Five for the Fifth: JUNE 2013 edition

fiveforthefifth

Hello folks, welcome to the 6th Five for the Fifth of the year!

As is customary for this monthly feature, I get to post five random news item/observation/poster, etc. and then turn it over to you to share your take on that given topic. You can see the previous five-for-the-fifth posts here.

Wahlberg_2Guns1. Today Mark Wahlberg turns 42! It’s funny how I first noticed this Boston-native when he was still Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch. Well, he’s certainly has come a long way from that as he’s now been quite a force to be reckoned with as a movie star, even garnering critical reception with not one but TWO Oscar nominations for The Departed and The Fighter.

Now, I haven’t seen any of his latest films, I mean Broken City and Pain & Gain just didn’t appeal to me. I might rent the later as it looks pretty hilarious. Interestingly enough, Wahlberg’s latest films have consist of him being paired with another movie star. Russell Crowe in Broken City, Dwayne Johnson in Pain & Gain, and now he’s paired up with Denzel Washington in what appears to be an action comedy where he & Denzel played A DEA agent and an undercover Naval Intelligence officer being set up by the mob.

Check out the trailer:

Looks like it’s more of a rental for me. I’ve only seen about 10 of Wahlberg’s movies so far, and I think my favorites are The Fighter and The Other Guys, yes I know, it couldn’t be more different from each other, but I actually think Wahlberg’s quite fun to watch in comedies, though generally he doesn’t really have much range, ahah.

So what’s YOUR favorite Mark Wahlberg’s movie? Will you be watching 2 Guns?

……

2. Now, for my second question, I’m actually borrowing from the Twitter #MTOS series (Movie Talks on Sunday) which you should absolutely follow if you haven’t already. This past weekend, the focus was on Christopher Nolan, hosted by @Pandadeer. I particularly like this question:

Nolan is known for returning to the same pool of actors; who would you like to see added to it?

Nolan_TDKRCast
Nolan with his Batman posse

I like Andrew’s answer below, esp. one about Lazenby:

Recently Matthew McConaughey and Jessica Chastain have joined Nolan’s upcoming sci-fi film Interstellar. Though of course he still has his regular go-to actor Michael Caine in his cast. Now these would be my top 5 wishlist for Nolan to consider: Richard Armitage, Clive Owen, Cate Blanchett, Benedict Cumberbatch and Helen Mirren.

What about you? Which actors would you like to see working with Chris Nolan?

3. It’s been a while since I talk about Bond on this blog! Well, there have been some developments on Bond 24. As you might’ve read on Terrence’s Movie News Monday, Sam Mendes is expected to return in the director’s chair for both Bond 24 and Bond 25, so probably until the end of Daniel Craig’s reign as Bond.

Mendes_Cruz_Bond24

Now, we’ve also got news that Spanish beauty Penelope Cruz has been cast as Bond girl! Wow, so they’re upping the ante as far as getting more quality performers in Bond movies. I mean, Cruz is an Oscar winner for Vicky Cristina Barcelona and has been nominated three times for an Academy Award. Funny that Daniel Craig is probably the first Bond ever to be seduced by a team of husband and wife, ahah. Cruz’s real-life hubby Javier Bardem sort of put the moves on Bond in Skyfall, remember? 😀

Well, most of you might not know this, but this won’t be Cruz’ first time appearing with a Bond actor. As a Timothy Dalton fanatic, I also noticed her brief appearance as Dalton’s girl in the British miniseries FRAMED back in 1992. As Lola Del Moreno, her character name is almost Bond Girl-ish too, no? It’s a great crime/thriller series if you haven’t seen it, fantastic performance by Dalton and David Morrissey.

In any case, what’s your thoughts on Mendes coming back and Cruz as the next Bond girl?

4. Now this is a film that wasn’t on my radar previously but boy, I love the pairing of Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall in this intriguing crime drama CLOSED CIRCUIT.

ClosedCircuit

Martin and Claudia are lawyers — and ex-lovers — who find themselves put at risk after they join the defense team for an international terrorist’s trial.

I was quite impressed with director John Crowley, who did this great indie Boy A with Andrew Garfield (which could be his breakthrough role) and Peter Mullan. We’ve also got the script by Steve Knight (Amazing Grace, Eastern Promises) and a slew of great character actors Ciarán Hinds, Riz Ahmed, Anne-Marie Duff, Julia Stiles and Jim Broadbent. I was VERY impressed by Ahmed in The Reluctant Fundamentalist, so I’m looking forward to seeing him in another film.

What do you think of this  movie? Does it appeal to you?

5. Now, last but not least. Time for some TV updates. Yes, I know I’m quite terrible with keeping up with TV shows, but with Karl Urban, this just might be the new show I’d be [trying] to watch regularly this Fall.

AlmostHumanFOX

We’ve got some detailed synopsis from Teaser-trailer.com:

The year is 2048. John Kennes (Urban), a cop who survived one of the most catastrophic attacks ever made against the police department, wakes up from a 17-month coma, he can’t remember much – except that his partner was killed. Because of the attack he lost one of his legs and is now outfitted with a highly sophisticated synthetic appendage.

Now by mandate, every cop must partner with a robot. And despite his passionate aversion to androids, John is paired up with Dorian (Michael Ealy), a discontinued android with unexpected emotional responses. Although such responses were deemed flaws, it is in these ‘flaws’ that John relates to Dorian most. After all, John is part-machine now, and Dorian is part-human. John and Dorian’s understanding of each other not only complements them, it connects them.

This definitely looks very promising and the set pieces looks pretty sleek. I do realize that with a lot of these shows, the premise and promo seems to be more compelling right off the bat. The show’s created by the same folks behind the popular FOX sci-fi Fringe, J.H. Wyman & J.J. Abrams.

I’ll definitely give this one a shot. I mean a futuristic sci-fi + Karl Urban already sounds like a winner to me 😀

Well, now my last question to you is two-fold: Are you excited about this show? Otherwise, what’s the TV show you’re looking forward to most this coming Fall season?

That’s it for the JUNE 2013 edition of Five for the Fifth, folks. I’d love to hear your thoughts on any of these subjects.

  1. PrairieGirl

Favorite Mark Wahlberg movie? Of course, it has to be Ted! (not you, Ted S, but Ted the teddy bear. Although I can count you as one of my favorites too [smile])

  2. 1. My FAVE of Wahlberg? Well that’s easy: The Italian Job! But 2 Guns does indeed look like a rental to me too.
    2. A fun question about Nolan. hmm, I’d like to see the Nolan-clan include Russell Crowe, Benecio del Toro, Kevin Spacey, Helen Mirren and Mia Wasikowski.
    3. (Thanks for the link, Ruth) Bravo for Penelope Cruz. Not only is she gorgeous, she is more age-appropriate for the Blond Bond. I think she is a great choice. I also wouldn’t mind seeing Kate Beckinsale and…Betty White! 😉
    4. the link for the trailer is “private” but i did find this working link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dDiMp-gTHA

I remember seeing this trailer and I am pretty interested in it. Eric Bana isn’t my fave actor, but the cloak & dagger mystery and spy feel of this one has my attention. Thanks for the spotlight! I am looking forward to The Reluctant Fundamentalist.

    5. I am probably most excited for the final episodes of Breaking Bad. I know a friend who will be all over Almost Human though.

Happy Five for the Fifth day! 🙂

    1. Oh I forgot about The Italian Job, yeah he’s quite good in there.

NICE choices for Nolan’s ‘posse’ candidates. We agree on Mirren but I’d love to see her w/ Crowe again in a Nolan movie.

Ahahaha, Betty White!! Not as M though, even if she’s close in age w/ Dame Judi, ahah.

THANKS for the link, I didn’t realize the trailer I had there was private. You’re the trailers connoisseur T 😀

Well you know why I’m excited for that show, but the premise is intriguing too!

  3. 1. It’s between The Truth About Charlie or The Happening! Yeah, I’m kidding. Hmm… believe it or not, it’s his unexpectedly hilarious take with Will Ferrell in ‘The Other Guys’.
    2. Guy Pearce.
    3. I really wanted Christopher Nolan to give OO7 a whirl. But, with Penelope Cruz in the next film, that’ll certainly take the sting out of it ;-).
    4. I’m intrigued.
    5. Yes, this looks promising, but J.J. Abrams is beginning to wear on me with his overexposure of late.

    Thanks, Ruth 🙂

    1. Ahahaha, I’d believe it for the first one but The Happening? More like a Razzie 😀

Guy Pearce already is in Nolan’s posse in Memento, but yeah, I’d like to see him do another film w/ Nolan.

Yeah, I’d like to see Nolan do it too, maybe after Mendes’ reign is done.

The cast is great isn’t it? Nice to see Julia Stiles in there too.

I hear ya about Abrams, I do hope this one stays on because of Urban though.

  4. Favorite Wahlberg movie is Boogie Nights, by a mile and a half.

Still waiting for that “official” confirmation of Mendes as director for the next two, the reports have still been a little “unofficial” for me, but I would be PSYCHED if he were coming back for 24 and 25. That would be incredible for the franchise… Skyfall was easily the best directed Bond film ever. And of course Penelope Cruz would be a great Bond girl too! 😀

    1. A mile and a half eh? Is that how long his … um, never mind! 😀

Hmmm, I thought those two have been confirmed but yeah, I have no problem at all w/ Mendes coming back and Cruz as Bond girl. It’d have been a hoot if Penelope had been the Bond girl when Bardem was the villain, ahah. Especially if she played the role of Severine!

      1. LOL! You’re funny. 😀

Anyways, the best I could see online was “unofficially confirmed by (something like) Celeb411 (or Showbiz411 I don’t know)” I still didn’t feel it was concrete.

  5. Ted S.

Wow, can’t believe we’re halfway through 2013 already, geez time seems to go by so fast as you get older.

    1. I agree Walberg’s much better doing comedies, but when he tries to do drama he always overacted his role. I still don’t know how he got nomination for his role in The Departed, out of all the actors in that movie, he was the worst and yet the Academy nominated him? I don’t think he’s done anything that I could consider favorite but that new movie with Denzel looks good, I’ll definitely go see it since I’m an action movies junkie.

    2. I’d love to see Nolan cast Richard Armitage or Clive Owen as his next leading man, those two actors deserves to be in the A-list class and Nolan can help them get there. I don’t mind McConaughey but was surprised Nolan cast him in his new film. Maybe Nolan was impress with his performance in another sci-fi flick, Contact?

    3. Very happy to see Mendes back even if it’s not confirmed by the studio yet and glad they’ll cast someone more age appropriate for the Bond girl, as I mentioned on Terrence’s site, I don’t want to see Craig messing around with a 20 year old. That’s too creepy when he’s old enough to be her father.

    4. Saw CLOSED CIRCUIT a while back, looks interesting so maybe a rental.

    5. I’m with Michael on this, I’m getting a little tire of Abrams love in Hollywood lately. He’s good but I don’t get all the love he’s receiving from every Hollywood folks. But Almost Human looks cool and I’ll check it out when it airs this fall. The only show in the fall I’m most looking forward to is The Walking Dead, one of the only two TV shows I watch regularly.

    1. Ted S.

Oops! meant to say I saw CLOSED CIRCUIT trailer a while back, I haven’t seen the actual film yet. LOL.

    2. It’s crazy isn’t it? 2013 flies by way too fast for me.

Ahah yeah, it’s funny about The Departed. I’d think Damon or DiCaprio did a better performance there? I knew 2 Guns is more your thing, I might rent that one.

Yep, totally agree w/ Armitage and Owen. Oh man if I had all the money in the world, I’d love to be an executive producer and casting agent at the same time, ahah. Yeah, we’ll see how McConaughey would far in Interstellar, but I generally am not too thrilled w/ his casting.

Ahah, very true about Craig, he’s already looking like he’s in mid 50s!

I might see Closed Circuit on the big screen if there’s a screening, I LOVE the cast!

I hear ya about Abrams. I mean he’s got two giant Hollywood franchises to work on, plus all the TV shows he’s involved in!

      1. Ted S.

Oh yeah, DiCaprio or Damon should’ve gotten nominated instead, Walberg’s performance consist of yelling and more yelling, yet the Academy voters thought he did a great job?? That’s why I don’t care for the Academy much.

I have a theory about Nolan, same with Cameron, these guys are control freaks and they’ll only work with actors who they can direct/command or someone who respects them. They won’t work with big name stars unless they feel those stars respect them. I think that’s why Nolan went with someone like McConaughey instead of bigger named stars, apparently he and DiCaprio had some disagreements while making Inception.

  6. 1. I’ve always said I like Mark Wahlberg. But looking at his filmography, he makes a lot of movies that don’t appeal to me at all. I am interested to see what he does with Denzel though!

    2. Christopher Nolan is amazing for many reasons. One of them is for picking just the right cast for his films. But what would happen if you mixed Nolan with Daniel Day-Lewis? Not saying they are a movie match made in heaven, but would you be interested in seeing what that project was like? I would hands-down!

    3. If Skyfall is a hint at what Mendes can do with the series I’m all on board with him coming back. As for Cruz, she’s a beauty, but the whole Bond girl things doesn’t excite me. I would much rather them focus on creating a strong and relevant female character than just emphasizing the whole ‘Bond girl’ thing.

    4. I really like Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall so I’m all over this one. Those are two talents who need more spotlight.

    5. Honestly, I don’t know if I’ll see this or not. I just don’t devote myself to much television. I love Urban and think he needs more movie roles. But I don’t know if that’s enough to attach me to a running TV series or not.

Good stuff as always Ruth. Love answering these.

    1. I’m with you Keith. I like Wahlberg but his movies don’t appeal to me much either. I don’t think I’ll be seeing TED or Broken City. This one might be ok as it’s got Denzel in it.

Oooh, Nolan and DDL would be electrifying! Let’s hope that happens one day.

Well, I’m hoping that given Cruz’s pedigree, perhaps they’d create a formidable Bond girl that’s more Vesper Lynd than Christmas Jones, y’know what I mean?

Yay, glad you and I share the same sentiment about Bana and Hall!

Come on Keith! Show your love for Urban 😀 I’m excited for this show, but if for some reason it didn’t pan out, I do want to see him do more movie roles.

  7. 1. I don’t really like Walhberg, some of his performances as the one in The Happening are just embarrassing, but he was amazing in The Departed.

    2. Oh, definitely Armitage 🙂 Also Vera Farmiga and Tilda Swinton.

    3. Great news about Mendes returning. I had no idea Cruz will be next Bond girl, big news!

    4. Lawyers in hopeless situations? Yeah I can relate to that 😛

    5. I don’t think I will watch this one, I already watch so many shows 🙂 I’m looking forward to next season of American Horror Story it looks awesome and Kathy Bates said she will play character 5x worse than Misery 😛

    1. Ahah, well The Happening IS embarrassing but I think it’s more of M. Night’s fault 😀

Oooh, I like Farmiga and Swinton. Wouldn’t it be great if Armitage and those two ladies are in a film together? It doesn’t even have to be Nolan’s and I’d watch it in a heartbeat!!

I don’t think the news is confirmed yet, but yeah, I think it’d be very cool indeed!

Ahah, I knew you would, Sati. How many more years do you have to go before you take the Bar exam??

Yeah I know you’ve got a ton of shows you’re watching already. Oh Kathy Bates is joining AHS? Wow, that’s quite a feat for the show!

      1. Oh well I’m taking the bar exam in 3 months and if I get in it’s 3 more years of studying and legal training till final bar exam – if I pass that I’m going to be an attorney 🙂 So it’s still a looooong way 😉

But at least as of today I have a degree and a diploma 🙂

        1. Man, it takes a lot to be a lawyer! But hey, you can charge and arm & a leg once you become one, ahah.

That is cool that you have a degree already Sati, you are one smart girl!

  8. Love me some 5 for the 5th! This edition is awesome.

Just one little thing. Mark Wahlberg, though he deserved it, wasn’t Oscar-nominated for The Fighter 😦 It was so sad because everyone else did (Christian Bale and Melissa Leo even won) except for him.

    1. My favorite Wahlberg movies are The Departed and Date Night, but one of his best performances is in the awful I Heart Huckabees. He was so funny in that one. I don’t think I’ll be watching 2 Guns though. Doesn’t seem like my cup of tea.

    2. Emma Watson, Clive Owen, Cate Blanchett and Benedict Cumberbatch are great ideas. I’d also like to see him work with Tom Hiddleston, Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield.

    3. I’m very happy that Mendes is coming back as he’s one of my favorite directors and he did such a great job with Skyfall. Thrilled to know that Penélope might be the next Bond girl because she’s one of my top 5 actresses. So sexy and even more talented. LOVE HER.

    4. Closed Circuit sounds good. I’ll definitely give that a watch. That poster is such a Michael Clayton ripoff, though.

    1. Hi Fernando! Glad you like this edition, that makes me happy! 😀

Oh yeah, I should mention that Wahlberg got the award for producing The Fighter, not the acting part. Thanks to Andrew for correcting. He was freakin’ hilarious in Date Night!!

OMG, how could I forget Cumberbatch! Yes, I’d LOVE to see Armitage and Cumberbatch in a Nolan movie, preferably together. Um, I mean in a movie, not together as a couple, ahah.

Glad to hear you’re thrilled about Bond 24. I sure hope it’d top even Skyfall.

Yeah, the poster design isn’t exactly enticing. I do love the cast though.

    1. Hey Andrew, I tried leaving a comment on your post but it won’t let me. I’ve tried like 6-7 times already. So I’ll just post ’em here:

Awesome Andrew, glad you’re able to do this month’s FFTF! No hard feelings about last month as you were sippin’ Pina Coladas, definitely more fun than answering these questions, ahah.

I don’t blame you about your thoughts on Wahlberg. He doesn’t have any range really, though I think he’s fun to watch in comedies.

Hmmm, Bruce Willis is an interesting answer. I think he certainly COULD act given the right script and direction. I agree he’s awesome in Moonrise Kingdom.

“…I kind of like my Bond girls to be up and comers” I hear ya. I kind of feel that way too sometimes but at the same time, with someone like Judi Dench playing M, why can’t we get quality actress as Bond girls too? Not necessarily as well known as Cruz though. I personally would rather see someone like Sophia Myles as Bond girl. She’s a terrific actress but is relatively unknown. She was in Dr Who, the CBS vampire series Moonlight, and also the lead in Tristan + Isolde.

Top Chef huh? I take it you’re into cooking then?

      Thanks Andrew!

      1. That’s weird that it won’t let you comment….but thanks for leaving it here for me 😀
Love the Sophia Myles mention. I remember loving her in Tristan + Isolde and then wondering what happened to her!

        I love to cook…and I hate watching TV…LOL

        1. Yeah I don’t know why as I was able to leave you a comment in another post. Hey, glad to hear you like Sophia too. She kind of looks like Kate Winslet a bit but she’s sooo underrated.

You like to cook but hate watching TV? WOW that’s quite unusual, most people are the other way around, ahah. Good for you Andrew!

  9. Not a big fan of Wahlberg. I love The Departed despite him, ha ha. His character was always ragigng on Leo and it made me sad 😦 But he was good in The FIghter I thought.
Actors that should work with Nolan? Benedict Cumberbatch is a big yes! 🙂 Waltz would be interesting too, because I really can’t imagine him outside of a Tarantino movie. I would also suggest Johnny Depp, Michael Fassbender and maybe Jennifer Lawrence as well.
I’m glad Mendes is coming back, though I was really excited for there to be a Nolan Bond film. Hopefully there’s more time for that later, it might even be better for him to come in with a new Bond actor, you know? As for Cruz, meh. I’m not that familiar with her, but I’m sure she’ll do fine.
That show looks awesome! You can cover a lot of philosophical territory with robots! I probably won’t watch it as it happens, because I just can’t keep up with tv shows very well. Hope you’ll do some posts on it and let us know how it is!

    1. Hi Hunter! I actually haven’t seen The Departed but I heard Wahlberg wasn’t the best performer in that one compared to DiCaprio and Damon. He was good in The Departed.

Well, Johnny Depp technically is joining Nolan’s posse as he’s cast in Wally Pfister’s film Transcendence that Nolan is producing 😀

Yeah, I was excited when the rumor mill had him directing Bond. Ah well, maybe in the next 5 years? You’re not familiar w/ Cruz? I haven’t seen too many of her films but she’s quite famous though.

Oh yeah, I plan on watching Almost Human and blog about it. You’ve been doing a great job covering the Star Trek series so I’ll look to you for inspiration 🙂

      1. Aww gee thanks 🙂
Oh wow, didn’t know that about Depp and Nolan. That’s pretty exciting I guess!
I think the only thing I’ve seen Cruz in is Pirates of the Caribbean 4. 😦 I try not to think about that film too much. Probably not the best intro to her work, though I thought she did fine in the movie.

        1. Ahah, yeah I hate those Pirates movies too. I think I only saw the first one and the third one at a friend’s house, such a terrible franchise!

  10. My favorite Walhberg movie is probably The Departed, but I’m just now realizing that I haven’t seen many movies with him in it.

I think Daniel Craig could team up with Nolan at some point actually. Preferably, it would be in a Bond film, which would just be amazing. I’m fine with Mendes making the next one though, since he did a fine job with Skyfall. And Cruz just seems like an obvious choice to be a Bond girl. I think it fits, even though it won’t give her much room to show all that she’s capable of as an actress.

    1. Do you like Wahlberg generally? I think he’s watchable in certain roles, but definitely not a *great* actor.

I don’t mind seeing Craig + Nolan in a Bond film, though I really only want to see Craig in one more Bond film and at the most 2. I’m ready for a new and darker looking Bond to be honest. Oh I think Cruz can still show her chops in a Bond film, I mean just look at what Dame Judi Dench could do with the role of M.

      1. I don’t have any problems with Walhberg. I’ve liked him in everything that I’ve seen him in. I’ve just only seen him in four or so movies probably.

I guess it’ll be interesting to see who they pick next for Bond. Personally, I’m not too anxious to know though. I’m a huge fan of Craig’s Bond. As far as Cruz goes, it just seems that the role of Bond girl doesn’t usually inspire great performances. But then again, I suppose a good actress will be good in whatever she’s in…. And I do love Dench as M.

        1. Yeah I think he’s likable, that’s why I think people like watching him in movies even if he’s essentially playing the same character in a lot of his films.

I like Craig’s Bond too, but I think four films is enough from him though. I wish Dalton had at least 3 Bond films under his belt, I still regard him as my fave Bond.

  11. 2 Guns is a rent or a really cheap movie night. I love Nolan but I do want him to expand his actors a bit further. Christoph Waltz would be a great addition. I’d love for him to discover a younger actor too. All of his movies are about grown ups. Let’s see what he can do with a younger actor or actress. I love Bana (so underrated) and Rebecca Hall (minus the terrible Iron Man 3), so that looks interesting. And I’m glad Karl Urban is finally getting some attention. Too badass not to be in more things.

    1. Yeah, I think his favoritism can get a bit annoying. I mean does he have to have Michael Caine in EVERY movie??! Waltz would be awesome, but I hear ya about younger actors. He rarely has kids/young people in the center of his films.

Glad to hear you love Bana and Hall. Oh and amen about Urban. In fact, all three of those actors should be far busier than they currently are.

  12. Was it Donny or Mark who appeared in Sixth Sense?

I second your choicw on Benny and Cate for Nolan’s actors….Love to see them with Cillian 😉

Skipping the rest of the questions till the last.
I am not sure when is fall…but TV shows that I am dying to see this years are Under The Dome (CBS), Peaky Blinders ( BBC), Doctor Who series special & series 8 (BBC), Never Mind The Buzzcocks (BBC), Luxury Comedy series 2(BBC), and Sherlock series 3 (it’s still not clear whether it will be aired late this year or early next year)
Wow….BBC has taken over my watching life completely!

    1. It was Donnie Wahlberg and he was good in Sixth Sense. Yeah, Benny + Cate + Cillian would make an awesome movie!!

I can’t wait for Sherlock season 3 too, esp after that WHOA cliffhanger on the last episode of season 2!! Which one is Under the Dome??

  13. Love these Ruth, great work! 🙂

    1. I actually watched The Fighter last night and I absolutely loved it. That and The Departed are probably the best things I’ve seen Wahlberg in.

    2. I’m definitely with you on Cumberbatch with this, I reckon he and Nolan could work brilliantly together! I think someone above mentioned Mia Wasikowska as well, and I reckon she’d be great in his little posse. I can see him working with someone like Amy Adams too.

    3. I would love to see Sam Mendez back for more Bonds, I thought Skyfall was brilliantly directed. Interesting to have Cruz as the Bond girl too, which suggests that it’ll be a much bigger part. I can’t see her being brought on board just for meaningless eye candy.

    4. I think Closed Circuit looks pretty interesting, I’d probably check that out. The trailer makes it seem a bit of a cross between The Sweeney & Shadow Dancer, although hopefully it’s more like the latter 🙂

    5. I think this could be pretty good for some light entertainment, I don’t expect it to be too much of a deep, complicated story or anything. There’s not much else I’m looking forward to though, I’m not sure what’s coming out. I have plenty of other TV stuff to catch up with in any case.

    1. Hi Chris!

The Fighter is excellent indeed. You should give some of Wahlberg’s comedies a shot. The Other Guys is a hoot, the pairing of him & Will Ferrell is pretty hilarious.

I somehow think Cumberbatch would work well w/ Nolan, I’m surprised he hasn’t cast him yet.

Yeah, that’s what I hope for from Cruz as Bond girl. I think it’s time to have the Bond girl having more prominent role in the story, kind of like Vesper in Casino Royale which is my fave.

Oh yeah, Shadow Dancer looks good too. Both Bana and Owen are so underrated I just can’t fathom why. I mean both have leading man charisma & talent, and have done some terrific projects in the past.

Which shows are you planning to watch this year? I’m so terrible in catching up w/ shows, but w/ Urban in it, I definitely am gonna try! 😀

  14. 1: Can’t say I’m Whalberg’s biggest fan, Ruth. (Maybe that’s because I kept getting called Marky Mark myself in my youth and resented him for it. 😉 On occasion he can be quite good, though, and I thought he was perfect in Boogie Nights.

2: I’d lIke to see a Scottish actor appear in more Nolan movies. Maybe McAvoy or Bobby? 😉

3: can’t really complain about Mendes’ return. You know I’m not a massive Bond fan but he done a great job on Skyfall and Cruz is an ideal Bond girl.

4: I feel that Eric Bana is starting to slip in quality recently. Deadfall was an absolute turkey and one that I didn’t even bother writing about. As a result, I don’t get too worked up about his projects. Who knows, though, he’s not dead in water yet.

5: sounds like a good little series. I think I could get into this one.

    1. Hi there Mark! What, people called you Marky Mark?? Ahah, no wonder you didn’t like him, ahah. I still need to see Boogie Nights, but you should check out The Fighter too.

Oooh yeah, McAvoy, Bobby and even GB if he gets his act together. I’d love to see McAvoy + GB in a Nolan thriller, maybe as nemesis or something?

It’s great that Mendes’ able to turn even non-Bond fans around to actually appreciate the franchise. He’s done well in that regard.

Oh bummer about Deadfall. I read a couple of reviews that praised it, but it didn’t really appeal to me as of yet. I hope he turns it around for you, I think he’s a pretty good actor.

I hope Almost Human would turn out good Mark, I’d love to have another sci-fi series like Battlestar Galactica to look forward to every week 😀

  15. 1. I really like him in The Fighter and The Departed. Though his performances were overshadowed by other actors in those films, but he played the characters pretty good. And yeah, he was ridiculous in The Happening. Boogie Nights was great too, and I’m curious about I Heart Huckabees, need to see that. 2 Guns sounds like…not my cup of tea, but we’ll see…
    2. I want to see him working with more comedic actors like Jim Carrey or Jack Black (or maybe I just want to see those actors play in an action sci-fi film? Have they?). Emma Stone/Watson could be great choices too.
    3. I have a mixed feelings about Mendes coming back. I loooved Skyfall. I see it as a transition from this dark Bond into (hopefully) more classic, witty and the more glamorous and gadget freak Bond. Skyfall was a great entry into that metamorphosis, and Mendes was the right choice to emphasize that dramatic turn. I’m worried that the next entries will also be as gloomy as Skyfall. But I’m still excited on which direction Mendes will take. Cruz was not my first choice, but she’s okay I guess.
    4. Pretty interesting trailer. And I can see that film on my watchlist.
    5. This is the first time I heard about Almost Human. From the synopsis I wasn’t that excited, but the trailer looks good and I love Fringe, so maybe I’ll try the pilot first when it comes out.

    1. Hi Fariz! Yeah, a few people have mentioned that either Leo or Matt Damon should’ve been nominated instead of Wahlberg in The Departed. I think The Happening is just a ridiculous movie, not just on the acting front.

Hmm interesting, though I don’t think Nolan does comedies, ahah. I think Carrey was in a sci-fi? Not sure which one though, I don’t really follow his career. I like Emma Watson, yeah I could see her working w/ Nolan one day.

I hear ya about the dark tone of Skyfall. I don’t know if it’s gloomy necessarily. I’m curious what he’d do next and how prominent Cruz’ role would be.

Glad to hear you like Closed Circuit, it’s worth a rental at the very least.

I’ve only seen a couple of Fringe episodes, but I like the premise of this one better. I hope it’ll deliver!

  16. Closed Circuit! Thanks for bringing this to my attention Ruth…looks like an interesting film and I hadn’t heard of it previously.

  17. 1) Boogie Nights, easily.

    2) Can’t think of anyone off the top of my head, but Nolan always seems to get the best out of his cast.

    3) No complaints here about Cruz being a Bond girl. Kind of surprised they are going with a big name this time though.

    4) I love the cast so it will be on my radar for sure.

    5) Not sure I will be watching Almost Human, but I do like Karl Urban. My most anticipated show this fall is the final season of Breaking Bad! August 11 cannot come soon enough!

    1. Oh I still need to watch that one, Eric, but it seems like a role tailor-made for Wahlberg 🙂

I’m a bit surprised about Cruz as well as she’s quite famous, but it made me think that Mendes might want to go a different direction for a Bond girl than what’s been done in the past, so we’ll see.

Yeah, awesome cast for Closed Circuit! Hope it’ll be a good one.

Ah right, it’s the final season for Breaking Bad isn’t it? I know a few people at my work are anticipating that as well.

  18. 1) Boogie Nights, The Departed and Three Kings were the best for me. You’re right Ruth Wahlberg doesn’t have a lot of range but he has a type and he sticks to it. Haven’t seen Ted yet.

    4) Not sure about the trailer for Closed Circuit. Loved Bana in his breakout film Chopper but not much since. An extremely violent film to say the least but based on the true story of Australia’s most notorious criminal Mark “Chopper” Read. Actually authored a book called “How to Shoot Friends & Influence People”.

I remember seeing Rebecca Hall as a blonde, along with the up and coming Andrew Garfield, in Red Riding: In the Year of Our Lord 1974 for Channel 4 over on British TV.

    5) Almost Human looks interesting. Haven’t seen Michael Ealy since Showtime’s underrated Sleeper Cell.

    1. Hi Dave, sorry I’m still catching up w/ comments 😀 Yeah I knew about Chopper, boy I didn’t recognize Bana in that. It’s funny that he used to be a stand up comedian!

Hall was in Red Riding too? I really want to see that one, I actually posted the trailer a while back.

  19. 1. You should check out Broken City. It’s not brilliant, it’s not terribly memorable but for the couple of hours it’s on you’ll have fun. It’s good to see Wahlberg and Crowe bounce off each other. I can’t say that I’ve really got a favourite Wahlberg role – think he’s solid rather than outstanding.

    2. The suggestion of Vera Farmiga is excellent – I’d like to see more of Joseph Gordon-Levitt. I see the point about not over-using people but more of JGL is always good.

    3. Brilliant news that Sam Mendes is possibly coming back, he did such a brilliant job on Skyfall. I’m never bothered that much by who the Bond girls are but I would like to see

4, Rebecca Hall and Eric Bana are an appealing duo but not sure this film is appealing. Sounds like another Duplicity/The International – should be good but will ultimately disappoint.

    5. Love Karl Urban – this show looks ok. Hope we get it over here in the UK.

    1. I might give Broken City a shot if I’m bored, ahah. You’re right I think Wahlberg is solid, but not spectacular.

I think JGL is so versatile. He’s already in Nolan’s posse though.

Seems like you didn’t finish the sentence there about Bond girl?

Hmmm, you’re right it’s a bit like The International, but hopefully it’ll be much better than Duplicity!

I hope the show’d air in the UK as well, I’d think he has many fans there too :d

  20. Happy birthday for Mark Wahlberg (a little late, I know). I don’t know if I have a favorite, but I’d like to answer his role in The Fighter.

And for Cruz as a Bond girl, well, she’s got what it takes. That means, after her husband played the villain, she’s going to be the Bond gal. Ahah, I like the word ‘seduced’ there 😀 Weird, in a way. She looked so young in that picture with Timothy Dalton.

    1. Hi Andina, no such thing as a late greeting 😀 He’s good in The Fighter, though Bale easily outshone him I think.

Ahah well the Bond girls are always so seductive y’know. She was quite young in Framed, probably early 20s? It wasn’t a memorable role though, she didn’t have much to do in it.

  21. 1. My favorite Mark Wahlberg movie has to be The Departed. Not only is it one of my favorite films, but it also features a great scene-stealing performance from him.

    2. I’d love to see Michael Fassbender and Ethan Hawke work with Nolan. Maybe not on the same project, but I’d be interested to see the results.

    3. It’s great to see Mendes coming back, and I’m very intrigued about Cruz’s casting. She could be a great Bond girl. I just hope her star power isn’t too big for such a role.

    4. I’m in! Looking forward to this film. 🙂

    5. I like Karl Urban, but I probably won’t watch the show. I’m curious about the cop show Graceland, as well as Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

    1. I think you’re the first one who said Wahlberg deserved his Oscar nom, ahah. Seems like a lot of people think the other actors deserve it more.

Oooh, great pick w/ Fassbender and Hawke. Seems like Hawke are doing a lot of horror films lately.

Yeah, her star power seems bigger than most Bond girls, but that might be ok if the role is well-written.

Glad to hear and nice that you’re a fan of Karl too. Yep, I’m also looking forward to Agents of SHIELD!

  22. I’m really not happy to see Penelope Cruz in the new Bond film. I like to see fresh faces in these roles and I’ve been known to skip her films. The new Pirates was one I forbade myself to see because of her.

    1. I hear ya Chris, and I’m actually not a huge fan of Cruz. But that said, I’m curious what she’d do with the role. Ahah, well Pirates movies are terrible anyways, not exactly her fault, LOL

  23. 1. Hmmm 2 Guns looks like quite cool to me. I loved Wahlberg in The Departed. He was hilarious!
    2. Great call on Waltz. I’d love to see Charlize Theron get in there too!
    3. Brilliant news that Mendes is back, hope he can top Skyfall! Don’t care much for Cruz. I want to see Gina Carano as a Bond girl!
    4. Wish I could get more excited by Closed Circuit but just didn’t really grab me with that trailer despite the quality of the cast.
    5. I’m just ctahing up with Breaking Bad and I cannot wait for the final half of the last season. Can’t believe it’s nearly over!

    1. 1. Have u seen The Other Guys Pete? Wahlberg was hilarious in that too.

      2. I love Theron, good call ther!

      3. I want Gina Carano as Bond girl w/ her boyfriend Henry Cavill as 007, I mean he was already considered for the role.

      4. I hope Closed Circuit is good. Eric Bana needs a hit!!

      5. It’s got such a great run tho, one of the biggest hits of TV surely.

      Thanks Pete!
