THIS JUST IN! Skyfall teaser trailer debuts

As you loyal readers know by now, there’s not a lot of movies we anticipate more than Skyfall here at FlixChatter. My pal Ted and I even started a 007 Chatter series as a countdown to the movie in November.

There’s a lot to be excited for here apart from Daniel Craig returning, there’s Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes directing, flanked by a slew of Oscar winning actors, and now we’ve got this tantalizing new trailer. Check it out:

Ok, this definitely amp up my excitement tenfold. I love that first shot of Bond overlooking the London skyline with the Big Ben looming in the background. There’s something foreboding and eerie in that majestic shot, and that shot of a row of coffins draped in British flags is disquieting.

The whole word association game starts out with Bond looking unperturbed but his mood abruptly changes with the mere mention of Skyfall…

Country: London
Gun: Shot
Agent: Provocateur
Murder: Employment
Skyfall: [pause]
Skyfall: Done!

With that Bond leaves the room as Dame Judi Dench’s M and Ralph Fiennes’ Mallory watches from behind the glass. Just what the heck is Skyfall? Is that what’s written on his secret mission dossier, kind of like For Your Eyes Only? And who is Mallory? Is he a good or bad guy?

No sign of Javier Bardem as the baddie however, perhaps Mendes is saving him for the full trailer? In any case, the rest of the 40-second teaser shows that all the reasons we go see a Bond movie is present: glamorous locations (filming took place in the UK, Shanghai, and Turkey), sexy Bond girls frolicking with our hero, Bond being chased all over and high-octane action shots such as a train crash, etc. All of those are well and good, but this one promises something *more* which is the most intriguing part of all.

The trailer ends with Bond saying “Some men are coming to kill us. We’ve got to kill them first.” Well, will he? There’s rumor swirling around that an important character might die in this film. I have an inkling who might that be, but I’m sure I’ll still be gasping when that happens. This looks poised to be Craig’s best bond yet. Bring it on, Mr. Mendes!

What do you think folks? Don’t you wish this comes out next week instead of November? 🙂

  1. I like the trailer. It has a different feel than the previous installments, in particular the use of relatively static shots. Its focus is on intrigue and not just frenetic action. I am curious what psychological test they were putting Bond through.

    1. “Its focus is on intrigue and not just frenetic action.” Spot on comment, Jamie, yes that’s the reason why I like this, seems to have something deeper than what you usually get in a Bond flick.

    1. Awesome, Julian! Now I wish I had drafted Fiennes for mine. I did initially but because of the limit of people to draft this time around, I had to drop him 😦

      1. I was planning to get Evans but he got picked by Joel before i could get to him, so i used ben as a replacement. And you do get points for Hiddleston with the Avengers, so that’s somethin

        1. Ah yes, I’m very glad I snatched Hiddleston when I got the chance. Armitage will be big after The Hobbit comes out as well, so hopefully those will nab me some great points, too 😀

  2. I haven’t been a Bond fan since Goldeneye but as always I have to see these films and it’ll be interested to see what direction they take Bond in this time.

    1. Wow, you’re the first one who didn’t like Casino Royale then? Well as a Brit you kind of have to see a Bond movie right? 😉 Hopefully this will be more like CR than Quantum of Solace!

  3. I kind of missed something “Bond” about the trailer. Maybe the theme or something. Just didn’t quite feel like a Bond trailer for me. Doesn’t mean I’m any less excited about the film though, the footage did look great!

    1. Yeah, the theme song isn’t used, but that last bit at the end does sound very Bond-inspired so I’m cool w/ it. You’re right the footage looks great indeed!

As always a Bond teaser always look great, lets hope the final product is as good as what they’re teasing us with. I remember the teasers for The World is Not Enough and Die Another Day got so many people excited, including myself, then of course we saw the actual films, yikes! But Mendes is a good director so I hope he deliver a great Bond flick. Maybe we’ll see a full trailer in front of The Dark Knight Rises.

    1. You’re right Ted, let’s hope this lives up to the final product! I don’t remember the teasers for those two Bond flicks you mentioned, but just as well, ahah. I’m kinda hoping we’d get a teaser for Man of Steel in front of TDKR as well, I mean that’d be a perfect marketing venue given it’s also from DC!

      1. Ted S.

I’m pretty sure Warner will debut Man of Steel teaser before The Dark Knight Rises, it makes sense for them to do so. Also, since this will be the first Bond film to be shown on IMAX, I assume we’ll see a full trailer by then too, I hope so anyway.

I try not to get too exited about movie teasers and trailers now, I got burned too many times, Wolverine and Cowboys & Aliens came to mind, great teasers/trailers, awful movies.

        1. I hear ya, Ted. Cowboys & Aliens certainly have an amazing trailer but I haven’t even seen the movie yet due to its dismal reviews. Dark Shadows also fall into the same camp. I did hear about someone who’s working in the SFX for Man of Steel that he’s very impressed by what he’s seen so far. Let’s hope he’s not just touting his own work, ahah. I’m hugely optimistic for it though.

  5. I really hope that Bardem and Fiennes will get their chance to shine here. and that the film will be better than the last one, which was at times unwatchable.

    1. Hi Sati, I sure hope so, too! We don’t even see Javier in the trailer yet though, but I’m sure he’d be quite memorable as a Bond baddie 🙂

P.S. I’m not a big fan of Quantum either, but hopefully this will be more in the vein of Casino Royale.

  6. I like it! Hopefully, this is a big bounce back from the mediocre Quantum of Solace and let’s cross our fingers Mendes can balance the need for hard hitting action with more subtle character moments.

    1. Yes, fingers crossed Castor! But if there’s a director who could balance the action w/ character development, it’d be Mendes.

    1. He…he.. it’s great to be a Bond fan isn’t it? Glad to see the quality is greatly improved since the Moore days, though I still wish Dalton has one more chance to be Bond as he’s pretty much similar to how Craig is now, but without the credit 😦

  7. Looking forward to Bond being back! This trailer didn’t really do it for me but it is still great to see the work that’s being done. I look forward to the first full trailer for this one to be more in terms of the “Bond factor!”

  8. Excellent trailer. I was so excited to watch it as I was eating my brekkie on TV!

Great opening for the trailer. Things look grim for Bond. And got a weird kick out of seeing a VW bug get exploded.

  9. “Don’t you wish this comes out next week instead of November? ”

    Yes. 😀

Sick looking teaser trailer though. The FX on the subway derailment look great. Love seeing Bond have to pass a psych exam… pretty sweet!

I’m geeking out over it. I cant wait to see it.

            1. What? You don’t like Vader?? I think him yelling NOOOOOO is the best thing of Star Wars 😀 Just kidding Fogs, methinks Skywill WILL BE GOOD. Aren’t I optimistic or what?

  10. Impressive teaser. I’m really excited for Skyfall. I’m not a big fan of Quantum of Solace but loved Casino Royale. The cast is amazing and I think Sam Mendes (one of my favorites) will do a very good job.

    1. I feel the same way as you. LOVED CR but ‘Quantum’ leaves much to be desired. It just got way too brutish for me that the sense of *fun* of a Bond movie is lost to me.
