2014 Recap: Top Five Favorite Movie Songs

Top5MovieSongs2014

Ok so I started making my Top 10 Films list, in fact I have my top 9 ready to go with just one more left to include. But y’know what, I realize I should wait until later this week as I have one press screening of a 2014 film on Tuesday.

Now this one is a much easier list to include, and four of the five have pretty much been decided long ago. The fifth one I’m including here is from an earlier 2014 movie I’ve just seen recently, Begin Again. In case you missed it, I’ve posted the Top 10 Favorite Film Scores list back in December, which surprisingly doesn’t have any overlap. What’s indeed surprising to me is that two of the songs here are sung by the lead actresses of their respective films, which means I should really update my five-year-old list of actors who are surprisingly good singers. As for I’m Not In Love, I’ve actually been a fan of that song (which was released in 1975) for some time, but I had to include it here as it’s my fave song from the awesome Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack. It might not be as catchy as Hooked on a Feeling but it doesn’t get old as quickly as that one.

So anyhoo, here’s my top 5:

Blackbird – Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Beyond the Lights)

Everything’s Awesome –Tegan and Sara with The Lonely Island (The Lego Movie)

Once Upon A Dream – Lana Del Rey (Maleficent)

I’m Not In Love – 10cc (Guardians of the Galaxy)

Like A Fool – Keira Knightley (Begin Again)

Honorable Mention:

Agony – Chris Pine & Billy Magnussen (Into The Woods)

I have to include this one as this scene is easily my favorite of the entire film! You can take a look at the hilarious clip here (it’s fuzzy as it’s recorded on the big screen) but I’m including the official song below because the quality is much better.

Thoughts on my picks here? So what’s YOUR favorite songs from the past year?

    1. Glad to hear you’re a fan of “I’m Not in Love” too! Oh I haven’t seen Frank yet but I figure there’ll be some great songs from that movie.

  1. Hey Ruth! Hope you had a great weekend. Some really good picks here. Me? I’m going with Batman’s death metal song from The Lego Movie! “No Parentssss”!!!!

      1. It’s really not a serious choice I suppose, but I’m constantly muttering it to myself (usually followed by a laugh). So maybe it applies!

    1. Hello Caz, always glad to see you stop by. I love the original Once Upon a Dream but this rendition is definitely perfect for Maleficent!

      1. It totally is, I must stop by more often 🙂 thats one of my new year resolutions 😉 haha. To make sure I read more of my fellow bloggers posts!

    1. Hello Chris! The soundtrack is great but this is just the songs that I’m covering on this list 🙂 Which song is your fave from Guardians of the Galaxy btw?

And yes, I’m thrilled you love the Blackbird song too!

      1. I know you are just covering songs here 🙂

I posted my top 10 soundtracks of 2014 today. Re. Guardians of the Galaxy, I don’t have a clear favorite, I love Spirit In The Sky, I’m Not in Love, I Want You Back, & Hooked On A Feeling.

        1. Oh Spirit in the Sky is a great one and of course Hooked on a Feeling did get stuck in my head for a time. Glad you like ‘I’m Not In Love’ too. Seems that I have a penchant for British musicians as well as actors 😉

    1. I actually heard him sing on Jimmy Kimmel and he almost sound as good as Sinatra! 😉 This part of the movie is hilarious, it was ROTFL moment.

  2. Nice picks. The Lego song just had to be in there…

My favorite of the past year (since the movie wasn’t released here until 2014) was in Her when Scarlett Johansson sings a song towards the end of the film.

    1. Hi Nostra. Oh I LOVE that song in Her, that’d make my top 5 of 2013 as it was released last year here. I was really hoping Joaquin and Scarlett got nominated for Oscar.

    1. Woo hoo! Glad to hear Drew. I really like the sweet friendship between Knightley and Corden, and this song is lovely and heart-wrenching. I’m not a fan of Levine but he’s quite tolerable in this movie.

  3. Ted S.

I only one movie from your list, Guardians of the Galaxy and unfortunately I was not a fan of the music from the movie. I enjoyed the film but I don’t think I’ll be watching it again anytime soon.

I think the only music from movie that I really like was Son Lux’s No Fate Awaits Me from The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby. I have yet to see the movie though. But I really like Son Lux’s work and glad to see they’re getting some notice with their work being featured in a movie.

    1. You’re not a fan of the music of Guardians of Galaxy? I’m surprised to hear that. I love ’em as some of them were my faves even before they’re featured in the movie.

Ooooh I LOVE that song from Eleanor Rigby! Thanks for sending me the youtube link. That could easily make my top 5 if somehow I had remembered it. I really like that movie, but I’d imagine it’s not your cup of tea.

      1. Ted S.

I’m not a big fan of 80s music, too cheesy for me. Haha!

I plan to see The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, I prefer this kind of drama/romance as oppose to some of them out there. From the trailer it looked more darker then most I guess.

BTW, since I signed up with WordPress, my username is now tsayda3700. It’s weird that I can’t use my Ted S. anymore.

  4. Sadly I’ve only seen Guardians but I can’t argue with any of those pics. I really like Tegan & Sara and Lana Del Rey’s solo stuff. Here’s two I’d add to the list.

I liked Jennifer Lawrence’s rendition of The Hanging Tree (penned by The Lumineers) from The Hunger Games. She was so embarrassed to sing it that she suggested Lorde sing and she’d lip sync it. I think it turned out just fine. Here’s a cool video someone made to the song.

Jake Bugg, a teenager who sounds the second coming of Dylan, from The Fault In Our Stars with “Simple As This”.

  5. Awesome list, Ruth! I think my list would be very similar to yours, with at least three of my selections coming from movies you included (Begin Again, The Lego Movie, and Guardians of the Galaxy). I love that you included Like a Fool on here – definitely one of the best songs from the soundtrack, and it is such a good soundtrack, I think!

    1. Hey Kris, glad to hear! I listened to some of the songs in Begin Again soundtrack but Like A Fool is still my fave and it’s quite an emotional rendition from Keira.

  6. Nice picks Ruth. My five favorites are “Lost Stars” from Begin Again, “I Love You All” from Frank, “Boom Clap” from The Fault in Our Stars, “Palo Alto” from Palo Alto, and “Everything is Awesome” from The LEGO Movie. Though, “Masterpiece” from Beyond the Lights is really close to breaking into my top five.

    1. I should take a listen to Frank’s soundtrack, I’d imagine there are some fun songs in there. I can’t believe I don’t remember which one is ‘Masterpiece’ from Beyond the Lights, I have to search for that now.

  7. Loved Lana’s take on the Sleeping Beauty theme. My favorite movie songs this year were “Yellow Flicker Beat” (Lorde) from Mockingjay Part 1, Lost Stars (Adam Levine) from Begin Again and Bomfaleralla (Afasi & Filthy) from The Fault in our Stars.

    1. Hey Fernando! Lost Stars is a pretty darn good one from Begin Again, I’m just not fond of Levine. I forgot to mention The Hanging Tree from Mockingjay, sung by Jen Lawrence which I thought was quite good.

  8. Jess

I just saw Into the Woods and completely agree about “Agony”! It was so hilarious. Also, can’t argue with “Everything is Awesome” or anything from the brilliant Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack.
