Woo wee!!! Thank you WARNER BROS + Denis Villeneuve for brightening up this sleepy hump day with this glorious new trailer. I had already been anticipating it since the brief teaser yesterday promised us a longer trailer and it came exactly on time as promised at 9 AM PT/11 AM CST.
Behold…
OH MY! November 3 can’t come soon enough – and that is saying something since we just came out of a looooong winter 😀
If you’ve read my 1000+ word review of DUNE PART I, then you know I absolutely LOVED Villeneuve’s version of Frank Herbert’s celebrated novel. The first movie got me invested in the world of DUNE, and the ending certainly makes me hope we get to see the conclusion in part II. I’m glad he decided to split it into two parts given how dense the book is. The saga continues with further exploration of Paul Atreides’s (Timothée Chalamet) mythic journey as he unites with Chani (Zendaya) and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family.
Villeneuve’s co-written the script with Jon Spaihts and has promised a more action-packed, battle-filled conclusion. I know that the scene of Paul’s rights-of-passage where he’ll be riding the sandworm is going to look spectacular on the big screen, but I love that the trailer starts with a quiet scene of Paul and Chani sitting on the vast sand dune as if they were on a date. Paul talks to her about… swimming! Of course, that’s certainly a ludicrous idea for a Fremen who has been living in the desert without any source of water. Given that they’ve adapted physiologically to the environment as their blood is able to clot almost instantly in order to prevent water loss, not sure if they could actually survive water swimming!
Most of the ensemble cast will be back, in addition to Chalamet & Zendaya, I’m seeing Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica Atreides, Javier Bardem as the Fremen leader Stilgar, and Josh Brolin as Gurney, who we last see running away from the House of Atreides’ fiery compound after it was attacked by House of Harkonnen led by Stellan Skarsgård‘s Baron Harkonnen. From the look of Gurney’s fierce expression, we can expect he’d avenge his friends in the most brutal way possible.
Who are Part 2’s cast members and who are they playing?
They’ve been releasing official photos of new cast members recently and I’m really excited for all of them!! Here’s the breakdown
Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, the daughter of Emperor Shaddam IV + Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, heir to the House of Harkonnen
We have some tidbits about these new characters per Vanity Fair: Princess Irulan, the daughter of Emperor Shaddam IV is the supreme ruler of the galaxy, whose grip on the warring factions has slipped. Per Villeneuve, “[Princess’ Irulan’s] stake could not be higher because she’s afraid that her father could lose the throne, could lose everything,”
Feyd-Rautha is said to be a major factor that cause the empire’s collapse. I’m excited to see what Butler would bring to the table, playing a character completely different from his breakout role of Elvis… though he’s channeling another rock icon for the role according to the director, “Austin Butler brought to the screen something that would be a cross between a psychotic, sociopath serial killer and Mick Jagger.’ Woot!
Christopher Walken as Emperor Shaddam IV + Lea Seydoux as Lady Margot, a key ally to Paul Atreides in his war with the House of Harkonnen.
As for Lady Margot Fenring, per the VF article, is ‘…a Bene Gesserit sister, but will be a secret agent in the movie,’ Ha! Interesting given Seydoux just played James Bond’s girlfriend in the last two Bond movies.
LONG LIVE THE FIGHTERS!
Villeneuve is again collaborating with the creatives from Part I: Oscar-winning director of photography Greig Fraser; Oscar-winning production designer Patrice Vermette; Oscar-winning editor Joe Walker; Oscar-winning visual effects supervisor Paul Lambert; Oscar-nominated costume designer Jacqueline West. Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer is again on hand to create the score.
Dune: Part Two was filmed on location in Budapest, Abu Dhabi, Jordan, and Italy. I can hardly wait!!
What do you think of DUNE: PART II full trailer?
…
This does look great as I’m going to pay extra to see it on IMAX. Funny you mention Mick Jagger as he was supposed to play Feyd-Rautha in the film version that Alejandro Jodorowsky was going to make. The casting in Jodorowsky’s version was INSANE! Salvador Dali as Emperor Shaddam IV, Jodorowsky’s son Brontis was going to play Paul since he had been in his father’s film El Topo and Orson Welles as Baron Harkkonen who was going to do the film not for money but for food because Jodorowsky was going to pay this chef from Welles’ favorite restaurant to cook for Welles exclusively. Also supposed to be in the film were Amanda Lear, David Carradine, and Charlotte Rampling. The music was going to be created by Magma and Pink Floyd.
Yeah I’ll definitely see this in IMAX or Dolby Theater, I mean it deserves to be seen on as big a screen as possible with the best sound.
Whoa!!! I didn’t know that Jagger was supposed to play Feyd-Rautha so maybe that’s why Villeneuve and Butler still wanna honor his spirit in the role somehow? Salvador Dali as Emperor Shaddam IV and Orson Welles as Baron Harkkonen??! That would be amazing to see, Not sure about Brontis Jodorowsky though.
I wish this was a summer release, November is way too long of a wait. But I definitely want to enjoy some warm weather first before thinking about November, lol! I wish the real IMAX theater at the zoo is still operating since it looks like Fraser has framed the entire film for IMAX’s screen. Seeing all these spectacles on that giant screen would’ve amazing.
Interesting, this version will have a climatic knife fight between Paul and Feyd-Rautha just like Lynch’s version. Hopefully, the fight scene will be pretty intense since I thought that original version was pretty good for an early 80s fight scene.
I wish it came out this Summer too, Ted! But at the same time, I’d rather spend more time outside in the warmer months here, except for a few movies of course, I think the Dolby Theater in Southdale is perhaps the best one here so I might go see this there.
I have faith in Villeneuve to deliver a bunch of kick-ass fight scenes, including the climactic knife fight. Fun to see two talented young talents about the same age playing Paul and Feyd-Rautha.
I actually like the Dolby Cinema in Rosedale better but it’s too far of a drive for me. So, yeah the Southdale Dolby Cinema is the one I prefer seeing films in these days. And it’s cheaper than the fake IMAX theater that’s right next to it. Lol!
I saw the first Dune at Southdale Dolby Cinema then saw it the second time at the Icon theater in St. Louis Park. Just wanted to see check out their new laser projector and it looked great.
