Trailer Spotlight: Maggie Gyllenhaal’s THE BRIDE! – a punk-rock take on the classic gothic horror with Jessie Buckley & Christian Bale

With news that Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein is returning to select theaters in North America for one week, starting today, we got a brand new trailer of The Bride! that sends a jolt of energy to a dreary January! I haven’t done a trailer post in ages, but this one looks too good not to share.

I’m liking this punk rock take on Frankenstein’s monster and his betrothed, and the cast is killer!! It’s a reimagining of Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel, set in 1930s Chicago and done with a Bonnie and Clyde-esque spin on the story, focusing on the resurrected Bride (Jessie Buckley) and the Monster (Christian Bale) as they start a life of crime and romance. After The Lost Daughter, I was curious what Maggie Gyllenhaal would direct next, and this one looks like quite a departure from the smaller family drama.

Fresh out of the Golden Globe win (and hopefully more to follow), Buckley is currently my favorite actress. I miss seeing Bale on screen, so it’s so exciting to see this dynamic duo striking up a diabolical romance that leaves a heavy trail of blood in its wake. As a huge fan of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, I smiled with glee to see Rachel Dawes directing Batman here. It’s also a family affair for Maggie as she cast her husband, Peter Sarsgaard, and brother Jake Gyllenhaal in prominent roles. Annette Bening and Penélope Cruz round out the excellent cast.

I have been anticipating this movie for some time as it was previously scheduled for release last September and then pushed to October, 2025. Well, looks like it finally secured a final release date in the United States: March 6, 2026, in IMAX. Per Wikipedia, seems that part of the reason for the delay is the change of financing from Netflix to Warner Bros. Netflix pulled out of the project over disagreement on shooting in New York vs. New Jersey that Netflix preferred for its lower expenses.

Well, I’m glad that Maggie got to do the film the way she wanted, and I’m hopeful it’ll be a great gothic crime thriller that’ll look amazing on the big screen. If what Sarsgaard shared with THR is any indication, this looks like a banger of a movie!

The Bride is so ambitious because the script really is one of the best scripts. Look, my wife wrote it, so I’ll just go ahead and say that it’s the best script I’ve ever read. It really was satisfying on so many levels… Jessie is the most abstract, random, free-flowing, in-the-moment actor you could ever work with. She can also sing and dance, by the way — big time. There are big dance numbers and stuff in the movie.”

What do you think of The Bride! trailer?

    1. Right on!! This cast is seriously SICK!! Happy to see Bale back in a prominent role again, I haven’t seen him in a while. Buckley has been on 🔥 lately, hoping to see her take the big trophy come Oscar night!
