Conspicuous Trailer of the Week: Iron Man 2

Ok, now with the Oscars behind us, bring on the Summer blockbusters! It’s no coincidence that the brand new Iron Man 2 trailer’s released right after the Sunday telecast on Jimmy Kimmel LIVE.

I was kind of meh about the first trailer that’s more Mickey Rourke’s Whiplash-centered, but this new one looks awesome! I especially dig that last scene with the briefcase-turned-Iron-suit thing-y, major ass-kickin’ cool! Speaking of cool, Robert Downey Jr. is back as the über billionaire industrialist Tony Stark, giving Chris Bale’s Bruce Wayne a run for his money.

The story picks up exactly where the first Iron Man left off, with the world now aware of his dual life as the armored superhero Iron Man, Stark faces pressure from the government, the press and the public to share his technology with the military. Unwilling to let go of his invention, the genius engineer, along with his secretary Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), and personal pilot/confidant James “Rhodey” Rhodes (Don Cheadle) must forge new alliances — and confront powerful enemies. We’ve got three new villains this time, with the fierce Russian weapons-maker Whiplash as the ringleader, Sam Rockwell as Stark’s industrialist rival Justin Hammer, and Scarlett Johansson as the mysterious Black Widow (another Russian character).

Emily & the comic's Black Widow

In case you didn’t know, there were some casting switcheroos that went on, with the obvious one being Cheadle replacing Terrence Howard as Rhodey a.k.a. War Machine (I personally prefer Howard in this role, but whatever), and Johansson replacing the originally cast Emily Blunt as Black Widow. Blunt expressed her disappointment over losing the role in this Filmonic article, oh well, she’s not the only one, I’d rather see her than Scarlet any day! The British actress would be a much better fit (physically and otherwise), plus she’s just a much better actress IMO.

In any case, who cares about the rest of the cast, the real star is always RDJ. He fits his character like a glove, or his metal suit I should say, which looks even sleeker now. The scene with a troop of Iron Man clones suddenly popping up everywhere kind of reminds me of Transformers though, I can’t tell which is which with all those metals clanging! But even with all the off-the-charts action, we’ve also got some witty dialog that I dig about this movie. Suffice to say the trailer gets me psyched to see all the fun flix that comes in every Summer, Oscar be darned, just bring on the action!

What about you, readers? Are you as psyched about this one as I am?

  1. I don’t think Emily Blunt will want to be part of the movie once the actual final product comes out anyway. It will probably be like Rachel McAdams in Sherlock Holmes, a completely extraneous character that will get murdered in the cutting room (and/or the script in this case). Blunt doesn’t need that kind of publicity.

This trailer looks awesome although it really looks like Favreau piled on the excesses. Can’t wait for May!

    1. Yeah you’re probably right, I’m happy with Scarlet being left in the cutting room floor. Did you notice how obvious that it was her stunt double doing the action stuff? She’s much more athletic than Scarlet and doesn’t look like her at all! I’d rather see Blunt in more dramatic fare, or even comedy, she is one of my fave actress after Blanchett! As for excess, yeah it seems a bit much but hey it’s a superhero flick in every sense of the word, so naturally. Besides, it can’t be more ‘excessive’ than Clash of the Titans… not that I’m complaining 😉

  2. Is it May yet???

BTW, the throwaway detail that always gives me a smile is seeing my hometown paper – The Toronto Star – front and centre on Whiplash’s collage board of Stark clippings.

    1. I know!! But I’m excited for April 2 for Clash of the Titans, bring on all the superheroes! 🙂

That’s cool that they have your town paper in there, but you must be used to seeing your city in Hollywood movies since they shoot a lot of movies up there. My friend was so happy seeing different parts of the Twin Cities in A Serious Man.

Springtime and mindless comic book movies go well together. Can’t wait to go see that one on a warm evening.

Might be hard to keep the visuals as novel as the first installment. The villains may have to pick up some of the slack round 2. I have faith Mickey will do his part, what a bad-ass!

SQUEE. Also, didja see the new Robin Hood trailer? Didja didja didja? Totally stoked for mid-May.

Also, I can’t believe that anyone would prefer Terrance Howard to Don Cheadle in any way, shape, or form. But that’s why we all have opinions, right? 🙂

    1. I’m such a slacker, I saw that there was a new RH trailer but didn’t get around to seeing it. I saw it just over lunch and WOW! That’s much improvement over the teaser. Stoked is the word, I know people are comparing this with Gladiator (Robin does look like Maximus with that haircut) but I take that as a good thing because it has that ‘epic’ feel to it. The similarities ends there I think. Mark looks good of course, and the always-phenomenal Blanchett looks fierce (“If you as much as touch me, I’ll sever your manhood!” – yikes!!)

As for preferring Howard over Cheadle, I’m talking about in this role as Rhodey. I like Cheadle, and arguably he’s the better actor of the two, but I thought Howard had a nice rapport with RDJ in the first one that I’d rather see more of. Oh well… it’s a tiny gripe really as the rest of it looks awesome!!

      May can’t come soon enough!

  5. You don’t like Scarlett? But she’s so hot?! I don’t like that she lost her curves for this movie because she didn’t like herself in that suit. Thats just silly…the only reason why we watch her is because of her curves…never mind.
I’m not a big Blunt fan…maybe I haven’t seen her in enough stuff. But she seems incredibly arrogant to me. No idea why.

    1. You know I used to like her when she first started out in Lost in Translation, but she just seems so … what’s the word, overexposed? I haven’t heard about her losing weight for the role, but it does look like the role requires her to be more athletic though. But yeah, I think she does have nice curves that we need to see more of in Hollywood instead of those stick figures!

I didn’t know about the Blunt/Johansson switch-up, but it makes me sad … Blunt has so much more talent (I think) than Scarlet does.

    1. My sentiment exactly, M. Blunt does come across as arrogant like Vanessa said, but I think she’s probably just shy … sometimes they come across as aloof or anti-social. Regardless, I think she is a fine actress.
