Flix Poster of the Week: You Will Meet a Tall, Dark, Stranger

Another year, another Woody Allen’s ensemble-cast movie. I’m not one to rush to see his movies, in fact, I can count with one hand how many of his films I have seen. But these posters of his upcoming rom-com just spell lovely. I love, love these! The illustrated silhouettes are so simple yet sooo romantic, seductive and makes me want to see the movie, which is the idea right? I don’t know which one I like best, probably the right one with the creative use of negative space and just a dash of spicy red against the black and white.

The trailer’s out on Apple‘s trailer page, and here’s the synopsis:

After Alfie leaves Helena to pursue his lost youth and a free-spirited call girl named Charmaine (Lucy Punch), Helena abandons rationality and surrenders her life to the loopy advice of a charlatan fortune teller. Unhappy in her marriage, Sally develops a crush on her handsome art gallery owner boss, Greg (Antonio Banderas), while Roy, a novelist nervously awaiting the response to his latest manuscript, becomes moonstruck over Dia (Freida Pinto), a mystery woman who catches his gaze through a nearby window. Despite these characters’ attempts to dodge their problems with pipe dreams and impracticable plans, their efforts lead only to heartache, irrationality, and perilous hot water.

You Will Meet a Tall, Dark, Stranger also stars Anthony Hopkins, Naomi Watts and Anna Friel. Now, the movie would have been VERY appealing to with an entirely different cast [perhaps with Matthew Goode or my new crush Karl Urban :)]. But Josh Brolin?? Major meh! I hope he ain’t the tall dark stranger, ’cause he definitely doesn’t come to mind when I think about such a man. Banderas maybe, if you’re into the heavy-accented, latin lover type. The way it is now, the only interesting part of this movie is just the posters. Oh, and perhaps the title, too. It’s long, but catchy.

  1. to misquote Hansel, ‘Woody Allen is someone I really admire. Not because I like his movies – I havent really seen any – but just the fact that he’s still making them.’

    1. Good one, Ross. Yeah that guy is prolific, the dude is 75 years old!! He and Ridley Scott should form a ‘mature auteur’ club together 🙂

  2. Woody Allen is like clockwork. He just pumps out movie after movie year after year.

PS: Ruth, I’m so sorry! I somehow left you off the draft board in the 7th round and skipped you over 😦 Make your pick at anytime. Jeez, I had to make a mistake like that right before the end of the draft 😦

    1. Yup. I might not admire his movies, but I admire his level of productivity!

No worries Castor!! I was a bit puzzled at first, but I thought I just forgot the rules and maxed out before everyone else did 🙂 I will make my pick in a jiffy, still trying to figure out who’ll play what.

  3. Nice, Ruth. If you know anything about me from reading magic lantern, you know I’m nuts about Woody Allen! I agree with you on the major “meh” for josh brolin here. Not crazy about that. I don’t think he’s the stranger though. I will surely see this and the trailer looks like typical Woody, but he just hasn’t made anything near great in over a decade. And yes, you must see Purple Rose! It’s his own favorite film of all of them….and it is beautiful. Funny, imaginative, sweet…

    1. Hi Peter, yes I know you love Woody… it’s quite obvious from your Avatar graphic 😀 I quite like Small Time Crooks, but really hated Scoop, not even Hugh Jackman can save that movie and I didn’t think Scar Jo’s character was interesting at all. Purple Rose is on next in my Netflix queue, can’t wait to see that one.

      1. haha! I forgot my avatar. Lemme know when you see Purple Rose. Curious to see what your thoughts are. Yes, I am a Woody fanatic. Scoop did stink. So did Jade Scorpion and the embarrassing Anything Else. His last great movie was Sweet and Lowdown. I did like Cassandra’s Dream though – that was ok. Small Time Crooks is fun, you are right. I am hoping this new one will be a solid effort.

OMG! Purple Rose of Cairo is one of my fav movies of all time, seen it many, many times and it never gets stale. Like you said, it’s funny, sweet, charming, sad, imaginative, clever, intriguing and romantic all rolled up at once, definitely Woody’s best and even more so. And me too, can’t wait to see what you have to say about it, rtm. Enjoy!
