Conspicuous Trailer of the Week: Wish You Were Here

I first caught the still photo from this film at the I Luv Cinema site and it reminded me of a market setting of my homeland Indonesia. Since this is an Australian production, it’s very much possible. Turns out the film is set in Cambodia.

Check out the trailer:

Here’s the plot:

Four friends lose themselves in a carefree South-East Asian holiday. Only three come back. Dave and Alice return home to their young family desperate for answers about Jeremy’s mysterious disappearance. When Alice’s sister Steph returns not long after, a nasty secret is revealed about the night her boyfriend went missing. But it is only the first of many. Who amongst them knows what happened on that fateful night when they were dancing under a full moon in Cambodia?

I must say the trailer looks pretty gripping and I like the fact that they don’t give too much away. Mysterious trailers are really the way to go, especially in a thriller like this. It kind of reminds me of Brokedown Palace a bit that was set in Thailand, which also dealt with drug smuggling. But of course this one might have its own twist.

The only actor I’m familiar with here is Joel Edgerton and I actually have not seen anything he’s in, apart from the Animal Kingdom and Warrior trailer. I’m hoping to see both of those soon, and the 37-year-old Aussie looks pretty compelling in both. I know this is probably a silly comparison but he strikes me as a cross between Guy Pearce and Russell Crowe, not so much in looks but in the way he acts. He’s got a quiet grace about him, that still intensity, that I find appealing. I’m looking forward to seeing him as Tom Buchanan in the adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby due out next year.

Anyway, I probably won’t catch this on the big screen as small indies like this might not even make it to my neck of the woods, but definitely a rental.

What do you think folks? Any interest in this one?

  1. You should check out Animal Kingdom asap Ruth. It’s amazing. I’m not sure about this, the problem with mysterious trailer like this is that they might not give away enough to draw people in. It kind of looks like your average whodunit movie although I hope there is a lot more twist and turn to it than that.

    1. Will do, Castor, Guy Pearce is in that one too isn’t it?

As for this trailer, I think they gave away just enough for us to know what to expect. I like the fact that it gave less things away than most trailers these days. It remains to be seen if the actors’ charisma can hold people’s interest, but because of Warrior I think more people have heard of Joel by now.

  2. Hi, Ruth and company:

    Intriguing looking trailer!

Is anyone else getting a creepy vibe from the Caribbean vacation thriller ‘Turistas’ from a few years back?

Interested in what direction Joel Edgerton goes in this film.

  3. Hi Ruth, I hope you are well.

I’m so glad you are focusing on a film trailer other than The Five Year Engagement which I see plastered everywhere. A film of which put me to sleep simply by reading its title! 🙂

…yes, I’m tired of all these wedding-based movies. I’ve attended my own wedding, I’ve attended four other weddings and two stag parties in the last 12 months. I’m done with weddings for a while! 🙂

Wish You Were Here looks very interesting. Shame its title is exactly the same as a rubbish British holiday TV show from the 1980s.

    1. Hi Dan, I’m well, thanks. Hope you are too!

Not sure which one that Five Year Engagement is, it reminds me of a French film A Very Long Engagement but that’s a totally different movie isn’t it?

I don’t have any feelings one way or the other about wedding-themed movies but I haven’t seen a REALLY good one that I can remember. Well maybe Four Weddings in a Funeral, I like that one.

Ha…ha.. good thing I’ve never heard of that British TV show.

  4. Hold on, you haven’t seen Animal Kingdom or Warrior???

Hmmm Come on they are both excellent films. I am just pulling your chain. But seriously… GET THEM WATCHED.

Yeah I saw this trailer the other day and thought it was ace. Didn’t expect the way it turns out and I bet it is going to be a good dark thriller.

    1. I know matey, I definitely WILL watch those two. I’m so behind w/ movie watching, such a shame really.

Glad you like this trailer, I hope the movie itself is good!

  5. I seem to have skipped this post. I too felt familiar with the market background. I want to see the trailer but it load so long in my computer. But I like Joel Edgerton in Warrior. It seems worth to check out, Ruth

    1. Ha..ha.. I knew you’d feel the same way, mirip pasar di Jakarta yah? 🙂

Joel seemed like he has a good screen presence like most other Aussie actors.
