spotlight and Character Actor oriented right now, Ruth.
Need to get back in the saddle after such a long absence. Should be off to you this weekend. Or immediately thereafter,

        Something Scorsese related sounds intriguing!

        1. Woo hoo! I’ll take any character spotlight stuff, I always enjoy reading those! But yeah, maybe your next one could be Scorsese-related, as I think he has a new film coming out called Silence. Thanks Kevin!

    1. Yeah, Affleck is a good director so I’m naturally curious to see his next project. Have you seen his previous films Vin? I think Gone Baby Gone is excellent!

        1. Oooh you should check it out. I think it’s his best work, better than ARGO imho, very emotional and a great cast including Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris.

            1. Alrighty then! I’m glad Affleck is adapting another one of Dennis Lehane’s novel, Gone Baby Gone was written by him, as is Live By Night. I think crime drama is his forte.
