April Movie Watching Recap and Movie of the Month

AprilRecap

Boy, four months of 2013 have come and gone. But as you can see from my banner photo, Winter is still not through with us yet. Yep, we actually still have snow/slush on May 1st 😦

But enough with the weather. April was actually been a pretty good movie viewing month for me, thanks to Mspfest! Though I didn’t get to see all of the films I set out to see (thanks thundersnow!!) such as Mud, The East and Trance, I still got to see eight of them and most of them are excellent!

Now blogging-wise, it’s quite an exciting month as I was nominated for three LAMMYs!

I was floored that I was in the running for the Big Kahuna, a.k.a. Best Blog, so THANK YOU to everyone who thought of me and my wee blog. I was thrilled to see the Small Roles, Big Performances was nominated as well, that award belongs to EVERYONE who participated! The most rewarding one for me is the Best Community Builder nomination, as to me, one of the greatest aspects of blogging is being part of a film community who shares my passion for movies. Thanks again everyone, this is the time where I’ll say, I’m so honored to be nominated! 😀

Now, here are some of the posts you might’ve missed from this past month:

Not a lot of re-watches this week, I only rewatched Gladiator and parts of Superman: The Movie as part of my Man of Steel countdown. I did see a few episodes of Doctor Who, I quite like David Tennant who’s undoubtedly the most popular Doctor. I enjoyed the show, it’s amusing but no I didn’t become obsessed with it like a lot of people do. I’m mainly waiting until the season finale with Timothy Dalton, ahah.

Well, overall I didn’t see as many films as I would’ve liked, in fact I only rented a single movie the entire month. But hey, I did get to see more independent films in the last three weeks than I usually do in months, so that’s always a great thing! I actually still have a few screener dvds of independent films I have yet to watch but hopefully will get to in the next few weeks.

Movie of the Month:

MovieOftheMonth_TheHunt

I’ve done writing my review of this one, and after letting it sit for a couple of days, this is definitely the film I’m most impressed with in April and will surely end up in my Best list of the year. It’s not necessarily a ‘favorite’ movie that I’d love to see repeatedly, but it’s certainly one I’d highly recommend.

Well, that’s my monthly recap folks. What’s YOUR favorite film you saw in April?

  1. Some really intriguing flicks on your watch list. Of course as you know The Hunt is one I’m really wanting to see!

My favorite movie of April? Well “Mud” edges out “To the Wonder”!

    1. I’d be so disappointed if you didn’t list Mud as your fave of the month, ahah. I was going to list a couple of movies as movies of the month, but The Hunt is just a notch above the rest I think. Review coming this weekend 😀

      1. Awesome! I look forward to reading it. Although it will be from the comfort of my seats at the Texas Rangers baseball game! Taking a father and son weekend trip. Leaving tomorrow and can’t wait. 🙂

          1. Eeeeck! It’s usually warm and in the 80s when we go. It may be a little cool this year though. Can’t wait though. Love spending these boys weekends out with my little buddy!

  2. Quite the list you’ve seen this month Ruth! And again a huge congrats on your LAMMY noms, hugely deserved! I think We Need to Talk About Kevin is my favourite film I saw this month although I saw Headhunters too and that was pretty good.

    1. Thanks Chris!! Hey you got the same amount of noms right? I know I have zero chance of winning but then again I wasn’t expecting to be nominated 😀 Headhunter was impressive wasn’t it? Seems like the Danes sure knows how to make great thrillers!

  3. Ted S.

The only new movie I saw in April was Oblivion and I don’t think it’s that great, I think I rewatched a few films but couldn’t remember which one. Hopefully the summer season flicks will churn out a few good ones.

    1. Well I’m quite happy that a lot of the indie films I saw were very good. No need to wait until Summer to see good movies Ted, you just have to look for ’em 😉

    1. Oh cool! I forgot that it’s been released for some time in Europe and elsewhere. Hope you enjoy it Andrew, for sure Mads’ performance should not disappoint!

  4. hahaha you’re not obsess like me about Doctor Who 😉

You watched a lot last month. I like that you watched both blocbuster and indi. Talking about blockbuster, did you know that I haven’t seen ANY 2013 movies yet.

    1. He..he.. well I have other things I’m obsessing about Nov. I like Tennant but the show is kinda silly overall, but still entertaining.

I figure you’ve been so busy watching TV shows that’s why you haven’t seen any 2013 movies yet 😉

      1. I agree that the show is not one that all people will like…I like it a lot because the writer has to be a genius to write that time and paradox story….plus I never really into tvseries with a lot of drama in it.

Yup, TVseries and foreign movies are the reason 😉

        1. Oh I think it’s fun, I get why people love it. I’m more inclined to check out Tennant’s detective series Broadchurch though, that looks good but it’s not available on Netflix yet. Have you watched ’em yet Nov?

  5. I haven’t really seen anything new in last month, but I’m planning on seeing The Hunt soon, so it’s great that you liked it!

    1. I figured that, but hey you’ve got GoT and Richard’s shows to keep you company right? 😉 The Hunt is excellent, I think you’d like that one Sati.

      1. Well this week it was not so much GoT and Armitage madness as sitting in the library and praying for quick death 😛 But I finally have some free time to catch up now 😛

        1. Hey, all your hard work will pay off Sati!! Those shows will always be around waiting for you 😀 No, don’t die, what would we be without your epic link posts and visual parallels??

  6. Solid month of films, Ruth. You saw a few that I’m anxious to see myself. My favorite film I saw in April is Chungking Express, but my favorite 2013 movie I saw is To the Wonder.

    1. I’m just about to check out your monthly recap Josh. I really need to see Chungking Express, esp w/ Tony Leung in it. I probably won’t get to To The Wonder until dvd though.

  7. Congratulations on all the well-deserved Lammy noms, Ruth! Looks like you had a great April! If only that pesky snow would stop, right? The best movie I watched in April was Martin Scorsese’s The King of Comedy, followed closely by Iron Man 3 and Anna Karenina. Watched all 3 last weekend, so it was definitely a good one!

  8. Congrats on the LAMMY nominations, and good luck for the awards! Glad you enjoyed the film festival, despite the weather.
My favorite this month was a tie between Buster Keaton silent Sherlock Jr (1924), and The Place Beyond the Pines.

    1. Yeah, I’d have enjoyed it more if I didn’t have to deal with the snow! We barely escaped another big one, but 30 miles south of me got about a foot of snow last night! 😦

That’s an interesting duo of favorites Chris, both of which I still need to see!

  9. Congratulations on three Lammy nominations!

In other news I have been really coming around to The Living Daylights recently, I mean I always liked it but after having watched it three times in the last month and a half I’m rating it really highly amongst the other Bond films!

    1. Thank you James!!

Oooh I’m sooo happy to hear your comment on TLD!! You saw it three times in a month, I’m jealous! It certainly remains as one of the best Bond films, and of course Dalton is still my fave 007 😀

      1. I don’t know, I think I need to rearrange my ranked order of Bonds. I really like Dalton but he always came in at fourth place for me – I hate putting him down so low though as I think he is excellent in the role!

  10. Looks like you’re having a good time with the film festival. Curious about The Hunt, I hope I can see it sometime this year.

Best movie I saw on April was Funny Games, The Sapphires & Heathers (all same score).

Congrats on your LAMMY nominations, I voted several of them too!

  11. Great movie month Ruth and based on your review I watched Secret of Kells this week, really nice film!

I watched 26 movies in April, my favorite was the documentary Bus 174, another one was the anime The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.

    1. Hi Nostra! Glad you enjoyed Secret of Kells, the animation is sooo beautiful but there’s also a compelling story.

Hey, not bad to have seen 26 films, that’s cool. I’m curious about Bus 174, I’ll look that up. Thanks!

  12. It’s rare that cinema makes epics, such as Lawrence of Arabia, The Lord of the Rings, Ben-Hur, and Gone With the Wind. Lawrence of Arabia matches the entertainment, the danger, the heroism, and overall inspiration of those films listed above. Peter O’Toole gives one of cinema’s greatest performances as T.E. Lawrence, and does a magnificent job — and a great casting job as well. Omar Shariff and Alec Guiness are superb in their roles and equal to legendary status. David Lean has done a wonderful job at directing Lawrence of Arabia, and the writing is great as well. There’s really no flaws one can point out, not even the running time, because in my eyes, in order for a film to be an epic, it must be long! Look at those films listed above, all are 3 hours or more and are considered to be the greatest of all time. I love them, and I love epics, and Lawrence of Arabia is the most modern of them, so in a way, this is the modern epic. Overall, Lawrence of Arabia isn’t my favorite film of all time, but one cannot deny the story, the characters, and the overall triumph it portrays. For anyone who loves epics such as me, or terrific films nonetheless, then this is the film for you. Rent and buy.

  13. A nice mixture of films in your monthly recap. I’m most intrigued about The Hunt since it’s been on my to-watch list for quite a while now, especially since Mikkelsen plays the lead and he’s been doing such a good job with Hannibal on TV (my favorite new show).
I also gave Disconnect a watch and it’s part of my summary of the month too. I’d be interested to know what your thoughts are on it.
I also have Caesar Must Die in my radar and I may give it a watch soon too.
    Nice work in April.

  14. ilovethatfilm

Yay for The Hunt. It was my second favourite film of 2012! A hard watch but definitely brilliant!
