I love limited series! I like that format better as it takes far less commitment than open-ended series that tend to get dragged on too long. But yet it allows for more character development than a 2-hour movie. AppleTV has been on a roll lately on the TV front. I know I still haven’t caught up on Severance yet even though I posted the trailer a while back, but I have been watching Slow Horses and it’s really good! Well, you know I like British TV and things set in Britain so naturally I’m intrigued by The Essex Serpent.
The series follows London widow Cora Seaborne who moves to Essex to investigate reports of a mythical serpent. She forms a bond of science and skepticism with the town’s pastor, Will Ransome, but when tragedy strikes, locals accuse her of attracting the creature.
I’m already sold on Tom Hiddleston but I’m intrigued by Claire Danes‘ casting as well who apparently replaced Keira Knightley. Haven’t seen her in anything in ages and her British accent is spot on here. I love a good fantastical mystery with spirituality and romance thrown in. Looks like there’ll be plenty of those as a mythical creature sets to disrupt a quiet English village and the lives of the townsfolk. I do love the fantasy bit, but in the end, it’s the people’s relationships that make a series worth watching. The trailer promises an opposites-attract forbidden affair between Will and Cora, I’m down for that!
Based on Sarah Perry’s novel of the same name, it also stars Clémence Poésy, Frank Dillane, and Hayley Squires. Love the female forces behind the camera, the director is BAFTA nominee Clio Barnard and the script is by Anna Symon, both of whom have worked on award-winning shows. The series is set in 1893, so that’ll continue my streak of watching period drama series. I’ve been bingeing on Bridgerton, The Gilded Age which then led to me rewatching Downton Abbey from the beginning with my hubby.
The series premiere on AppleTV is Friday, May 13.
What do you think of The Essex Serpent?
…
I saw the trailer for this show earlier today. Looks interesting. I might watch it.
Let’s hope it’s a good one!
I’ve never heard about this show before, the trailer looks interesting and it’s beautifully shot. I’ll put it on my to watch list.
I remember you said you mostly watch series, Ted, well now I’m in the same boat LOL. There are too many good shows too little time, I’m about to start watching Tokyo Vice on AppleTV+ too.
