Everybody’s Chattin + Trailer Spotlight: The Big Short

Happy Tuesday everyone! Well, it’s a three-day work week for me so technically today’s already *Friday* for me, wahoo! πŸ˜€Β  I’ll be taking a week blogging break as my hubby and I are flying to Arizona Thursday to hang out with an old friend of hours who moved there last year from MN. I’m also going to be visiting my friend Cindy B. whom I met through the blog! I’ve had the privilege of meeting a few blog friends over the years, it’s truly one of the perks of blogging! πŸ˜€

SoΒ about those links…

  • Speaking of Cindy, she just posted a classic review of The Terrace, starring real life couple Paul Newman + Joanne Woodward
  • Michael posted some thoughts on Sicario, which Ted will be seeing tonight as I can’t make it to the press screening. On a related note, Adam reviewed another Denis Villeneuve film, Prisoners.
  • Mark reviewed the acclaimed documentary AMY on Amy Winehouse, whilst Jordan apparently isn’t wowed by Joel Edgerton’s directorial debut The Gift.
  • Jay & her crew have been busy covering TIFF 2015 and posted this awesome TIFF by the numbers post.
  • A lot of Oscar front-runners are no doubt coming out of TIFF and other film festivals, but check out one of the most important blog award, that is Drew’s Fisti Awards on the year 1990
  • Last but not least, have you checked out Margaret‘s Tom Hardy Appreciation yet? I always love celeb crush appreciation, and who doesn’t love Tom Hardy? πŸ˜›

Trailer Spotlight: The Big Short

Boy, for some reason I hadn’t even heard of The Big Short! Apparently it’s been in the works for some time and even movie pundits thought it wouldn’t be ready until 2016. Well, today they released a trailer and sounds like this could be an award contender for Christian Bale and Steve Carell. I love the casting of those two, but why’s Bale sporting the same haircut as his younger Bruce Wayne days?? Despite my indifference (I’m being nice here) to Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling, I am looking forward to seeing this!

The film is based on the book by Michael Lewis (The Blind Side, Moneyball) focuses onΒ men who made millions from a global economic meltdown. Here’s the official synopsis:

When four outsiders saw what the big banks, media and government refused to, the global collapse of the economy, they had an idea: The Big Short. Their bold investment leads them into the dark underbelly of modern banking where they must question everyone and everything

I saw Marisa Tomei and Melissa Leo in the cast list but I could barely spot them. Heck, Karen Gillan actually got third billing on IMDb but she’s not even in the trailer (or if she was, it must’ve been a blink-and-you-missed it moment). I have no idea how thisIMDb STARmeter works but how in the world is her starmeter higher than Carell AND Gosling??Β [scratch head]

Anyhoo, a few trivia about this movie from IMDb… This will be Adam McKay‘s first time directing a drama and also his first film not starring Will Ferrell. I really enjoyed The Other Guys and Ant-Man but he also wrote Get Hard which I have absolutely no desire to see. We’ll see how he fares in a drama though it’s not devoid of comedic moments judging from the trailer. According to Michael Lewis (the author of The Big Short novel), the big four: Bale, Pitt, Gosling, and Carell all agreed to take significant pay cuts in order to be in the film.

According to THR, Oliver Stone’s Snowden moved out of the Christmas frame to 2016, opening up the slot for The Big Short. Paramount will release the film in limited release on Dec. 11 and then wide on Dec. 23. The film also will make its world premiere as AFI’s closing night film on Nov. 12. Man, there are SOOO many good movies coming out this Christmas.

So what do you think of The Big Short trailer?

    1. Ah yeah I suppose Dr Who is massively popular. It’s funny but my crush Stanley apparently never watched the show when he co-starred w/ her in Not Another Happy Ending so he was baffled as to why paparazzi was hounding her throughout the shoot. It kinda made me like him more that he’s more of a theater nerd πŸ˜›

  1. Another film based upon a great book. The Big Short is one of those true stories that plays like a thriller, and one that will piss off most of us who picked up the tab of the 2008 economic meltdown. So looking forward to this, and thanks so much for the linkage, Ruth.

    1. Hi Michael! Yeah I think films about the financial crisis will continue to be popular as it’s entertaining AND infuriating. Did you see Margin Call? That’s a good one too.

Pleasure about the linkage! Ted is watching Sicario as we speak πŸ™‚

  2. What star power. Oliver Stone did a similar story with Money Never Sleeps. I liked it probably more than most. It will be interesting to see this version of the big fall of 2008. Can’t deny the cast. It would lure me in despite Adam McKay directing it — that said, like ninvoid, let’s see what he does with it. I’ll go see it!

    1. Oh that’s the Wall Street sequel right? I never saw that one. Yeah I’d see this for the cast.

P.S. Can’t wait to see you this weekend Cindy πŸ˜‰

  3. I haven’t heard of The Big Short before. The trailer doesn’t do anything for me haha, but the story sounds pretty intriguing. I hear you about all the movies coming on and around Christmas.

    1. Hey Eddie! You didn’t like the cast? For me, the cast make a huge difference and I’ve always been a big fan of Bale. Christmas is always a busy time for movies, and I’m glad Snowden is delayed to make room for this one. I’d rather watch this one any day.

      1. I was trying to remember earlier today who was that fourth big name actor in this movie… oh yeah it’s Bale, haha. He’s a great actor but I don’t think I specifically will watch a movie just because he’s in it.

    1. My pleasure Adam! I like this ensemble cast, and though I’m not a big fan of Gosling, he actually looks like he’s well cast here. Yeah, I think ppl are curious what McKay will fare doing a drama.

    1. Hi Courtney! There seems to be more and more films shot in Louisiana. You’re a fan of Gosling eh? I’m not fond of him at all but will see this despite his casting πŸ˜‰

        1. That is super cool! I think that’s smart that they have such a good tax incentive to bring the filmmakers over. I wish that’s the case w/ Minnesota, we’re so stingy w/ tax breaks! So have you been able to spot some famous ppl filming over the years?

    1. Pleasure Jordan! I actually like the more subtle and less slapstick comedy style here, not the usual broad & rather crude style of McKay. And that cast, man!

  4. I’ll definitely check it out. I like the cast and I appreciate Adam McKay trying something different. He’s so hilarious I’m sure there will be a least a few comedic moments in there. This is the guy who let his two year old swear at Will Ferrell for a web video. lol

    1. Hi Brittani! Yeah the cast is enough to get me to see it, but intrigued by McKay directing. I think there WILL be some comedic elements, even the trailer seems whimsical despite the serious subject.

  5. First…thanks for the link and the super kind words! You’re the best.

Second…that trailer does nothing for me, sadly…but I’m sure I’ll see it since my wife wants to sleep with the half of the cast you could care less about.

    1. My pleasure Drew! You put so much effort into your award posts and it shows πŸ˜€

Ahah, you’re too funny!! So she’s into Gosling & Pitt eh? For me, having Bale here automatically puts this on my to-see list, love him! I also love Carell, he’s immensely watchable.

  6. Even in my absence, everybody is still chatting? πŸ˜‰

Hi Ruth, thought I’d drop by and see how things are going. They are still going strong by the looks of it.

Great highlight on The Big Short. This is right up my street this one.

    1. Hello Mark! Are you back blogging now? Lovely to see you matey!

I’m actually blogging less now as I’m working on my first ever script. Yeah, I think you’ll like The Big Short. Hope to see you around again soon Mark! πŸ˜€

      1. Yeah, I’m easing my way back into the blog. Done a couple of posts already but I’m still going to take it easy. I want to enjoy blogging again without it being a chore.

A script you say? Well done. I’m intrigued.

        1. Hi Mark! I was on vacation since last Thursday so pardon the late reply. Yeah I’m working on a script, the story is a simple one, more like an indie film and it’s actually a modern romantic drama, which is my kind of genre πŸ™‚ It’s been a lot of fun writing it, I just want to finish by year’s end.

    1. My pleasure Margaret! I’m thrilled that you’re one of the few girls who don’t care for Gosling either, yay! But yes, I do like Carell a lot so he’s one of the main draw for me as well.

  7. Oooh, The Big Short looks like it could be good! Well, I hope so at least. Thank you as always for the mention Ruth. I may not be able to write as many reviews as I would like at the moment, so to get some extra exposure is appreciated!

  8. I’ll definitely see The Big Short for the cast alone, but I have reservations about McKay directing. Plus, the trailer annoyingly credits Brad Pitt as an Oscar nominee, when he just *won* one less than two years ago. LOL, that stuff bugs the Oscar nerd in me. πŸ˜‰
