The good, the bad and the crazy… of this week’s movie news

Happy Wednesday, folks. Well, the post article says it all, so let’s just get to them, shall we?

First, the good news:

Cate Blanchett will reprise her role as Galadriel in The Hobbit

I have not read the book but I do know the royal Elf doesn’t appear in it, but I trust that Peter Jackson has a good reason for including her. I LOVE Cate Blanchett, and her role as Galadriel as well as her narration is one of my favorite part about The Lord of the Rings. So it’s all the more reason to anticipate The Hobbit. She’d join an already stellar cast which was announced back in October. Peter Jackson is apparently a fan of the classy Aussie actress, “Cate if one of my favorite actors to work with and I couldn’t be more thrilled to have her reprise the role she so beautifully brought to life in the earlier films,” he said of Blanchett (per Deadline article). YAY!

District 9 Director & Actor reunite for another sci-fi, Elysium

Sharlto Copley & Neill Blomkamp

I had been hoping to see a follow-up to the excellent sci-fi hit District 9 (read my review), but hey, I don’t mind seeing another sci-fi flick from the South African duo. According to Deadline this movie is Blomkamp’s long-awaited story set in the far future on another planet and, like District 9, is filled with many sociopolitical ideas wrapped up inside a Hollywood action film. I hope Blomkamp retains the same factors of what made D-9 so fresh and unique in the first place : original concepts, employ unknown but compelling actors, gritty & realistic setting, etc. Looks like by casting Copley again, he’s already in the right track. This is definitely one to watch!

The bad news:

Chris Tucker is back on the big screen to annoy possibly star in… well it really doesn’t matter, just the fact that he’s back making movies isn’t exactly great news to me. To be fair, he was pretty funny in The Fifth Element and the first Rush Hour, but y’know, he’s one of those people that way overstay their welcome. It’s mind boggling that he reportedly got as much as $45 million for a two-picture deal with New Line Cinema, and one of them is the crappola that is Rush Hour 2 (per HeyUGuys blog).

The not-so-good news:

Johnny Depp might not be starring in 21 Jump Street after all.

I blogged about this a while ago that Depp was reportedly interested in a cameo role. Now, as a fan of the show (and his character Tom Hanson) when I was growing up, that’d be the only reason I’d see the movie. Alas, according to CinemaBlend, the folks behind the upcoming feature haven’t contacted the mega star by now. Heh, maybe they think he isn’t bankable enough?

Well, lastly, file this one under Most Psychotic News:

The demented thriller American Psycho is being made into… a musical?

Ok, call me goody two shoes, but am I the only who think this is disturbing? I mean, I like Christian Bale and yes that is one of his groundbreaking killer role (literally), but come on! If you’re not familiar with the story (in which case, probably best if you don’t anyway), the movie’s main character Patrick Bateman is the epitome of ‘the devil comes in an attractive package.’ He’s a handsome, wealthy New York yuppie who works on Wall Street by day, and goes on murderous spree by night. Despite his privileged life, Bateman is constantly envious and dissatisfied with himself, which only fuels his psychopathic tendencies. I actually saw some of the most graphic scenes of the uncut version by mistake and I wish I could ‘un-see’ them. Sure, there are some comical part in the movie (especially that business card scene) but for the most part, it is bloody and brutal.

I do remember there were some catchy songs in that movie from Huey Lewis & The News, Genesis and David Bowie. So that explains the fact that the show will be set to music. According to this article, the show has reportedly been in the works since 2008 and music will be provided by Spring Awakening composer/90s pop star Duncan Sheik. It’s also going to be based Bret Easton Ellis’ novel, which was also the base of the Christian Bale movie. Suffice to say, plan on bringing your raincoat if you’re going to see this one.

Well, any thoughts about any of these news flash, folks?

I think Chris Tucker is one note, but when he hits it I think he can be incredibly dynamic.

As for Galadriel in The Hobbit, I suppose this means the group will be taking a different (or more divergent) path than in the book. In the book they travel much farther north through the Misty Mountains, which is why they completely overshoot Galadriel.

My guess is that this is part of Jackson’s efforts to make The Hobbit a more epic endeavor since the story is a rather simple one in nature.

Now American Psycho -> Musical? *ugh* Please say it isn’t so.

    1. Well, the thing is with him, he needs to turn down the annoying voice and actually ACT. It’s only funny for the first 2 minutes.

That is possible PJ will do that with The Hobbit, but given how faithful he was with LOTR, I’m hopeful he’s not going to take too much liberty. And if there’s one guy who can do epic, it’ll be him.

Glad you share my sentiment about AP. Whatever happen to the classic musicals? 😦

That “Elysium” looks like a no-brainer. I’m there. Still haunted by District 9. I really hope they can pull that off again!

    1. Yep, yep. I have yet to see D-9 again but I will soon, especially the special features. Y’know what, every time I hear the word Elysium, I always think of the quote from Maximus in Gladiator:

“If you find yourself alone, riding in the green fields with the sun on your face, do not be troubled. For you are in Elysium, and you’re already dead!”

    1. Ahahaha… I normally would censor that but I might allow it considering the circumstances. Oh Dezzy, I’m sooooo excited for The Hobbit!!

      1. well, I would never really do it, you know I’m well-behaved, but Chris really is an annoying Tucker, indeed! 😛
Yes, I wasn’t really excited about THE HOBBIT until today, since those boring little Hobbits were the dullest part of LOTR for me (especially in the 3rd part) but now with my queen Galadriel it is my Elven duty to watch it.

Hey Ruth, I hate to do this in a comment but I couldn’t find a contact form or email address for you. I wanted to talk to you about guest posting on your site. Would you mind emailing me at the address attached to this comment? Thanks!

Well, I guess we know how Jackson is going to deal with the lack of female characters in The Hobbit, now. I wouldn’t be surprised to see more women added to te cast, but I’ll be interested to see how he works them into the script.

I know it’ll be excellent, I’m just curious as to how.

    1. Well I certainly would support adding more women to the cast. There were few female characters in LOTR in general but they’re all compelling, especially Galadriel of course. Can’t wait to see how PJ will weave his magic once again.

    1. Ahahaha… I think you might have a good point there Julian. I’m not crazy about Chris Rock either but at least his voice isn’t as annoyingly high pitched 🙂

  5. Three words: “Cate Blanchett! Hooray!!” haha. I, too, am glad for her to take on the role of Galadriel once again!
On the other hand, At least we can say we’re glad there’s no Rush Hour 4! 🙂 Although, I think Chris Tucker might be able to do something other than comedy! I’d give him a chance. Curious to see what he will be involved in next.

    1. Well I think we should thank Jackie Chan also for NO Rush Hour 4. He at least realize what a terrible idea the sequels were. As for Tucker, I don’t believe anyone is a lost cause so who knows, he might still be able to surprise us.

I don’t know what’s going on with Chris Tucker’s career, after the first Rush Hour came out, he was in high demand. He got offers left and right from studios but he turned them all down, then Rush Hour 2 came out and again he was in high demand but he never accepted any offers. By the time Rush Hour 3 came out, I don’t think he’s relevant anymore. I highly doubt that whatever his new film will be, it won’t make a dent at the box office. I thought he was annoying in Fifth Element and all those Rush Hour films, his best work were in Friday and Dead Presidents.

As for the American Psycho musical, well that’s just strange.

  7. I’m actually rather excited to see The Hobbit (I suppose that’s the reason for all its endless hype), and I definitely enjoy Cate Blanchett. And, as for American Psycho being turned into a musical, it just makes me long for the days of Gene Kelly and Astaire & Rogers. I heard that Evil Dead, an ’80s lowest-budget horror flick, is also being given the musical treatment. But at least that would be in the “so bad it’s good” category. *shrug* I give up trying to make sense of modern entertainment. 🙂

    1. Hey there Sir Luke! So you’re the one spreading all the buzz… I was wondering about who the culprit is 😀

Yeah I’m with you about those what-so-called musicals… what an abomination to call such a thing ‘art.’ Evil Dead? Oh dear, they probably will have Bruce Campbell to cameo and teenage fanboys will swarm the theaters in droves, sheesh.

  8. American Psycho didn’t seem all that violent to me(I remember the camera not directly showing most of the violence except for 1 or possibly 2 scenes). Honestly, i feel like by todays standards its rather tame.

Of course the scenes your talking about may be deleted scenes that were on the uber special edition, which my dad didn’t get
