Random Musings and Miscellaneous DC Superhero Movie News

DC has been the underdog for the last decade or so, whilst Marvel have had much success with Iron Man, X-Men, Spiderman, Hulk, etc. But 2012 could just be their banner year if Batman 3, Superman reboot and possibly The Flash released in the same year! Now, that’d be a major milestone even Marvel would be hard pressed to match, especially given how massive Batman and Superman franchises are.

Here are just some random musings about various news I read in the past week or so:

  • There are so many Batman 3 rumors my head is spinning! But the most recent newsmaker is Tom Hardy being cast in a prominent role, reuniting him with Christopher Nolan after Inception (Deadline). They’re not saying what role he plays, but everyone’s been saying he’ll be the main villain, and methinks it’s a definite probability 🙂
The one villain constantly rumored to appear in Batman 3 is Catwoman. Another actor who was also in Inception, Marion Cottilard, was rumored to play the role (see my post from last September). However, if this news is to be believed, allegedly she turned down Warner Bros’ offer due to scheduling conflict. It’s said that WB offered her either as Catwoman or Talia Al Ghul. That’s too bad, I think she’d be perfect for either role, she’s the beauty with brain, with sex appeal to boot. You gotta love fan art, I found this photo on the left from this site.

Anyway, this news made me daydream which other Nolan’s alum would be great to join Batman 3. How about Guy Pearce (Memento), Rebecca Hall (The Prestige), or even David Bowie (The Prestige)? Wouldn’t that be awesome? Well, however the cast is shaping up, I have full confidence Nolan would make the right choices (yes, despite his decision to cast Katie Holmes as Rachel Dawes… but at least Maggie Gyllenhaal redeemed that character). Looks like filming would begin next April in New Orleans (Comingsoon.net), hope they’ll have some materials to show by next year’s ComicCon in June!
  • Switching gears to Man of Steel reboot. Now that we know Zack Snyder is at the helm, the frenzy will be over who’ll don the red and blue suit. Now, y’all know I have a soft spot for Gerry Butler, whose career skyrocketed because of 300 (just like Snyder himself). But it never entered my mind that he’d make a good Man of Steel! So I was quite startled that this AMC blog article includes him, along with four others, as actors the author could see in the role. (Just a side note, apparently the author was the guy who started TheMovieBlog.com, a blog I used to follow regularly, but he’s now apparently moved on). He’s not the only one as this blog also wish GB were Superman with the photo to prove it 🙂 Nah, as much as I love GB, I don’t think he’d fit as Superman.
  • I was quite happy to hear all the noise about General Zod possibly making comeback as the main villain. I LOVE Terrence Stamp’s elegant but sinister portrayal of Zod, and I’m kinda tired of Lex Luthor anyway. Give Supes a nemesis worth fighting for, will ya? But looks like it’s another fans’ wishful thinking as Snyder said at the overseas press conference for Legends of the Guardian that “for now, it’s just a rumor” (per LatinoReview) I did got a kick out of seeing someone suggested Rufus Sewell as General Zod in this ComicBookMovie.com forum. I never realized that they have similar eyes… and if they want to retain a British actor playing the role, then Rufus would be perfect! 😀
  • It’s fun speculating on all this casting stuff. But at this point, I’m not as concerned about who’ll don the Superman outfit or who’s likely to fight him… just as long as they have a solid script! So I hope this tittle-tattle that Nolan’s frequent collaborator David Goyer’s script is a mess has no truth to it. I’m not as worried as some people about Snyder helming this project, but a rushed script would spell disaster! I understand there is there is an ‘expiration date’ to the whole franchise (as I’ve mentioned here), but I don’t think risking the quality of the film will do the franchise any favor.
    …….
  • Ok, last but not least, looks like The Flash casting rumor is now underway. I read over at my buddy Dezmond’s blog Hollywood Spy that Bradley Cooper is considered for the role. I had no idea he was shortlisted for The Green Lantern as well, which went to Ryan Reynolds. Now, I’m not a fan of that comic, so I wish Reynolds got The Flash instead and let Cooper be Green Lantern. Oh well, I suppose The Hangover star is a hot commodity right now but he just doesn’t do anything for me. Besides, I’ve got my own picks for The Flash in this post, though popularity-wise I guess Cooper has the edge 😦

So folks, here’s my question to you: Which of the DC comic superheroes are your favorite? And while you’re at it, throw your own casting or plot idea/wish list or whatever else you want to chime in down below in the comment section.

Both our movie boyfriends (Ruf and Gerry)? Mentioned in the same blog post? And it wasn’t FlixChatter? Oh happy days!!

    1. Ahahaha… I know, isn’t that something? I was quite flabbergasted to find out about their ‘nominations’ on the same day. I would totally love seeing Rufus as Zod though, oh man, I know he could play sinister and being involved in something this high profile would surely boost his career!

As for GB, I’d rather see him reprise Phantom again (or do BURNS as he once promised) than play Supes.

  2. Honestly i’m not all that excited for Superman. I just feel it is kind of limited what you can do with him(for example, nearly every time Smallvile tries to do moral ambiguity IMo it ends up failing). But the again this reboot may end up surprising me

The Flash i think could be interesting, although it will probably end up similar to the Iron Man movies.

I’ve already told you about my NightWing idea, but i think Wonder Woman also deserves a movie of her own. It would be nice to see a independent female superhero(yes the X-men had woman, but they are all part of the team).

    1. Well even as a fan of Superman I cannot stand Smallville! It’s so darn cheesy with subpar acting and dumb, dumb dialog! I mean, they use the word ‘destiny’ like 25 times in a single episode, sheesh. Now, Superman and Smallville COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, and the fact that Nolan’s involved, I think it’s a safe bet they’d make it darker and less soap-opera-y than the previous version.

I don’t mind The Flash having a similar vibe as Iron Man, but I think they could still make it a bit different.

I believe Wonder Woman is being made into a TV show? Now, with the right person to play her, I’d love to watch that.

      1. I think the quality of Smallvile is sporadic IMO, though it thinks its more recent seasons have been better. But my point is that its hard to make a dark Superman movie because the character of superman doesn’t really allow for it, IMO anyways.

And my dad just told me about the wonder woman tv show thing. I would personally recommend Amy Acker for that role. She is one of the most underrated actress’s in sci/fantasy, and i think that is a role that could finally get her some real recognition.

        1. The episode I saw was from this season and I thought it was darn awful. I mean, what a lame Lois and even more ridiculous Zod, the only thing he had in common with Terrence Stamp was his British accent! I’m totally against Tom Welling as a movie Superman, in fact, I hope the movie will try to distance itself as far away as the series.

I still don’t know who Amy Acker is, but I’ll take your word for it, Julian 🙂

          1. To each there own, but i just mainly feel that its kind of limited what you can do with Superman, in my humble opinion.

I’m happy to hear you would take my word for it. I actually plan to include her a blog post of my fav underrated actors/actress’s at some point

            1. It is limited, which is why it’s amazing what Donner and Chris Reeve did with the first movie adaptation. It’s a more challenging superhero to adapt but it’s not impossible, just needs the right talent to pull it off. Let’s hope Nolan/Snyder collaboration can do it.

  3. Oh, Snyder and Gerry Berry in SUPERMAN would be the only thing that would make me wanna watch it 🙂

And I kinda like a weird, weird, weird idea from a year or two ago of Cher playing the slightly older and crazier Catwoman 🙂 🙂 🙂

And boohoo, Screenrant is more important to you than your Hollywood Spy when citing a source? 😦 😦 /cries inconsolably/

    1. So very sorry Dez, where is my manners? I did read about Cooper as Flash on your blog first, so I’ve fixed it on my post.

Ahahaha… Cher as an older Catwoman would be a riot, I doubt Nolan would go for that though. Funny how you have a nickname for practically everybody. Gerry Berry makes him seem like a cute little boy 😀 Oh Dez, you know I’d watch him as Supes too, even if I didn’t think he’s right for the role.

      1. ah, Flixy, of course we would watch Gerry in SUPERMAN.
And to admit the truth there were days when I though you were the one who started voting for him for that role around the net 🙂 And I applaud you for that 🙂 🙂

  4. Ted S.

My favorite of course is The Dark Knight himself, then The Man of Steel. I’m curious to see how both The Green Lantern and The Flash will turn out on the big screen though. We’ll get a glimpse of The Green Lantern when the teaser trailer will be attached to the new Harry Potter flix.

As for the new Superman, I think Snyder should just find some unknown actor or maybe an actor who’s been around for a awhile but no one notices him, like when Nolan chose Bale to be the new Dark Knight.

    1. My fave is Supes, then Batman and then Flash. Maybe because Superman: The Movie is the first movie I’ve ever seen on the theater. I’m not really anticipating Green Lantern, but if it looks good I might give it a chance.

Yeah, I’m all for Snyder going for an unknown or lesser-known actor. I do hope he considers Henry Cavill, he was under consideration before and I think he’d be a terrific choice.

  5. Gerard Butler as Superman? Never thought of it but it might just work after all. That would be some daring casting so I would love to see it. I thought they wanted to go younger but that would be cool 🙂

    1. I’m kind of against the idea of younger. I want him well into his duties and image, etc. I don’t want an introductory course, I want something fresh and out there.

And also………..am I the only one who liked Spacey as Lex Luthor? He was no Gene Hackman, but I thought he was cast right for the movie as it was intended to translate.

      1. I’m with Heather… please no more ORIGIN stories! We all know he’s from Krypton and all that. Oh I didn’t HATE Spacey as Luthor, in fact he was more menacing that the mischievous Hackman, but I’m just tired of the character in general. Bring on a rival who at least have equal strength as Supes or at least someone who’s a real threat to Supes and those he cares about.

Castor, I’m surprised you didn’t mind GB as Supes. It is daring and the advantage is that he has a good working relationship with Snyder. I doubt that’d happen though, that was simply a couple of people’s wishful thinking.

  6. What I think is pretty hilarious is that before you posted this, I had actually talked with a friend about Bradley Cooper playing as The Green Lantern or The Flash and was going to comment about it on your post about The Flash. It’s funny that Reynolds and Cooper are both getting so much attention lately and they are working on a buddy-cop movie project together also.

When it comes to my favorite DC hero, my vote will always go to Batman. He’s the one that, if I were rich, I could actually try to be. No matter how hard I try, I can never fly, or run faster than the speed of sound, or something like that. But perhaps, one day, I could be rich enough to be Batman!! What do ya think?! 🙂

    1. Oh I forgot they’re doing a buddy-cop movie together. But my sentiment still stands, I’m not crazy about the idea of Cooper as The Flash, but who am I to say right?

He..he.. I thought you’d rather be Spiderman, Scarlet 🙂 You’re right though, Batman is obviously the more “attainable” superhero than the indestructible Supes, but you not only have to be extremely wealthy but you need to be very well-connected AND have a certain physical prowess too.

      1. i guess a guy can dream! I would happily choose spiderman over batman, but my alterego is from the marvel universe instead of the dc universe. Batman definitely is the winner for me there! I suppose I don’t have to wish to be spiderman though…i AM him. 😉 I think I like your superhero post more than mine this time around! Nice work! -T

  7. I’m kind of a British/Australian actor/singer/starlet groupie. I have a thing that I just can’t explain for all of them. I’d love absolutely love and be devinely elated at the mere concept of Bowie being cast in Batman 3. Your devlish mind is a beautiful thing Ruth.

Rufus Sewell? That is pure genius and now I have the thought permanently embedded in my brain. I don’t see Gerry-YES CASTOR GERRY-as the Man Of Steel. I feel like someone quieter with a strong presence, but not obvious one should play the part. I actually liked the former casting of Branden Routh, but being a Snyder flick, I expect someone with some pizazz. Frankly I’d dig the idea of Billy Crudup. But that’s just me and my imagination.

    1. Yes Heather, I’m the same way too, that’s why I LOVE you! 🙂 As you can see, a lot of the people I recommend for various roles are mostly Brits or Aussies. I just thought that Bowie would make an awesome comeback in another Nolan film, either as a villain or the Dark Knight’s ally.

I know! The more I think about Rufus as Zod the more I can’t get it out of my mind! I do hope he’s at least considered… please, please Mr. Nolan! 🙂

I like that you said you want a ‘quieter’ actor for Supes, yeah Gerry is usually gregarious, even though in Dear Frankie he managed to pull off being quite serene. Brandon Routh definitely lacked the ‘sparkle’ or even that hint of mischief that Snyder usually like in his actor (GB, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, etc) Hmmm, Billy Crudup just doesn’t have the right physique, unless they go with a completely CGI-ed body 🙂

  8. Mike B.

I’d really LOVE to see Superman done right. That character/mythology has been with us for a long, long time. The ’70’s version was right on with Christopher Reeves and Brando. It needs a modern twist to make it relevant again. I hope they can make it happen!

Ryan Reynolds would be good as just about any DC character. He’s believable as a hero, and yet can be funny. That formula worked well with Iron Man.

    1. Yep, Superman: The Movie is the first movie I ever saw when I was a wee kid. It has yet to be topped IMO. Yeah, Reynolds is a pretty charismatic guy with a bad ass bod, a rare combination.

    1. Alien-like eyes, ha! In a good way of course, I think his eyes are so striking that it’s almost superhuman! If Cillian were a bit taller & buffer he would be a fine Superman, I think he kinda look like Tom Welling but obviously with 100 times better acting chops 🙂

    1. Actually he’s in S1 and S2, S3 is the one with Richard Pryor. Ha..ha.. maybe it’s the outfit that makes Stamp look like a ballet dancer 🙂

  9. If the Cotillard turning down Batman 3 thing ends up being true, I will be completely heartbroken. Not only would she have been perfect for either role, but the chance to see her in another big time feature with Nolan would’ve been great.

And Butler as Supes? I don’t exactly hate Butler, but that idea is absolutely horrid.

    1. I’m with you Red, she’d add a lot of class to either role if she signs on. I hope it’s just a rumor and Nolan would definitely considers her.

Oh come on now, not horrid, just ill-advised 🙂

  10. Well I wouldn’t mind seeing Eva Green as Catwoman…I think she would fit so perfectly in the Nolan universe.

I agree with you Ruth, Rufus would be smashing in the role. But I think, to be a Superman that breaks away from the pack, they really have to keep from retreading anything from the old films regardless of how much it would excite nostalgia driven fans.

    1. Eva Green! Oh Marc, the awesome things that come out of your head… yeah she’d be perfect… you know she smolders. Maybe it’s something in the French water.

Well props to whomever got that idea out there, I just found it via Google and the second I saw that pic, I thought BRILLIANT!

I agree, I hope Nolan & Snyder have the good sense to keep things fresh and really different… not ‘dark’ necessarily, just different.
