Heh, why is it only Wednesday It’s a pretty busy week at work and June is looking to be a hectic one, which is unusual for Summer. In any case, I’m also gonna be blogging a bit less as I’m REALLY trying to get my script done but the race the the finish is usually the toughest and I’m finding that w/ mine, especially the dialog of the final scene.
But hey, there’s always time for community links… so here we go!
I’ve missed a few of Dan Stephens‘ awesome top 10 lists… LOVE this one on Vengeful Vigilantes.
Nostra reviewed Midnight Special which I can’t wait to see once the blu-ray is out in a couple of weeks!
On the other hand, I think I’m gonna skip The Brothers Grimsby even though Dan O. didn’t hate it.
Brittani reviewed the French film Mustang. Given how much I LOVE the female-led Girlhood that’s also directed by a woman, I can’t wait to see this one!
Steven reviewed The Martian which made me want to see it again pronto!
Now, given her baby is due soon, we may not get to see many more of Film Fridays from Abbi, so check out her latest post that include reviews of Sing Street & Florence Foster Jenkins.
Now, we’ve got a cinematography and scene spotlight on two of my favorites. Keith posted great images from Inception, and Zoë posted the awesome club shootout scene from John Wick. Can’t wait for the sequel!
…
Now, speaking of a sequel I can’t wait to see…
It’s been a while since I’m actually excited for any sequel, but I’m a huge fan of Pacific Rim and I was so bummed that it’s been stuck in development hell for some time. For a while it seems it might not even get made at all for one reason or another. But looks like it will happen after all, wahoo!!! And what could be better than an awesome casting bit to go with it…
John Boyega, one of today’s rising stars out of Star Wars: Force Awakens has been cast as the son of Idris Elba’s Stacker Pentecost! What an absolutely brilliant casting!! I was literally in glee when I heard it and it just couldn’t be more perfect. Boyega and Elba are born & bred in London and they’re both super charismatic! I’d love to see him use his natural accent in Pacific Rim 2, as he used an American accent as Fin in the Force Awakens.
I have to say I’m even more excited to see Pacific Rim: Maelstrom than the Star Wars sequel. I have to say I’m still going to miss Idris in THIS getup [yowza!]…
… but I’m hoping he’d have a small part maybe in Flashback scenes? Man it’d be cool to see him & Boyega on screen together. But for sure I’m excited to see Boyega as a Jaeger pilot and keep on cancelin’ the apocalypse!
Guillermo del Toro isn’t directing this one though he’d still serve as producer. Steven S. DeKnight (who directed an episode of Netflix’s Daredevil as well as executive-produced the series) is helming this one. Per EW, del Toro said this:
“I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world.”
I love how diverse the cast of the first movie and so if Rinko Kikuchi is back again with Charlie Hunnam, I’ll be a happy camper!
While I found Pacific Rim to be flawed from a plotted standpoint, it was fun as hell, so I’m all in for this, and Boyega will fit in well with the universe, I think.
Hi Drew! Y’know for some reason I’m not as bothered w/ it. I actually found the plot holes in Force Awakens to be more annoying, but yes we agree Boyega will fit in nicely in the Pac Rim universe.
John Boyega in Pacific Rim 2 helmed by the guy who also did the Spartacus TV series (a very underrated series). Yeah, I’m in and thanks for the link-love. Thanks to the film, I’m now shaking my booty to disco just to annoy Matt Damon.
I haven’t seen ‘Spartacus’ but seems that this director has served as producers in a lot of great series and directed one episode of the excellent Netflix’s Daredevil, so I’m optimistic.
Ahah yeah, the disco music is fun and Damon’s comment about it is hilarious!
I’m a little up and down on my excitement level for PR2. I’m a fan of Steven S. DeKnight’s work and I’m glad to see him transition to feature films (that’s not Transformers). But honestly, I’m way more excited to see Boyega in the next Star Wars. 🙂
Glad to hear you like the director. Yeah I know a lot of ppl are more excited about Star Wars movie, but I’m not as crazy about that franchise as others do. Very cool to see Boyega getting another action franchise, though I’d like to see him do a drama as well.
Yes a drama would be nice as well. And I liked his comedic touch in Force Awakens.
I just think he’s a versatile actor but Hollywood often typecast actor after one successful movie. I hope he won’t get stuck in genre action movies.
You know I don’t remember much about Pacific Rim, dosed off a couple of times when I rented it a few years ago. So I assume Elba’s character didn’t make it in the first film? Let’s just say I probably will be skipping the sequel.
Awww, that’s too bad! I’m a Jaeger groupie, LOVE those giant robots and I’m not even into robot movies that much, plus I HATED the Transformers movies. But hey, I’m not ashamed to say I love Pacific Rim and rewatching it today made me love it even more. Idris Elba is phenomenal in this movie, his screen presence is amazing and he’s being utilized well in this film.
It’s one of those movies that I didn’t hate or love, just wasn’t that interesting. Visually it’s definitely stunning. I read that the 3D effects were pretty cool on the Bluray disc so I might give it a watch again, maybe I’ll enjoy it better with cool 3D on my big screen!
I have the 3D bluray if you want to borrow it. It’s one of the most visually-stunning movies I’ve ever seen, it looked glorious on IMAX at the zoo when I saw it a second time. The action scenes + the music is awesome, to me it’s a fun robot movie but Idris & Rinko’s unconventional father/daughter relationship somehow gave it an emotional touch.
Oh right, you told me you have the 3D bluray, yeah I’ll burrow it when my new projector arrives. Hopefully soon, still waiting for a replacement.
Let’s meet up soon Ted so I can lend you my Pac Rim BD. I think I was gonna borrow something from you too, but now I can’t remember, ahah.
I think you wanted to burrow True Detective season one. But yeah let’s meet for coffee soon.
Thanks so much for the inclusion Ruth. So appreciated. Lots of really good company too.
My pleasure!
Thanks for the link and I am looking forward to Pacific Rim 2 🙂
Glad to hear it Nostra!
After seeing Now You See Me 2, I am done with sequels for this moment!! Plus I haven’t seen the first and it doesn’t sound like something I’d like anyway =/
I skipped the press screening for Now You See Me 2 as I hated the first movie. But I LOVE Pacific Rim and will defend that movie vehemently 😀
Perhaps I should give Pacific Rim a shot then. I don’t know much about it to be honest
Yes you should! I mean, I’m not even a big monster/robot movie fan and I HATED the Transformers movies, but yet I LOVE Pac Rim. It’s funny and visually stunning, and I somehow have a soft spot for those Jaegers (the big robots operated by humans inside). Yes I know, it’s weird but I love them 🙂
P.S. Don’t forget about The Dark Valley! I’m about to post an article on it, it’s another movie I really like now, despite western not being my genre.
I’m going to have to read and feel your enthusiasm for Pacific Rim 2, Ruth. Just not too interested. Unless you rave it up. The only summer blockbuster that interests me right now is Star Trek.
I was surprised how much I really, really enjoyed Pacific Rim. I even rewatched it twice on the big screen. Idris Elba was superb, but I really love the visuals and action scenes, despite not normally a big fan of monster movies. I’m actually not that enthused about the new Star Trek movie.
I didn’t like Pacific Rim but if anyone could inject charisma into that franchise, it’s Boyega. I might watch it for him.
I keep forgetting Mustang was submitted by France and not Turkey lol. Thanks for the link! 🙂
Man I’m so bummed some people dislike Pacific Rim, but ah well, I guess we can’t agree on everything. There’s plenty of charisma the first movie, I mean Idris Elba was incredible even in his brief appearance, but even Charlie Hunnam whom I had never seen before was good, as was Rinko Kikuchi. Regardless of Boyega’s casting I’m already on board w/ the sequel, but it certainly is icing on the cake!
I’m curious what he sounds like in his natural accent too.
He sounds adorable in interviews, and being Stacker’s son he’d have to be English!
I’m not the biggest fan of Pacific Rim, but it wasn’t terrible, so I’m glad for Boyega and wouldn’t mind seeing the sequel.
Aiyaaah, another blogger not in love w/ Pacific Rim
I absolutely LOVE that movie and Idris is just sooooo good in the movie. Well I hope the sequel will be just as good but certainly this casting is a very good sign!
Hmm…not so sure about Pac. Rim 2. Cant say I was a fan of the first one, mostly because of the characters, but it was definitely very fun. So not so sure if replacing Del Toro will mean losing the fun element or gaining better characters.
I actually like the main characters, esp. Hunnam’s and Elba’s. Even the supporting cast like Ron Perlman was a hoot! I think since Del Toro’s still involved in producing I hope they keep the fun tone of the movie and that the visual spectacle is intact!
Thank you for the link love Ruth. Much appreciated.
I too am excited about the Pacific Rim 2 casting news. Boyega is a star already and a very talented actor.
Pleasure Dan! Glad to hear you’re excited for Pac Rim 2. Yes Boyega is definitely a star, I do hope he’ll get even more intriguing roles in the future.
Thanks for the shout out! I was surprised by how much I liked Pacific Rim. I am definitely looking forward to revisiting that universe.
You’re welcome! Yaaasss! Glad to hear you love Pac Rim too, I’m a bit obsessed w/ it at some point so this is terrific news indeed!
