Well, since I’ve posted my Top 10 of the year so far and Summer Blockbuster Months are quickly coming to a close. I’ve already got my eyes set on what’s in store for the rest of 2014! Now, there are going to be movies I’ll be seeing next month that aren’t on this list because well, I’m not really hugely anticipating them. In fact, there is no movie that screams MUST SEE in all of August, though most likely I would be seeing Guardians of the Galaxy, Into the Storm, Expendables 3 and Sin City 3, so I’m just going to start the list with September all the way to the end of the year.
A Walk Among the Tombstones (Sept 19)
Private investigator Matthew Scudder (Liam Neeson) is hired by a drug kingpin (Dan Stevens) to find out who kidnapped and murdered his wife. Blurring the lines between right and wrong, Scudder races to track the deviants through the backstreets of New York City before they kill again.

Ok so normally this isn’t my cup of tea but I quite like this cast. Neeson is always reliable in bad ass action movies, but it’s most interesting to see Downton Abbey alum Dan Stevens (who’s also in BBC’s Sense & Sensibility) and miss Jane Eyre herself Ruth Wilson. Seems that Stevens wants to break into Hollywood but I didn’t expect to see him in two R-rated thrillers in the same year, he’s also in The Guest that’s supposed to be out in the Fall as well.

The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby (Sept 26 – Limited)
Once happily married, Conor and Eleanor suddenly find themselves as strangers longing to understand each other in the wake of tragedy. The film explores the couple’s story as they try to reclaim the life and love they once knew and pick up the pieces of a past that may be too far gone.

I had never heard of this before last night, but Viggo and Oscar in the same movie? Yes please! The trailer looks pretty gripping, though this is a feature film debut from a screenwriter with a rather spotty track record, so we shall see I guess. Should be worth a rental with this cast, at the very least.

Interestingly enough, last year I had another movie with Noomi Rapace (Dead Man Down) on my most-anticipated list but I still haven’t seen that movie. Apparently this is Mr. Gandolfini’s last screen appearance, which would make this rather bittersweet. I do like Hardy but the trailer is pretty meh, but who knows, it could still be a good one.

Gone Girl (Oct 3)
With his wife’s disappearance having become the focus of an intense media circus, a man sees the spotlight turned on him when it’s suspected that he may not be innocent.

Starring: Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Missi Pyle, Neil Patrick Harris
It’s been four years since I saw anything by Fincher (The Social Network). He did The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo which isn’t my cup of tea, but this who-dun-it type of thriller intrigues me. I read that Gillian Flynn, the author the novel is based on, is interested in ‘exploring the psychology and dynamics of a long-term relationship.’ To me, the slow-burn, character-driven approach is certainly far more intriguing than just a fast-paced action thriller. I always think that Affleck is a better actor than director but hopefully he does all right here. I do like Rosamund, glad she’s getting more prominent roles in Hollywood.

Nice to see Keaton in a leading role again, and given that he did play an iconic superhero before certainly feels like it’s art imitating life. Billed as a comedy, a dark comedy no doubt, this looks as bizarre as ever! I’ve only seen Babel and 21 Grams from Iñárritu which were both dark and grim, so I’m curious to see him direct a comedy. Oh, and I also love miss Riseborough, though I’ve been hoping the talented Brit would score a leading role soon.

It’s been a while since I saw RDJ on screen without his Iron Man suit, but this premise doesn’t immediately appeal to me. I’ll see what the buzz says if this one is worth seeing on the big screen.

When I first saw the poster a few weeks ago at a local cinema, it definitely piqued my interest! There’s not a single name on it, but I knew Vaughn had directed X-Men: First Class. Well, now that the trailer is out, I actually don’t know what to make of it, and not in a good way. Sure the cast is awesome but I just don’t have a good feeling this would actually be an awesome movie. Still, color me intrigued, let’s hope the movie would be as good as the poster!
Interstellar (Nov 7)

Ok so every single time I saw this trailer I kind of teared up a little. Mankind was born on Earth. It was never meant to die here, the tagline says. Just what the heck does it even mean? It’s as cryptic as ever, as most Nolan’s films that’s based on his own concepts are, but I know I can’t wait to see it! The cast is terrific, though most of them are Nolan regulars, esp. Michael Caine. I’ve been intrigued by McConaughey’s casting here, but I expect that he, as well as the film, will deliver!

The promos for this one has been doing a phenomenal job in getting me pumped for this movie. The second movie ended in such a cliffhanger that got me all riled up. I still wish they hadn’t split the finale, but this cash-grab trend seems to be here to stay [sigh]. In any case, it’d be sad to see Philip Seymour Hoffman here, he’s SO good as Plutarch, he’s the one I most look forward to seeing on this final installments!

Mr. Turing certainly has an incredible story worth-telling, and with Cumberbatch playing him, it naturally piques my interest. I LOVE espionage movies, even more intriguing that it’s based on a true story. The all-British cast looks great, nice to see Matthew Goode here as well. That guy is so underrated it’s criminal! I sure hope this would fare much better than Cumberbatch’s previous biopic [on Julian Assange] The Fifth Estate, but if it’s anything like the emotional & gripping trailer, I can’t imagine it’d be worse.

I know some people call this whole trilogy thing a cash grab and all but I’m not one of them. I LOVE this universe and Peter Jackson’s so committed to this whole franchise and he has a palpable love for this story. I can’t wait to see the final journey for all the characters, especially Thorin & his band of dwarves in their quest to reclaim their lost kingdom. Wish they’d release a trailer already, but hopefully that’ll happen soon!

The story of Mr. Zamperini is an extraordinary one to be sure. Not only what he has endured, to hell and back, but what he did after he survived the whole ordeal. The devoutly-Christian man actually sought out those who’ve tortured him during the war and forgave them. What a perfect story to experience on Christmas Day!

I’m all for Biblical stories… well, so long as it actually respects the source material. The Moses I know from the Bible I love the actors but they all seem miscast to me and this trailer did nothing to alleviate my dread about this project. Totally agree with Drew on this: “Moses is apparently the next Maximus, which has me worried that Scott wants so badly to recreate Gladiator that he’s literally going to botch the whole thing. Moses was not a warrior. This is not scripture.” I still have a sliver of hope that Ridley Scott would somehow prove me wrong about this movie, but I’m not holding my breath.

Hi Nov, isn’t Cillian in Interstellar too? It looks really, really good and I generally like most of Nolan’s work. Benny looks so good in Imitation Games too. I don’t know who Miyavi is, so he plays one of the Japanese soldier then? I LOVE the story of Lou Zamperini in UNBROKEN so that’s the main draw for me instead of the actor/director. Ahah, my hubby’s seeing Ninja Turtles next week but I have zero interest in seeing that. Oooh so your turtle is gonna write the review? Awesome! 😉
Not that I am aware of, even if by surprise he shows up most likely as cameo. He is in heart of the sea and Aloft. Me too…Nolan is a genius, I am looking forward to see something like Memento again…something unpredictable.
I think he will play the Japanese soldier. I read somewhere that Jolie likes him a lot. I have seen him a metre away from me, bloody handsome!

Yeah, it’s sad to see a couple of movies here that have the last appearance of actors who’ve died the past year, Seymour Hoffman’s in Hunger Games 3 is another.

I dunno, I think I’d consider Guardians of the Galaxy pretty much a must see, personally. It’s certainly one of my more anticipated for the rest of the year, though you definitely pointed out quite a few other notables. Hi Chris! Unfortunately, Guardians of the Galaxy still hasn’t got me excited yet. I’ll be seeing it next week and maybe I end up loving it but I’m not exactly excited for it.
The ones I’m interested in are: Birdman, Gone Girl, Inherent Vice (new P.T. Anderson film), The Imitation Game, Interstellar, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Pt. 1, and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby. I’m sort of interested in Unbroken and Big Hero 7 but I have no interest in Exodus as I think Ridley Scott needs to retire.
Oh I haven’t heard of Inherent Vice but that’s because I’m generally not following PT Anderson’s work. Ahah, I agree Mr Scott needs to retire and maybe just produce things & let other edgier directors take the helm.
I say skip Dead Man Down, it’s kind of dreadful thriller that you predict the outcome miles away. It’s just not a good movie.
#1 for me is Interstellar, Nolan + IMAX = Awesome! Battle of the Five Armies should be great but I’m hoping Jackson wouldn’t indulge way too much on the material. Then again in the book, Tokien didn’t write much about the battles so I can’t wait to see the big action sequences and in Dolby Atmos!
As you know I’m a big Fincher fan but Gone Girl sounds like a TV movie of the week but in Fincher’s hands, the movie will be quite cinematic. So I’ll see it never the less.

Surprisingly I am NOT a fan of The Hobbit movies, really unimpressed so far. 😦 And everyone thought that I would love it no matter what. I haven’t even been able to bring myself to see the second one, even though it has Cumberbatch in it.
As for Gone Girl, I am looking forward to that. I think Ben Affleck is going to be a perfect Nick, and I actually liked the book.

I hear ya about The Hobbit, I definitely think they’re not as good as LOTR which are epic masterpieces! I still do enjoy it but I won’t buy the Blu-ray set, as I probably won’t keep watching ’em.

They did, and they should burn for it. I mean Mockingjay is the same size as the rest of the books, and they were perfectly covered in their movies. I can see a LOT of filler stuff being packed in there!
It’s like when they are all done I would love to buy the combined box set to match my LotR, but at the same time… meh. 😦 And the cast is great, it looks stunning and all, but it just really doesn’t work for me.
I think they’ve all been really well cast actually. I am not a huge fan of her work (her first book that I read was terrible), but when I heard Fincher was making this one I read it and it is actually quite a good read, and the trailers look like they are sticking true to it. Plus Flynn has been quite involved from what I understand, which I have found to be immensely helpful in terms of realising books to screen.
The three I’m most looking forward to are Inherent Vice, Foxcatcher, and Gone Girl. The year has already had some great films (Boyhood, Life Itself, Budapest), so I’m hoping the next five of months will continue to deliver.
Yeah I think this has been a pretty good year too! I think my top 10 list will be pretty easy to do 🙂
I feel that the crop of films coming out at the end of this year is generally weaker than the previous 2-3 years. Interstellar is genuinely the only one of this group that I can’t wait to see, but I will give most in this list a try, especially Birdman, because I’m interested to see Michael Keaton back in a lead role under the guidance of a capable director. Also, I’m looking forward to watching “Frank” with Michael Fassbender, though I know you didn’t include August. It looks so odd that I can’t wait to see what it’s like. Then there’s “The Boxtrolls” which looks simply adorable, and “Inherent Vice” simply because it’s Paul Thomas Anderson at the helm with Joaquin Phoenix in the starring role.
PS. you’re right about Exodus. There seems to be a bit of miscasting for this film. However, it is a pretty solid cast and I can’t see all of these actors choosing roles that they know they are not fit for.

Hi Niels! I honestly don’t know if this year or any year is better than the previous one. I go year by year and so far there are films I love that will become my favorite for years to come, so I’d say 2014 is a pretty good year in film. For some reason Boxtrolls doesn’t appeal to me at all, maybe I’ll rent it but I’m not sure.
Yeah, Exodus just seems like a bad idea in terms of this execution, it’s just another action adventure that somewhat relates to the Bible, but not really.

WOW, lucky Indira indeed! So she’s been Stephen’s co-star in a couple of things then? She is gorgeous tho.
She shared a screen with him in Hunted but in GoT he keeps moving between his depressing castle and slightly less depressing snowy North when she spent most of the season in brothels so they didn’t cross paths 🙂 British shows are basically a mine of GoT actors occasionally you get to see 4-5 in one.
Ah I see. Yeah GoT has such a huuuuge cast that some of them probably never meet each other. But man, if I only I could work for a day on the set, they don’t even need to pay me!! So many great Brits are on US TVs these days, and I’m not complaining! 😀

Two Faces of January has already been out in the UK. I never ended up seeing it because it was barely on circuit. I think it was a bit of a flop.
Oh really? That’s too bad, I mean the two male cast are amazing. Ah well, I probably just rent that one as I doubt it’ll make it to my city.
I’m all about Interstellar in the second half but there are a few of others that interest me. Young Ones, Fury, Unforgiven, and of course The Hobbit.
Hmmm, for some reason I don’t know about Young Ones and Unforgiven [quick typing into google]… ooh both sounds intriguing, esp Unforgiven. A reinterpretation of Eastwood’s Unforgiven as a Japanese period film, so I definitely need to check out that one first then 🙂
When I read your post, I was using my mobile…now I have seen the trailer. Miyavi is indeed the Jap soldier, he is the one hitting the main actor. He looks soooooo different. I wonder will there be a scene where he opens his shirt…most likely not because he is covered with tattoos
Ahah you’re too funny that you’d want him to be shirtless. Well I don’t think that’ll be the case, he probably has a small part in the film anyway. I’m mostly curious about Unbroken because I admire Mr Zamperini, the real man behind the story.

I just saw the trailer for The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby for the first time yesterday – definitely piqued my interest.
Gone Girl has been on list to see ever since the poster and summary came out for it. Ever since Argo, I have high hopes for Ben Affleck :).
I’m still not sure what to make of The Judge. I think RDJ has the acting chops to pull it off, but I’m not sure what to think of it right now.
I also had similar thoughts on The Kingsman – the trailer doesn’t really give much away. I think I want to see it just for Colin Firth, but I’m not sure if it will be good or not!
Interstellar has been on my must-see list ever since I heard the title. I would go only for it being a Christopher Nolan film, but the latest trailer that came out looks really interesting!
I’m interesting in Mockingjay Part 1 as well, although I’m disappointed that we’ll have to wait yet another year for the second part. I think like most people, I’m excited/sad to see Philip Seymour Hoffman as Plutarch. I’m pretty sure he was able to fill most if not all of his scenes for Part 1. I think it was Part 2 that he missed out on finishing a few scenes.
I had yet to hear of The Imitation Game, so I just watched the trailer – it looks SO good! Matt was just telling me about how much he really wants to see it. Looks like yet another great film for Benedict Cumberbatch :). I think that film just bumped up to be the number one movie I’m anticipating now, with Interstellar right behind it :).
I also thought What If with Daniel Radcliffe looked really cute, and I’m really looking forward to both The Giver and The Maze Runner since I have read both of those books the movies are based on. I’m sure you’re not looking for more to do, but if you haven’t read The Giver, I’d totally recommend it. It’s only about 200 pages long, and it’s a very easy and interesting read. That Is Where I Leave You also looks like it could have some potential; but it could just fall flat even though it appears to have a great cast.

Wonderful post! Interstellar is high on my most-anticipated list, and I’m really interested in The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, Birdman and Gone Girl. I’m also looking forward to Mr. Turner, Foxcatcher, Inherent Vice, Into the Woods, Fury and Knight of Cups (if it actually comes out this year).
Hi Josh! I haven’t met anyone who’s not anticipating Interstellar, man Nolan’s definitely got another big hit on this one. I’m REAAAALLY hoping Knight of Cups will be out this year. Man I’ve been waiting for that for ages!
