Trailer Spotlight: Maggie Gyllenhaal’s THE BRIDE! – a punk-rock take on the classic gothic horror with Jessie Buckley & Christian Bale

With news that Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein is returning to select theaters in North America for one week, starting today, we got a brand new trailer of The Bride! that sends a jolt of energy to a dreary January! I haven’t done a trailer post in ages, but this one looks too good not to share.

I’m liking this punk rock take on Frankenstein’s monster and his betrothed, and the cast is killer!! It’s a reimagining of Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel, set in 1930s Chicago and done with a Bonnie and Clyde-esque spin on the story, focusing on the resurrected Bride (Jessie Buckley) and the Monster (Christian Bale) as they start a life of crime and romance. After The Lost Daughter, I was curious what Maggie Gyllenhaal would direct next, and this one looks like quite a departure from the smaller family drama.

Fresh out of the Golden Globe win (and hopefully more to follow), Buckley is currently my favorite actress. I miss seeing Bale on screen, so it’s so exciting to see this dynamic duo striking up a diabolical romance that leaves a heavy trail of blood in its wake. As a huge fan of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, I smiled with glee to see Rachel Dawes directing Batman here. It’s also a family affair for Maggie as she cast her husband, Peter Sarsgaard, and brother Jake Gyllenhaal in prominent roles. Annette Bening and Penélope Cruz round out the excellent cast.

I have been anticipating this movie for some time as it was previously scheduled for release last September and then pushed to October, 2025. Well, looks like it finally secured a final release date in the United States: March 6, 2026, in IMAX. Per Wikipedia, seems that part of the reason for the delay is the change of financing from Netflix to Warner Bros. Netflix pulled out of the project over disagreement on shooting in New York vs. New Jersey that Netflix preferred for its lower expenses.

Well, I’m glad that Maggie got to do the film the way she wanted, and I’m hopeful it’ll be a great gothic crime thriller that’ll look amazing on the big screen. If what Sarsgaard shared with THR is any indication, this looks like a banger of a movie!

The Bride is so ambitious because the script really is one of the best scripts. Look, my wife wrote it, so I’ll just go ahead and say that it’s the best script I’ve ever read. It really was satisfying on so many levels… Jessie is the most abstract, random, free-flowing, in-the-moment actor you could ever work with. She can also sing and dance, by the way — big time. There are big dance numbers and stuff in the movie.”

    1. Right on!! This cast is seriously SICK!! Happy to see Bale back in a prominent role again, I haven’t seen him in a while. Buckley has been on 🔥 lately, hoping to see her take the big trophy come Oscar night!

Interesting reviews as always. The Bride is an anticipated film that I am definitely eager to see. I recall seeing the trailer for this film a few months ago and being intrigued. The cast is the main selling point for me. Christian Bale is one of my favourite actors working today. He is a truly dedicated chameleon that always transforms into the characters he plays. I also adore Jessie Buckley and am rooting for her to win the Oscar this year for Hamnet. Seeing these two incredible actors team up for a comic-book film seems like a promising idea for a movie. It’s also interesting to see Maggie Gyllenhaal direct a film. So, I will definitely check this out when it hit theaters.

I saw the teaser of this one a while back and I don’t know what to make of it. But this new trailer looks much better. It could be one of worse films this year or one of the wildest rides, in any case, I’m in with the new take on Bonnie and Clyde story. Lol!

I just realized that I haven’t seen Bale in anything for a long time. I think the last film he starred in that I saw in theater was Hostiles and that was almost a decade ago! I know he’s been talking with Mann for a role in Heat 2, hopefully they can ink the deal. I’m assuming he’s taking over the Al Pacino’s role from the first film.

    1. I’m hopeful it’ll be a wild and crazy ride in the best sense! A Bonnie and Clyde gothic horror is a unique take on a Frankenstein story, I’m up for it with this cast!!

Man, HEAT 2 is shaping up to be so star-studded it’s insane!! I thought I heard during the Golden Globes than Stephen Graham is gonna play the younger version of DeNiro?? But man, I’d LOVE to see Bale as the younger version of Pacino’s character.

That’s the rumor about Graham being discussed to take over De Niro’s role but I don’t think that’s true. He’s not a brand name actor, I think he might being discuss to play the role of Tom Sizemore from the original film. I still think Mann will get a bigger name to play the younger De Niro’s role. But then again, that role wasn’t as prominent as the first film, De Niro’s character in Heat 2 only appeared in the first part of the story which took place in 1988 Chicago. Most of the story focuses on the aftermath of the events of the fist film which took place in 1995 and 2000. Pacino’s and Kilmer’s character were the main focus in the sequel. Which is why Leo and Bale would make sense to be the leads.

Also, Nic Cage apparently already signed to take over the role of Jon Voigt. So, yeah this sequel will be full of big named stars. Lol! But it make sense because Mann, Leo and Bale hasn’t has a successful film at the box office for a while. Leo has been in back to back box office bombs with Killers of Flower Moon and One Battle After Another. Those were pricey bombs and he needs a hit. Also, his Netflix film Don’t Look Up was dud. Lol.
