I’ve been on the lookout for the trailer for this after this premiered at Sundance earlier this year. The title alone piqued my interest, but then I saw Emma Thompson is the star, so naturally it jumps to my must-see list!
Synopsis: In Good Luck To You, Leo Grande, two-time Academy Award® winner Emma Thompson embodies the candor and apprehension of retired teacher Nancy Stokes, and newcomer Daryl McCormack (Peaky Blinders) personifies the charisma and compassion of sex worker Leo Grande. As Nancy embarks on a post-marital sexual awakening and Leo draws on his skills and charm, together they find a surprising human connection.
The official trailer has been released below:
It’s so refreshing to see a sex dramedy that actually has something profound to say and this one looks delightfully real in terms of a woman’s body image concerns and sexual inhibitions. I love Emma Thompson who’s got such wonderful comic timing and frankness about her that’s so fun to watch. I’m not sure I’d be as keen on this subject matter if it weren’t for her as the lead. This trailer had me blushing and laughing in equal measure, and I LOVE that last bit when Nancy asks Leo the oldest person he’s ever done it with, ha!
Plus I love the female forces behind the camera. The director is multi-award-winning filmmaker Sophie Hyde who has won awards for her work in her native Australia, she also serves as executive producer. British comedienne/actress Katy Brand penned the screenplay.
I’m not familiar with Daryl McCormack but he was in Peaky Blinders and Wheel of Time. He’s definitely VERY easy on the eyes and looks like the two are well-matched. Per IMDb, McCormack and Thompson did not require an intimacy coordinator to orchestrate their sex scenes. “We just thought if we really focus on getting to know one another and being comfortable with one another, that we’ll be able to do all the work ourselves,” McCormack explains, describing what sounds like an intense, method-acting approach. “We would walk to set together, we would walk home together. We would eat together, run the lines for the next day together, go to sleep and then repeat. So, for like a good four weeks we were just living in each other’s pockets and we became so close. We are very close now.”
Good Luck To You, Leo Grande drops on HULU on June 17, 2022. I hope I get an advanced screener for this soon.
