THIS JUST IN! The Rum Diary Trailer

Wow, seems like it’s been ages ago since I posted the Rum Diary on-set photos … yep, that was back in Summer 2009! I actually put this movie in my list of most-anticipated-movies of 2010, I had no idea it would take over two years for it to finally get a distributor!

Well, we finally get a trailer now, check it out:

The story is based on a novel by Hunter S. Thompson (a personal friend of Depp’s) with the same name, the 48-year-old actor plays an American journalist named Paul Kemp, which is loosely based on the author’s own life journey. Per Deadline, here’s the official plot of the movie:

“The Rum Diary” tells the increasingly unhinged story of itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Depp). Tired of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local San Juan newspaper run by the downtrodden editor Lotterman (Richard Jenkins). Adopting the rum-soaked lifestyle of the late ‘50s version of Hemingway’s “The Lost Generation,” Paul soon becomes entangled with a very attractive American woman, Chenault (Amber Heard) and her fiancée Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart), a businessman involved in shady property development deals. It is within this world that Kemp ultimately discovers his true voice as a writer and integrity as a man.

This is the second Thompson’s book-to-film adaptation for Depp. The first one was Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas in 1998, where he also played a journalist desperately seeking for the ‘American dream’ with the help of drugs and alcohol hidden in their convertible. Looks like this is a fitting vehicle for Depp who’s known to gravitate towards ‘lost soul’ kind of characters. Can you believe this guy is just TWO YEARS shy of 50?! He doesn’t look a day over 35 if you ask me. I mean, Amber Heard is only 25 years old and they look like they could have gone to college together! I’m not too crazy about her, but doesn’t seem like she gets to do much more than what she did in The Joneses, that is just be sexy and seductive.

Anyway, the whimsical trailer is a hoot… that scene of Depp driving that tiny car looks like a fun scene. It’s fun seeing Depp goofing around and flirting up a storm, the eternally-youthful actor actually looks like himself here, no silly haircut or crazy makeup… and I kind of prefer him in comedic roles. It also seems like everyone, including the normally-serious Jenkins, is having loads of fun in this movie… well naturally with all that rum, ahah. I didn’t see Eckhart until a bit later in the trailer, so I don’t know how much screen time he’ll have. I hope he’ll get a decent amount as I quite like him as an actor.

It’s scheduled to open on October 28 in the US, not sure how wide of an appeal this movie will have even with Depp in it though.

What say you, folks? Are you interested in seeing this one?

  1. Ted S.

Yeah the trailer looks funny, probably just a rental for me though. I wasn’t a big a fan of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, was too weird for me.

    1. This one looks like it might be less weird than ‘Fear and Loathing’ though of course, being a Thompson story, it’ll be pretty quirky. I think it suits Depp though.

  2. I’ve got this scheduled for tomorrow too, since Monday is usually a no news day 😦

I personally didn’t like the trailer. Rather boring and Depp keeps playing himself in all possible movie, which is slowly turning him into Jim Carrey 🙂 But I know he has gazillion of fans and the film will certainly earn some money at the box office thanks to his popularity.

    1. What, Depp turning into Jim Carrey?? Not a chance. Depp is quite versatile I think and I’m surprised you think the trailer is boring Dez, given how much you like Amber Heard 😉

  3. I actually quite liked the trailer. It made me laugh more than I expected. I think there might be more meat to the film than the trailer lets on though. I’ll give it a chance.

    1. Hi Lindsay, yeah it made me laugh too. I like Depp in comedies, he’s actually quite funny in the insufferable The Tourist. I’d like the movie more if it weren’t for Jolie.

      1. I agree, love Depp in comedies and I feel like this film might bring him back to his best. And what is up with Jolie in The Tourist?! She has absolutely no charisma. Plus her cheekbones are out of control, in the worst possible way.

        1. I know!! I said in my review that she must’ve thought the whole movie is a photoshoot as all she did was posing and pouting, completely ridiculous. I only saw it on opening night because of Timothy Dalton & Rufus Sewell who should’ve gotten way more screen time to make it worthwhile.

  4. Looks meh to me. Still not sure what the movie is about (or rather that’s it?). Seems like a pretty decent cast but I probably won’t see it unless the reviews are good in which case it would be a rental.

    1. He…he.. Castor, that’s why I put the synopsis here for you 🙂 I do think only ardent Depp or Thompson’s fans would shell out 10 bucks to see this on the big screen.

  5. Saw Fear and Loathing for the first time last year and was completely blown away by it. I hope this one has that effect too. Thompson was a very interesting person. Have you seen the documentary about him? Well worth checking out to get to know more about him

    1. Hi Nostra, no I haven’t seen that documentary. Depp’s involved in that right, did he narrate it? I might check it out before seeing this movie.

  6. Hi, Ruth and company:

Still think that Bill Murray’s very early take on Hunter Thompson in ‘Where The Buffalo Roam’ is superior to Depp’s take in ‘Fear And Loathing…’. Even though Depp had the Gonzo Journalist’s speech patterns down pat. It’s not enough to put him and the fim’s oddball cast of characters and situations over the top.

‘The Rum Diary’ looks interesting enough. Especially with the addition of Aaron Eckhart. I’m with Ruth in hoping that his role has some substance and meat to it.

    1. Hi Jack, I haven’t seen ‘WTBR’ but w/ Bill Murray, I think I should! Ha..ha.. yeah, I think Depp embodies the Thompson persona rather well, perhaps even too well. Hopefully this movie is good considering how long it’s been delayed!

  7. Saw this one and was glad to see Depp in a trailer for something OTHER than pirates after seeing so many of them earlier in the year.

This one looks like it will be fun. I will be showcasing it on Thursday!

What’s up with Depp and filming in different locales lately? Pirates, The Tourist, Rum Diary. haha.
