Oh who doesn’t love LEGO®. The colorful interlocking plastic bricks and an accompanying array of gears are perhaps one of the most universally-loved toys in the world. I actually saw a documentary of LEGO on the inception of that company in Billund, Denmark in 1949. I doubt inventor Ole Kirk Christiansen would ever imagine that his creation would be a worldwide phenomenon!
I’m surprised it took 65 years to finally have the first full-length theatrical LEGO adventure. But the advanced animation technology with 3D rendering allows this toys to REALLY come alive on screen.
Directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street) the original 3D computer-animated story follows Emmet (voiced by Chris Pratt), an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average LEGO minifigure who is mistakenly identified as The Special, the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously under-prepared.
It’s tough not to be perked up by its buoyant spirits. The voice cast is simply stellar!
Will Ferrell is the voice of President Business, aka Lord Business, an uptight CEO who has a hard time balancing world domination with micro-managing his own life, and Liam Neeson is the voice of Lord Business’s loyal henchman, Bad Cop/Good Cop, who will stop at nothing to catch Emmet. Then there are Morgan Freeman as the ancient mystic Vitruvius; Elizabeth Banks as tough-as-nails Wyldstyle, who mistakes Emmet for the savior of the world and guides him on his quest; Elizabeth Banksas the mysterious Batman, a LEGO minifigure with whom Wyldstyle shares a history; Nick Offerman as the craggy, swaggering pirate Metal Beard, obsessed with revenge on Lord Business; Alison Brie as the sweet and loveable Unikitty and Charlie Day as Benny, the 1980-something Spaceman.
Check out the featurette on how they created the lego movie.
…
I love the main song Everything is Awesome! Can’t help humming it as it actually makes me feel happy, ahah. LOVE this cute Behind the Bricks featurette, with each LEGO character talking about the actors *playing* them, ahah. What a fun universe to be transported to.
…
I saw the movie last Saturday and had a blast. I’d have to agree with the critics on this one, so far it’s garnered 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes! The theme of *master builder* fits what the LEGO product is all about, and the sense of adventure will definitely please kids and the kids in all of us. It’s really a joyful film that also has a good message in the end about spurring creativity on kids and for parents to build them up instead of restricting them. I think the studio is confident this movie will do well that there’s already a sequel in the works.
What do you think folks? Are you going to see the LEGO movie?
Good stuff. I think once Lego got into licensing big franchises, that when a movie began to make sense. The Lego video games have been tremendous. They have given us Lego versions of Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, Batman, Lord of the Rings, The Marvel Universe, etc. it was a genius move that opened the brand up tremendously. I’ll be seeing it with two anxious kids. Heck I’ve even heard the 3-D is good!
Oh this will be a fun one for the whole family, Keith! I’m glad it’s also pretty clean, no cheap bathroom humor or vulgar jokes that sometimes creeps up even in animated movies. The 3D is pretty good though I think in 2D is probably fine, too. The LEGO characters are so darn cute!
Hey Ruth. Are you going to write a full review of the flick? And I’m sure I’ll see it eventually. 😉
I will also be back to watch these videos a little later, when I’m not on my phone. Thanks for sharing them.
Yes I will but most likely this weekend as I’m hoping to post the Monuments Men review tomorrow.
Yeah, check out the featurettes. It’s really a lot of fun!
Love Chris Pratt and Nick Offerman on Parks and Rec so I’ll be checking this out this weekend.
It’s interesting that Pratt has been popping up everywhere this year, w/ HER and now this one. He’s well, awesome in this though, perfect voice casting right there. Offerman is always fun too, love him!
awww I absolutely LOVE that second featurette you posted, thats so clever! Man this film is going to be so much bigger (and hopefully better) than I had imagined. I can’t wait!
Hi Tom! Yeah I LOVE that Behind the Bricks featurette, I just had to share. It’s really a lot of fun, I had a great time watching it and don’t mind going again.
Not sure if I’ll ever check this movie out but maybe when it hits Bluray and I have to babysit my niece and nephew, I might watch it with them. I’m sure it’s going to be a big hit since it’s opening in the dead winter season and no competition to speak of.
Yeah I think it’ll definitely be a slam dunk box office wise. Kids will dig it for sure but it’s a lot of fun for adults as well.
Well, I’m going to see Labor Day and Monuments Men this weekend as it might be the only movies I’ll see this month. Maybe when it comes on TV unless the reviews from the bloggers are great.
Haven’t seen Labor Day but since I just saw Monuments Men, this one is definitely more fun to watch and frankly, a better-made movie.
The marketing for this film has been spot on, and I can’t remember the last time I have said that about a film. Hadn’t caught that featurette before so thanks for sharing. Twas brilliant stuff.
Glad to hear the film was good as well. Think it is still a month or so away here unfortunately.
What country are you based in? Well, looks like you already got Robocop before we do here in the States, I’m just about to read your review 🙂
I’m in Australia. We occasionally get things a little early. But more and more the last couple of years there have been frustratingly long gaps. The Lego Movie is not out here til April actually. Skyfall was another one where I had to avoid spoilers for months.

Cool post, Ruth! I loved the little featurettes. Really looking forward to seeing this movie, which is weird because I rarely anticipate animated movies but this one has been getting such strong buzz. It actually opened today here but it’s dubbed everywhere and you know how I feel about that.
Hi Fernando, sorry I missed your comment somehow. That is such a bummer why they dub stuff in Mexico. They do that in Indo too sometimes which annoy the heck out of me too. I mean what is the point of hiring those awesome voice cast??!
I know, it’s awful! I’ll be going over to SD this weekend to see it, so it’s all good!
How was your birthday?
Oh good!! At least you can still go to the US for the non-dubbed version, ahah.
It ended up being a busy day yesterday but it’s good, hubby got me a new laptop which is awesome 😀 Thanks for asking Fernando, you’re a real pal.
New laptop! Cool 😉 and you’re welcome (and likewise)
Just saw this last night and love it so, so much! I’m impressed with the directors as I loved the first Cloudy film and enjoyed 21 Jump Street. I’m glad I’ve haven’t seen the trailers or featurettes befores I saw The Lego Movie however, as with comedy, I believe they give away some of the best jokes.
Hi Asrap, I haven’t seen any of the ‘Cloudy’ movie but I did enjoy 21 Jump Street. Fortunately this one is not at all foul-mouthed! You’re right it’s best that you don’t see the trailer first.
I’m definitely seeing this. Not only did I love LEGO growing up, but I think the movie looks funny and entertaining. 🙂
It is Josh! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I’m still humming that awesome song 😀
Saw this yesterday and had so much fun, it was everything I wanted it to be! It got a little schmaltzy at times but it was packed full of so much cool stuff that I really want to see it again.
Just posted my review, yeah it’s really a lot of fun. Even the schmaltzy part is still tolerable in LEGO form, ahah.
It’s hard to process everything that’s happening in one viewing because it moves so fast. The action is pure chaos, but it’s cute fun. Nice write up. I just posted my own review. 🙂
I’ll be over to compare notes. Mine’s just posted as well Mark, I feel that the action is borderline ADD at times, but overall still hugely entertaining.
