I’ve played Minecraft once in my life (Boomer vibes?), but I’ve watched my kids play it over the years; it is integral to their childhood – much like Atari was to mine. But I do see the beauty in it and how it fostered creativity in many a kid of the past couple of decades. In a way, Minecraft parked itself into their DNA and probably mine. Even I know what a Creeper is ☺. It was only a matter of time before the powers that be would turn this moneymaking behemoth into a live-action vehicle to… make more money.

They have the right idea of casting Jack Black as the titular Steve, though I had imagined him to look different (perhaps with a square head, etc.) Given all the CGI action expected of this film (which it has an adequate amount of), Jack Black provides an additional jolt of energy like a couple of Red Bulls. Jason Momoa is pretty cheesy as Garret “The Garbageman,” and the rest of the cast play the typical sidekicks in typical fashion. Perhaps the most enjoyable section is the intro where we see the origin of Steve, which is quite fun.

As for a plot, there really isn’t one besides the idea of somehow being transported to a realm where you build, craft, and mine to your heart’s content. Add a couple of orphans, a real estate agent, and a loser owner of a retro video game store, and you have A Minecraft Movie.
But that doesn’t mean it ain’t entertaining. I brought my two teenagers to the screening, and it was mostly smiles at the light jokes, cute sheep, cameos from famous YouTubers, and numerous in-jokes/easter eggs that flew over my head. I found myself pleasantly losing track of time and grateful for a Sunday outing with my two boys.

Jack Black is pretty funny even when the material gets tedious. A Minecraft Movie is mostly forgettable, but admittedly, an entertaining time nonetheless. It will probably be a box office hit because every kid will see this. And to all the parents of young kids in the universe, surrender and just try to enjoy it. You’ll have Jack Black to thank for that.

So have you seen A MINECRAFT MOVIE? Well, what do you think?
…
I have never played Minecraft in my life. The last real video console I had was the Sega Genesis back in the 1990s but that was it. I do have some games in my laptop but I only play the daily games. I have no interest in this. Plus, with the exception of Nacho Libre, I don’t like anything by Jared Hess.
I do love Napoleon Dynamite haha!
I never did and I never will.
My son and his friends went to this together, which is great for me because I don’t think I would’ve enjoyed it. They had a great time though.
Same — my 15 year went back to see it with a couple of friends. He says it’s not that great but a worthy excuse to hang.
I never played this game. I used to game a lot, but they started dumbing them down and I got meh.
Well, I like Jack Black.
Jason Momoa was cool until he played Aquaman. (A pink jacket? Really?)
So, there could be some entertainment value for me there, but it sounds stupid, and I don’t have kids so if I see it, it will be by accident.
Thanks for warning…. erm… review!
“Chicken Jockey!!!!”🤪🤷🏽 Jack Black surprised a theater full of kids the other day. He walked in right before showtime and started dancing around. Their reactions were priceless. I’d watch this just for him. Never played the game though.
