Catching up with Oscar-nominated Movies – Searches for ‘Everything Everywhere’ + ‘Banshees of Inisherin’ soar after noms announcement

The dust hasn’t quite settled on the Oscars nomination for pundits and cinephiles… I mean, I’m still reeling from the fact that my #1 film of 2022, The Woman King was grossly overlooked. Not even a nomination for Viola Davis which I thought would’ve been a shoo-in! In any case, you can read my gripes and delights about the noms here if you haven’t already.

Best Picture Nominees

  1. “All Quiet on the Western Front,” Malte Grunert, Producer
  2. “Avatar: The Way of Water,” James Cameron and Jon Landau, Producers
  3. “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Graham Broadbent, Pete Czernin and Martin McDonagh, Producers
  4. “Elvis,” Baz Luhrmann, Catherine Martin, Gail Berman, Patrick McCormick and Schuyler Weiss, Producers
  5. “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” Daniel Kwan, Daniel Scheinert and Jonathan Wang, Producers
  6. “The Fabelmans,” Kristie Macosko Krieger, Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner, Producers
  7. “Tár,” Todd Field, Alexandra Milchan and Scott Lambert, Producers
  8. “Top Gun: Maverick,” Tom Cruise, Christopher McQuarrie, David Ellison and Jerry Bruckheimer, Producers
  9. “Triangle of Sadness,” Erik Hemmendorff and Philippe Bober, Producers
  10. “Women Talking,” Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Frances McDormand, Producers

Out of the 10 movies nominated, I’ve actually seen 8 of them. not sure I’ll watch All Quiet on the Western Front as I can’t handle violent war movies, but I’m planning to finally catch Triangle of Sadness this weekend.

Per customary year after year, nominated films often get a boost following the announcement. I just read today that Everything Everywhere All at Once and Elvis are returning to theaters again weekend, even though Elvis is already available to stream in HBO. Avatar: The Way of Water has been doing gangbusters even without any nomination, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see more films returning to cinemas, and I do hope people check out smaller-budgeted movies like Women Talking and Tár as well as the bigger ones.

A lot of people are playing catch-up to nominated movies they haven’t seen yet, or want to see again. Per AskGamblers, Google search data reveals that searches for ‘stream Everything Everywhere All at Once’ exploded 667%, worldwide as of January 24th, after the Academy Award nominations were released, with that movie racking up eleven nominations including Best Picture, Best Director (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert), Actress in a Leading Role (Michelle Yeoh) and Best Original Screenplay – more than any other movie nominated. The data also reveals that searches for EEAAO have exploded 1,053%.

I definitely will be rooting for Michelle Yeoh as she absolutely deserves it!! It’s a travesty that this is her first-ever nomination, given she’s been churning terrific performances for 40+ years in the business.

Now, another nominated movie that got a big boost in online searches is The Banshees of Inisherin, which was nominated for nine Oscars! It saw an increase of 1,150% worldwide on Jan 24th. New insights by Slotbox reveal that this is not the first time the movie gets so much attention all at once, in fact searches for it exploded already 150% on January 11th right after the Irish movie won three out of eight Golden Globes nominations. Moreover, Colin Farrell also got deserved attention for his role, as he won the Golden Globe for “Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture”, which caused searches for ‘Colin Farrell movies’ to explode 1,150% and is now nominated for “Best Actor” at the Oscars as well.

I’m thrilled for Farrell whose career is just on fire right now! If people are looking for other Colin Farrell movies to watch, I highly recommend After Yang released in early 2022 which barely cracks $1 million in international box office gross, and domestically it made less than $50k (per Box Office Mojo). What a bummer as it’s such a good movie!

So are you planning to see an Oscar-nominated movie(s) this weekend? If so, which one(s)?

  1. I bought 2 tickets for Everything Everywhere All at Once for $14 overall for myself and my mother on Saturday as we’re going to see that as neither of us have seen it. I hope to catch up on the other nominees soon as I hope to have more streaming services next month.

  2. I wanted to watch Everything Everywhere All at Once but it won’t be available to rent on Vudu until November! I know it’s streaming on HBO Max, I think, but it’s not available in 4k and Dolby Atmos. I want to see it in the best quality as possible. I’ll have to see if it’s available to rent on iTunes.

I’m planning to watch Banshees of Inisherin this weekend. I put All Quiet on the Western Front on my to watch list. I’m getting a new place so I took down my home theater. I want to watch it on my big screen. Lol!
