New Trailer Spotlight – TOP GUN: Maverick

I feel the need…the need for speed!

Woo wee!! I needed something to get my mind off the fiasco that was Oscars 2022! This proved to be the kind of distraction I needed! Boy, can you believe it’s been 36 years since the first Top Gun came out? I was still a pre-teen at the time so I didn’t see the movie ’til years later. It’s the movie that made Tom Cruise a bonafide movie star. Well, he’s going to be 60 years old in July and STILL got that megawatt smile!

Full synopsis:

After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of TOPGUN graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.”

Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

The trailer looks great, and definitely has the elements to be seen on the big screen! Directed by Joseph Kosinski who made the visually ravishing, but not well-written Oblivion. I’m hoping that the overall story is more intriguing here as Christopher McQuarrie is one of the screenwriters and he’s revamped the Mission Impossible franchise. McQuarrie penned the script along with Ehren Kruger and Eric Warren Singer. The visuals and flying scenes look great as to be expected, and I saw Hans Zimmer is credited as one of the composers. I LOVE his score for DUNE (which he just won an Oscar for), so I’m sure the movie will sound awesome, too!

I was hoping to see Val Kilmer in the trailer (apart from just his photo on the wall) as he’s confirmed to join the sequel, but hey, I’m thrilled he’ll be in the movie!

Here are some interesting trivia from IMBb:

  • The World War II P-51 Mustang seen in this movie is actually Tom Cruise’s own airplane, him being an accomplished pilot in real life.
  • Tom Cruise’s involvement in this movie was predicated on the condition that real aircraft be used in the aerial sequences, not CGI.
  • Miles Teller was cast in the role of Goose’s son beating out the likes of Nicholas Hoult and Glen Powell. All three were flown to the home of Tom Cruise, the star of this movie, for chemistry tests. Powell was later cast in this movie in a role beefed up for him, having impressed Cruise, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, as well as executives at Paramount Pictures and Skydance with his auditions.

Full Cast: Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Charles Parnell, Bashir Salahuddin, Monica Barbaro, Jay Ellis, Danny Ramirez, Greg Tarzan Davis with Ed Harris

Can’t wait to see this in May 27!

  1. This looks like fun, hopefully it delivers. The film was supposed to open in the summer of 2019, but Kosinski and Cruise asked Paramount to delay it to summer 2020 (whoops!) so they would have more time to work on making the arial action sequences look as realistic as possible. Of course, no one knew Covid was going to shut down the world in 2020 and now it’s been 3 years since it’s supposed to come out in theaters.

    1. Wow I didn’t realize it’s been delayed since 2019!! But yeah, who would ever thought we’d be in a pandemic! But hey, hopefully those aerial action stuff would be even more awesome!

      1. I refuse to watch some aging egomaniacal midget trying to steal the spotlight from others and forcing studios to pay more money so he have a stupid submarine.

        1. I hear ya, Cruise is the quintessential movie star and he is demanding. But at the same time, he delivers for the studio, that’s why Paramount can’t say no to him. I think they need him as much as he needs the studio, if not more so.

          1. Yup, without the Mission: Impossible franchise, Paramount can’t compete in Hollywood right now. So, they’ll have to do whatever Cruise wants at the moment. I won’t be surprised if they get bought out by a bigger company like Apple or Google. I’m surprised that Google hasn’t jump into the movie making business yet.
