Tube Watch: First Trailer of CW’s ARROW looks quite promising

What is it with archery-skilled heroes that I find intriguing? Legolas, Robin Hood, Katniss Everdeen, and soon Princess Merida in Pixar’s BRAVE … somehow the art of shooting with a bow and arrow just looks so darn cool on screen.

Now, this Fall, the CW network is bringing the show ARROW based on the Comics Green Arrow. It’s odd that they only used the one word title but never mind that, the trailer actually looks pretty good, and I’m not even the targeted CW demographic. The production quality is quite impressive as well. According to HitFix, judging by their 2012-13 upfront presentation to advertisers, this looks like the new show the network is most excited about.

Check out the trailer below:

Now, I think that scene of him shooting at all the tennis balls to the wall is pretty darn cool, and I like that the vibe of the origins story seems to be inspired by Batman Begins. It also looks a heck of a lot darker and more hard-edged than the ever-so-corny Smallville and Vampire Diaries, thank goodness!

You can read the full synopsis on the show’s main site, but basically, the protagonist Oliver Queen is a billionaire playboy who makes Starling City his home. Just like Bruce Wayne, he lives a dual identity… a hooded vigilante by night and a wealthy, carefree and careless philanderer by day. But he’s a rich, handsome playboy with a purpose of course, and his goal is to right the wrongs of his family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory.

Canadian Stephen Amell seems well-cast judging from this clip, obviously the extent of his acting skills remains to be seen, but he seems to have the physique that would make even Patrick Bateman jealous 😉 He resembles Christian Bale a bit too, which is never a bad thing in my book. He definitely has that dark, brooding look about him, a huge improvement over Justin Hartley as Green Arrow Smallville, glad they didn’t use him here.

Well, I definitely will give the pilot a chance and we’ll see how long it’ll hold my interest. It’s scheduled to air Wednesdays @ 7 PM Central Time before Supernatural.

What do you think of the trailer folks? Does it pique your interest?

  1. Don’t forget about Hawkeye from ‘The Avengers’ as another in the current line of archers in the limelight. Yeah, this doesn’t look bad and I may check it out (at least it doesn’t conflict with anything). Thanks, Ruth.

    Hi, Ruth and company:

Looks and sounds more like Jim Caviezel from ‘Person of Interest’ on CBS to me. Especially in the beginning of the clips. Long hair, beard and all.

Also, in a city of millions, wouldn’t a tall guy in a suit be much more ominous, anonymous and threatening than a modern day, green togged and hooded Robin Hood?

Fully expecting insurance premiums to skyrocket in Starling City. Due to car wrecks, accidents and abandoned warehouses and caverns blowing up for no good reason.

In other words. Good CW fun!

    1. Ahah, too funny Jack! Yeah, he’d be more incognito in a suit but he’d be much less agile 🙂 Besides I think he does his superheroics at night anyway, during the day he’s a billionaire playboy, a la Bruce Wayne.

  3. I partially disagree with you on the Vampire Diaries, but anyways the trailer looks alright. I might tune in, but i’m already watching a bunch of tv so its a maybe..

    1. Sorry Julian, I take it you’re a fan of Vampire Diaries? I couldn’t even finish watching one episode, yes despite how ridiculously gorgeous Ian Sommerhalder is 🙂 This one hopefully have a much better dialog. Fortunately I’m not watching any TV show at the moment so I won’t have scheduling conflict.

      1. Actually even fans of the Vampire Diaires agree that the first few episodes are kind of horrible…personally for me it was the 12 episode that hooked me. And while it can be corny at times, i do think it also has its dark moments.

Looks interesting but it reminds me way too much of Batman Begins, I might give it a shot on the first episode. Too bad the film version never took off from development stage, I was looking forward to seeing Matt Damon as The Green Arrow.

I have to strongly disagree with you on Smallville being corny, I thought the first three seasons were the best TV series in a while. It was so well written and directed that I hope they’d turn into a movie. But the last few seasons were just silly, I guess it happens to any good shows, after a while the writers just runs out of good ideas. They should’ve ended the show after the 4th season.

    1. Oh I thought the first few seasons of ‘Smallville’ was all right but it got progressively worse that I couldn’t watch anymore. Welling is the most gorgeous creature on the planet but he’s a worse actor than even Brandon Routh and the dialog doesn’t help either. Yep I think they should’ve quit before the show overstayed its welcome

I really dug the Luther and Clark storyline on the first couple of seasons of the show, didn’t really care for the Lana Lang storyline though. I just love how they create this back story of how Lex was actually kind of a good guy but there’s something dark inside him and he knows something about Clark that he cam use to his advantage. So he decided to be friends with Clark. I wish they stuck with that storyline and end it with Clark becoming Superman and of course Lex becoming the Lex we all know and love/hate.

  5. lots of gorgeous people in the show which me approves 🙂
I also think NBC’s REVOLUTION should be good. I’m posting lots of new shows trailers these days at my place, Tuesday and Wednesday as well 🙂

    1. Ahah, indeed Dezzy, but I like how rugged Amell is, unlike a bunch of pretty boys on TV these days. Oh yeah, the REVOLUTION trailer looks intriguing. I’ll check out your trailers next week 😀

  6. Hmm, not sure. The trailer does look impressive, you’ve got that right. It has a bit of an air of Birds of Prey about it though. That did not go well.

I think I’m getting tougher on pilots these days, it’ll take a lot to make me stick with it!

    1. I’ve never seen ‘Birds of Prey,’ is that a UK show? The nice thing about not watching any TV is that I don’t have much to compare it to. You’re right about being tough on pilots though. I’d give this a shot but if the next couple of episodes don’t wow me, I’ll stop watching. It’ll take more than a pretty face to keep me interested.

      1. Ted S.

The less you know about Birds of Prey the better Ruth, it’s another show from WB, it’s actually created by the same team who created Smallville, so if you don’t like Smallvile, then you’ll really hate Birds of Prey. It’s an awful show.

  7. Really pleased they’ve done this. I always wanted a decent superhero tv show and this looks like it could be one. The last one we had was the first couple of seasons of Smallville before it got too silly and ahead of itself. Just hope they show this in the UK soon too.

    1. Woo hoo! All right Ben, glad you like this one, I really hope it delivers. I’m usually not a big fan of this network but this one certainly looks good. Hope it’ll get to the UK soon, too!
