Oscars 2024 – Full Winners list + highlights from the 96th Academy Awards

Oscars-highlights-24

Happy Post-Oscars Day, everyone!! Did you watch the ceremony last night? Just like last year, the Oscars happened during the end of daylight savings when we actually lost one hour 😦 Thankfully they started the ceremony an hour early and relatively speaking it went by pretty fast and was pretty entertaining overall.

Now, Jimmy Kimmel hosted the Oscars once again, his fourth time doing his gig, and though he’s nowhere near the funniest nor the most charismatic guy to do these things, all things considered, he did a decent job and made me laugh a couple of times. People who are into daddy jokes would likely laugh at the ‘two Yorgos’ joke which I have to admit made me chuckle a bit. The bit about the SAG strike agreement where actors can go back to worrying about being replaced by younger and more attractive people instead of AI is hilarious and spot on!

As expected throughout the award season, OPPENHEIMER won Best Picture. It took home seven Oscars after being nominated in 13 categories.

And here are the Oscars acting winners of 2024… I’m pretty happy with this year’s choices!

Oscars2024-acting-winners

Unlike last year where ALL the acting winners were from A24 movies, they spread the love a bit, though Downey + Cillian were both from Oppenheimer.

Anyhoo, I made my predictions at the last minute of who will win and who SHOULD win, here are my predictions ballot. I actually tried to predict ALL of the nominations this year despite not having seen them all. I got 20 right out of 23 categories, not bad!!

Thoughts + Takeaways

2023 was a tough year in Hollywood marked with dueling strikes so it’s nice to see camaraderie and solidarity displayed at the Oscars. Kimmel invited a below-the-line crew to the stage after addressing the current IATSE contract negotiation which possibly led to another strike – “…before we celebrate ourselves, let’s have a very well-deserved round of applause for the people who work behind the scenes: the teamsters, the truck drivers, sound engineers, gaffers, grips, all of the crew.” Love this!

This year’s ceremony brought back past acting winners to introduce the acting nominees from all four categories. Now, as much as I love seeing those past winners on stage together, like the five women presenting the Best Actress Oscars, I miss seeing the clips of each nominated performance. Perhaps next year they can show the clips as the presenter is talking?

This year’s Oscars has been mostly predictable, the entire night was pretty suspense-free, that is until the Best Actress category. Just look at Emma Stone‘s flabbergasted reaction…

I for one am ecstatic over Emma’s win… I was in awe of her fearless performance in Poor Things, and she also wore many hats in the production as a producer.

Now, I see many people on Twitter are upset that Stone won instead of Lily Gladstone, which is understandable, nothing wrong with being passionate about someone/something. But to actually be vindictive, spiteful, and saying nasty things about the winning actress is so juvenile and downright sad. As a woman, I think the media and people on social media like to pit women against each other, when in reality I think the actresses are supportive of one another.

First-time talents/filmmakers triumphing over veterans give all of us aspiring creatives hope and inspiration! I love how Cord Jefferson championed independent/smaller-budget productions during his speech for winning Best Adapted Screenplay for American Fiction.

Now, I’m not advocating for the Best Animal Acting category but love that animal performers were also invited to the Oscars. Last year we got Jenny the Goat from The Banshees of Inisherin and this year there’s Messi from Anatomy of a Fall!

The Not-So-Good Moment…

The In Memoriam segment is always hard to get right it seems. While it started with the gut-punching clip honoring Alexei Navalny, there is just overdone with too much going on. There are live music/singing + dance performances on top of the clips of those who have passed away in the past year. No offense to Andrea Bocelli and his son Matteo, but I wish they’d just keep it simple and keep things focused on the people we’ve lost, the rest are just too distracting.

HIGHLIGHTS

Da’Vine Joy Randolph might as well change her name to Divine Joy… she’s the highlight early in the evening with her gracious and emotional speech. Love her performance in The Holdovers!

Ryan Gosling might have won the night despite not winning an award. His Barbenheimer rivalry banter with Emily Blunt is funny and endearing. The duo is starring in The Fall Guy where Gosling is playing a stunt guy, so it makes sense for them to honor some of cinema’s best stunts.

Come on Academy, when will the Best Stunts category be introduced?! As they aptly said, they are the unsung heroes of cinema!

As for Gosling, if there’s an award for Best Musical Performance By an Actor at the Oscars, he’d win in a landslide last night!!

Here’s the full I’m Just Ken performance,

So fun seeing all the Barbie Movie‘s Kens reunite… and hey, there’s even Bob Marley 😀 Kingsley Ben-Adir must still be riding high as Bob Marley: One Love is a smashing success, currently stands at $160 million worldwide!!

Glad to see Christopher Nolan won Best Director… Oppenheimer truly is an astounding achievement. I stand by what I said in my review, it’s a majestic, haunting, thought-provoking piece of cinema that further cements Nolan’s auteur status.

I don’t think anyone bet against Oppenheimer winning, though I’d be as happy if Past Lives or Poor Things had won.

So Oppenheimer now stands as the 3rd highest-grossing Best Picture winner, behind Titanic and Lord of the Rings – Return of the King.

If I still had a WTF segment in this Oscars post, this bit would’ve definitely made the cut. Now, not all WTF is terrible though. This 1974 Oscars streaker recreation could’ve been cringe-y and tasteless but John Cena managed to make it hilarious!

Well, that concludes this year’s award season! What did you think about last night’s ceremony?

    1. Mwahahahaha! Yeah I would love to get an award for getting a lot of predictions right 😀 Btw what did you think of John Cena’s naked presentation? I thought you’d get a kick out of that! 😉

Haha, would have loved it if he turned around, I could have had another great specimen for my “collection.” !!

As usual, I always forget that the Oscars was airing but with your tweets and others on Twitter/X, I don’t need to watch the show. Also, I don’t have cable anymore, so I can’t even watch the live show. Ha ha!

I didn’t realize that people were so upset about Lily Gladstone not winning the award. As I said in my review of KOFM, she’s good but I didn’t think she’s that great. Also, her character wasn’t in the movie that much in the last two hours. I assume some people are just upset that another white actress won over a non white actress.

Now that Nolan finally won the golden statue, I hope he tries making some other genre besides big even films. He said likes to dab into horror, I’d love to see that!

    1. Yeah I remember from your review that Lily Gladstone weren’t around in the third act much. I think they initially were going to submit her in the Best Supporting Actress instead of the Lead, it’s a similar case to Michelle Williams in The Fabelmans who should’ve been submitted in the supporting category too. Yeah the uproar is because she would’ve been the first Native American woman to win the leading role. Well I for one am thrilled that Emma won because she’s absolutely astounding and she owned the movie!

Yeah I read Nolan was interested in doing horror, well if he does I hope it’s more of a horror mystery, can’t imagine he’d be doing a gory slasher flick. https://www.vulture.com/article/why-emma-stone-beat-lily-gladstone-at-the-2024-oscars.html

  4. I didn’t watch it this year as I was busy cleaning my house and I also no longer have cable. Plus, I fucking hate Daylight Savings time as I thought it was 8. Not 7.

I’m content with a lot of the winners this year. I have no problem with Emma Stone winning over Lily Gladstone as honestly. It was the better performance though Gladstone at least got nominated but Emma was a good sport. I’m happy for Christopher Nolan to finally getting that Oscar as does his wife and the entire team including Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. I’m happy for Da’Vine Joy Randolph. I’m fucking elated over Godzilla in getting its Oscar with that great moment of Arnold and Danny DeVito seeing Michael Keaton and challenging him to a fight as Keaton became Batman again and was like “bring it!”

I did watch Ryan Gosling’s performance of “I’m Just Ken”. Give that man all of the awards! It was better than I thought it would be. I didn’t see the Bocellis performance but that picture was cringe. TCM usually does a better job in these memoriams. Oscars just plainly fucking suck at it.

    1. Hi Steven, I can’t blame you for cleaning your house, hey at least you’re productive. Yeah, they changed the time to an hour earlier, I was also rushing from my friend’s daughter’s play that I almost missed it.

Man, I still need to see Godzilla Minus One! It’s so cute to see the VFX team with all the godzilla action figures! I totally forgot to include the bit w/ Mr Freeze + Penguin’s banter with Batman, but I LOVE that. Yes, I’d love to see Keaton play another Batman again, he’s the only good thing in The Flash!

I’ve rewatched I’m Just Ken a few times since, it’s so much fun!!

      1. I like to clean in the weekends as a way to have something to do. Plus, I don’t like a dirty home.

I too want to see Godzilla Minus One but I was so happy that the franchise won their first Oscar.

We were supposed to have Keaton return as Batman in Batgirl but David Zaslav killed it. I hate that fucker.

I’ve watched that performance of “I’m Just Ken” a few times already and man… I love it.

        1. Man, I wish I had seen Godzilla Minus One in the theaters! It’s now gone from all the cinema near me 😦 No idea when it’ll be on VOD.

Yeah I can’t stand that Zaslav guy, screw him!!

The ‘I’m Just Ken’ performance is one for the ages!!

  5. Congratulations on your 20 right out of 23, EF! Your years of boning up for film school have paid off in bragging rights on the blog-to-end-all-blogs. But seriously, you have an encyclopedic mind for film. I still recall you going to my blog (coming again, soon, I hope?) and quoting references from film after film, like Fortune Favors the Bold being tattooed on John Wick. I DID NOT KNOW THAT. Yeah, film is funny. It slips away from you, like time …

Great analysis of the Oscars! As I mentioned previously, I missed this year’s ceremony due to time zones. I wasn’t too happy with the winners. I loved “Oppenheimer” but didn’t feel it deserved 7 wins. I also didn’t like the fact that “Past Lives” didn’t win a single thing. Here’s my review of this year’s best picture winner:

    “Oppenheimer” (2023)- Movie Review

    1. Oh yeah, I remember reading your review! I’m sorry again that you and your family had endured a bomb blast like that, that’s something nobody should ever had to experience.

Btw, do you celebrate Ramadan? If so, happy Ramadan, Huilahi!

      1. Huilahi

Thanks Ruth. I appreciate your concern. I suppose going through that traumatic experience made me appreciate the film even more. I do celebrate Ramadan! Thanks for the comment.

I’m having conflicted feelings about Wes Anderson winning the Live Action Short Film award. I thought The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar was outstanding but I’ve also always believed that this award is a holy grail for young, independent, talented filmmakers to break into the industry. Having the prefix “Academy Award nominee/winner” will definitely supercharge their careers and open up a world of opportunities that are so hard to come by. Giving the Oscar to a director who has already established his position, with the clout to raise the money and attract A-list actors to his projects feels to me unfair to the passionate dreamers who could really benefit from getting their 90 seconds of limelight on the Oscar stage.

    1. Hello! I absolutely agree with your comment, 100%!! I haven’t seen The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and probably it’s good enough to be nominated but like you said, I wish the Academy voters would bestow that particular award to indie filmmakers trying to break into the industry instead of an established filmmaker like Wes Anderson! On a side note, I wasn’t at all impressed by Asteroid City which is more of a showcase of a talented ensemble cast, and his short film also has an amazing cast of famous actors.

  8. Terrific post.

Thanks for the recap! All in all a fab show.

Myself, as a voting member, I’m partial to the EMMYs. Can’t help it!

Do you ever cover the Emmys?

    1. Hello, welcome to FlixChatter! I actually rarely watch the EMMYs as I don’t watch enough shows these days and the ones I do are usually not nominated. Of course that could change so maybe one day I’ll blog about the EMMYs too, cheers!
