Oh lookie here! Cool new X-Men First Class pics and teaser poster

Oooh, my inner fangirl has been so spoiled lately! Forget Spider-man and Captain America, the superhero movie I’m hugely anticipating this year is X-Men: First Class prequel, especially the Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy casting.

You’ve probably seen this banner with all the cast in their mutant suit. As much as I’m excited to see anything from the upcoming flick, I thought the image looks like a bad Photoshop job (that turns out to be a fan-created so that explains the dismal quality). But yesterday, a few additional photos were released that look a heck of a lot better and more realistic. I mean, these people look like they were actually being photographed together. I’m digging the retro 60s look, and I think the cast is great. I just realize Rose Byrne is in this one, I like her. And Jennifer Lawrence has been generating lots of buzz with her performance in Winters’ Bone. I’m also looking forward to seeing the talented young Brit Nicholas Hoult (the one with the glasses) as the young Hank McCoy (Beast).

X-Men: First Class Cast

To see the whole cast list, check out its IMDb page

James McAvoy as Xavier and Michael Fassbender as Magneto

As for the teaser poster, they pretty much went with the ‘X’ emblem route that have been used for the previous X-Men flicks (this one for X:3 with Wolverine’s claws is my favorite). The only difference is this one looks a little more retro with the serif font. If you don’t know anything about this film and what ‘school for the gifted’ means, it almost look like a poster for a Roman swords & sandals film as the whole thing kinda looks like a bronze shield.

I wish they’d just release the trailer already, I mean this movie is supposed to be released June 3rd, you’d think they’ve got at least a teaser trailer of some sort. Just as a comparison, Green Lantern is released two weeks later than this one but we’ve already seen its trailer like a month ago. Well, all we got so far is this trailer description that The Daily Blam released earlier this month. Here are some of the highlights:

● Patrick Stewart and Ian Mckellan voice over the opening lines about destiny and which side will you stand for as scenes of each in their previous X-Men movie roles flash until the entire screen flashes from white to black.
● A very young Xavier and Erik meet for the first time, followed by a different angle of the scene from the opening of X-Men in the concentration camp.
● Scene transitions to Erik yelling dramatically as metal tables in the room begin to float around him. Xavier and Mags shake hands with a tall man in a lab coat introduced as Dr. McCoy.
● The words “The other was too far gone” flash as a very pissed off Erik storms through a hallway killing guards as he passes them.

And for more First Class goodies, MSN also got an interview with Michael Fassbender where he discussed his role as Erik Lehnsherr (a.k.a Magneto). You can read it here. I absolutely can’t wait for this movie, though I kinda feel bad for director Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, Layer Cake) who seemed really stressed out based on this Hero Complex article. Looks like this is the first time he’s got to work against an extremely tight deadline, whilst he’s used to working on small films that might not even find a distributor! I hope that the studios cut him some slack, I mean, I’d rather wait a few more months if need be than seeing this suffer from a rushed production.

What say you, folks? Are you as excited about this movie as I am?

  1. I’m not too familiar with the whole cast, but Nicholas has really impressed me in the british show SKins. While i know you have a fondness for Brits, i don’t think you would like the show much(There’s a lot of sex & swearing).

I am really hoping this will be good. And i’m with you with giving Matthew more time if he needs it. I would rather wait for a wuality film than get another disappointment like X3

    1. Yeah I’ve heard about that show and you’re absolutely right, not my cup of tea. Well no matter what, Vaughn can’t possibly suck more than Ratner so at least I can rest easy in that regard. And yeah, James is a consistent actor and fortunately he’s good, as consistent doesn’t mean a good thing if you’re bad 🙂

  2. They had me at Fassbender and McAvoy. Even if the movie turns out to be the worst movie ever (doubt it), it’d still be worth it to see those two in a film together. I’m so easily pleased.

    1. Ahah, I’m easily pleased too I guess as I share your sentiment. Glad you’re as optimistic as I am about how this movie will turn out.

  3. I liked the Michael Fassbender, and James McAvoy casting. That was before they cast 30 more people and turn this into Twilight 5. I have no doubt this is going to be a teen-fest.

    1. yes, I’m totally with Castor on this one.
And plus I’ve never liked the 60’s and the 70’s so I won’t like that style … people didn’t look good in that fashion 🙂 And plus I’m not amazed by the choice of January Jones for the White Queen.

    2. Oh no, no, no… it WON’T be anywhere Twilight, come on Castor, how could you even mention it in the same breath! 😦 I mean just judging from the Fassbender MSN interview (not sure if you’ve read that yet), the story definitely has substance.

@ Dezzy, having not seen Mad Men, I have no feelings about January Jones’ casting. Yeah, I’m not crazy about fashion from that era either, but it doesn’t really affect my feelings about this flick.

  4. Man, I’m still so skeptical about this. Seems like the X-Men version of The Avengers or something, really just looking forward to Aronofsky and Wolverine to be honest. I can see this crashing and burning even with such an awesome cast.

    1. I hear ya about the Avengers comparison (the mutant version as opposed to the superhero lot), but I think the main focus is the dynamic between Xavier and Magneto, and the pics that have been released seem to support that. In that regard I’m very hopeful.

  5. I really, really, really hope FIRST CLASS comes out okay, but from everything I read (Vaughn’s comments, still in the midst of shooting) and seen (specifically the ridiculously ugly Magneto shot), I’m thinkin’ WOLVERINE might actually not be that bad of a movie compared to this.

Here’s hoping it won’t become a mess, but the optimism isn’t exactly high. But yes: bring us the trailer already!

    1. Which one are you referring to about Magneto?? Do you have the link? I haven’t heard much about Wolverine other than Aronofsky directing so I can’t really comment on it.

I sure hope the trailer squash everyone’s doubts that this’ll be good. Man, I have so much faith on this flick they should hire me as a spokesperson 😀

        1. You mean USE me as THEIR agents? Yes, absolutely! I’d even do it for a fraction of whatever they’re paying theirs and they’ll get double the enthusiasm, he..he..

            1. He..he.. well I think their careers are doing just fine without me apparently, though Rufus’ agent certainly needs to find his clients a lot better projects! So Mr Sewell, if you’re reading this, I’m for hire 😀

              1. PrairieGirl

You’re right Ruth, I’m busted, I confess, I didn’t read this post. Glad you pointed me to it. Boy, how I would LOVE for Rufus’ career to go through the ROOF with you!

                1. I know you don’t like superhero flicks but you might want to make an exception with Fassbender and McAvoy 😉

As for Rufus, I think he should blame his agent for being ‘underutilized’ as we all know his acting skills isn’t the problem.

      1. Apologies, when I said WOLVERINE I was meaning the embarrassing Gavin Hood-directed X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE.

The Magneto pic I’m referring to is this one: http://www.beyondhollywood.com/x-men-first-class-2011-movie-preview-images-and-videos/x-men-first-class-fassbender/

From this photo, it just looks unbelievably cheesy, like a reject from Roger Corman’s FANTASTIC FOUR (1994), but I guess with the right cinematography nearly anything can look pretty neat-o.

        1. Oh geez Andy, surely this will be a heck of a lot better than that one!

Thanks for the link, I haven’t seen that one. Hmm, I don’t think it’s that cheesy, though I’m not digging the helmet, but I think like you said, it might come out a lot different in the movie. Please stop with the comparison… Fantastic Four is not even in the same league even on the casting front. I mean, that one’s got Jessica Alba for crying out loud.

  6. Ted S.

I read they’re doing more reshoots, while Vaughn is in the editing room. That doesn’t sound good but I have a lot of trust in Vaughn so I’ll just till I see the film before I make any judgement.

    1. Yeah, I am worried that the studio is putting too much pressure on him to finish this thing but I hope Vaughn can turn it around nonetheless. Glad you’re as optimistic as I am Ted 🙂

  7. Darren

I’m actually – against my better judgment – starting to look forward to this. It’s an amazing cast and a fantastic director. I’m actually just a little disappointed with how Fox is handling the PR. You imagine they would have teased things like the cast ensemble photo, maybe revealing one character at a time, but they just kinda threw everything out there at the same time.

    1. I think you’ve got good reason to anticipate this, Darren. If this turns out bad, I blame the studio for rushing to get it done!

Btw, I heard yesterday that Vaughn was upset over that banner photo (the bad Photoshop job I was referring to) as it wasn’t official or something like that. It didn’t think it was a professional photo and I agree that they should reveal one character at a time.

  8. I really dont understand the anti-…. uh… anti-ness about this movie. its in good hands and has some great actors in it, its gonna be good. its not as if the first three x-men movies were masterpieces. 1 and 2 are solid, the latter is wildly overrated. the period setting is gonna suit this down to the ground i think. had to skip over your script spoiler there ruth – why does the fecking internet have to ruin everything?

    1. Wahoo! Finally someone with enthusiasm, atta boy, Ross!

Btw, what I posted there wasn’t the script dear, it’s a TRAILER description, so it’s only describing what you’ll see in the trailer when that thing rolls around, nothing spoiler-y.

I didn’t know you’re a super fan of McAvoy & Fassbender… it almost makes up for your aversion for my GB… almost, but not quite 😀 Cillian Murphy cameo would be brilliant, I’m sure Novia from http://bokunosekai.wordpress.com would be thrilled!

  9. seriously, on further reflection i reckon id even watch a two-hour movie where james mcavoy and michael fassbender play chess! the only thing this film is lacking is cillian murphy.
so im looking forward to his cameo

    1. What do you mean ‘too far for the franchise?’ I’m more on the optimistic side because of the cast. Plus, like Ross said, just the pic of Fassbender & McAvoy playing chess is enough to get me to the theater 😀
