Random Thoughts: Golden Globes, Stephen Kings ’09 Flix Picks, NBC Chuck

A completely random post for a change as I don’t really have any new review nor time to finish some of my draft posts tonight.

  • Butler clean-shaven at 2009 Golden Globes

Golden Globes Awards is coming to our telly in 2 weeks, January 17 to be exact (and I’ve checked with hubby that the Vikings game is on at noon so I get the TV at night. YAY!). I don’t have much gripes about the nominations this year, partly because I haven’t watched some of the flicks nominated, but some of the picks are kind of expected. Ok, I take that back, I did balk at Julia Roberts being nominated for Duplicity, I mean I don’t think her acting was any different from her other performances, plus it was a rather meh flick on top of it. I’m also disappointed that Sharlto Copley’s great performance in District 9 was snubbed. But I am glad to see Gordon-Levitt nominated for (500) Days, Robert Downey Jr. for Sherlock Holmes and Helen Mirren for The Last Station (haven’t seen the flick but she’s one fine actress!). Pleasantly surprised to see Avatar shortlisted for Best Picture, a harbinger for the biggest award show coming in March?
    ….
In any case, it’s just announced today that Gerry Butler is going to be presenting, as well as the other two newly-added presenters, Mel Gibson & Sophia Loren. Hmmm, those three in a movie together would be kind of cool, bizarre but cool. I digress. The rest of the presenters include Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry, Colin Farrell, Matthew Fox, Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, Mickey Rourke and Sam Worthington (yet another reason for me to watch this year’s telecast). Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio will present the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Cecil B. DeMille Award to Martin Scorsese for his “outstanding contribution to the entertainment field.” Hosted by crazy Brit Ricky Gervais, it should be a rambunctiously fun show.

  • I’ve been reading a lot of site/blog Top Movies of 2009 picks the last few days. Perhaps one of the most peculiar picks come from horror author/EW columnist Stephen King. He cited his reasons for each one on EW.com gallery, but if you just want to get a quick glance without having to click the arrow ten friggin’ times, see below:
    ….…………….
    ……………. 10. 2012
    ……………. 9. Fantastic Mr. Fox
    ……………. 8. The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3
    ……………. 7. Law Abiding Citizen
    ……………. 6. District 9
    ……………. 5. The Reader
    ……………. 4. Disgrace
    ……………. 3. The Road
……………. 2. The Last House on the Left
    ……………. 1. The Hurt Locker
    ….
I guess we shouldn’t be surprised coming from him? Still, 2012?? WOW! Interesting to see Law Abiding Citizen on this list (probably the only top ten list you’ll find this movie). King quipped, “… this version’s script is wound tight and clever enough to draw blood.” Hmmm, it probably won’t end up on my own ‘Best Of’ list, but still it was a pretty good movie that isn’t quite as bad as the critics made it out to be. The only one I agree with here is District 9, The Hurt Locker seems to be a critics’ fave I’m still curious to see, but his #2 and #4 picks I probably won’t bother with.
  • Now, I very recently caught a couple of episodes of Chuck. I find it surprisingly funny and entertaining, no wonder it’s been a critical and fan favorites the last couple of seasons. To those of you not familiar with the series, the main guy Chuck is an “average computer-whiz-next-door” who receives an encoded e-mail from an old college friend now working in the CIA; the message embeds the only remaining copy of the world’s greatest spy secrets into Chuck’s brain. The reluctant, bumbling super spy is played with endearing charm by Zachary Levi, who reminds me of Friends‘ Ross at times, but better looking. Since I haven’t watched any show at all since Three Rivers was canceled, I think I’ll catch the 2-hour season premiere of season 3 this Sunday 8pm/CT on NBC.
    ….
Just check out the guest stars line up (from CinemaBlend): Angie Harmon (NBC’s Law & Order), who will play Sydney, an enemy operative; Brandon Routh (Superman Returns), who is set to play CIA Agent Daniel Shaw; Robert Patrick (Terminator 2: Judgment Day) will play Colonel Keller, a soldier and spy from Casey’s past; Kristin Kreuk (Smallville), who will portray Hannah — a potential love interest for Chuck; Armand Assante (Judge Dredd) as dictator Premier Goya, who is the target of an assassin; Steve Austin (WWE Smackdown!) will portray Hugo Panzer, who becomes entangled in Chuck’s first solo mission; and Vinnie Jones (Snatch) will play Carl Stromberg, an arms dealer. WOW, impressive lineup indeed. I quite like Brandon as Supes, interesting that Kristin who plays Lana in Smallville also guest stars. I’ll definitely be on the couch with popcorn come Sunday nite!
    ….
Btw, all you James Bond geeks out there, does the CHUCK series dvd cover remind you of something? Take a peek if you’re so inclined.

Thought I’d mention a cool show I just discovered over the holidays via Netflix streaming: Party Down. It’s about a bunch of struggling actors, comedians, writers working for a catering service while waiting for their big break. Pretty damn funny for a half hour show. Creator, director and main writer Rob Thomas also created the now defunct but decent Veronica Mars…

  2. I very much like the list of presenters for the Golden Globes, some of my favorite actors/actresses are going to be there, so looking good for the actual show and making me want to watch it even more.

    1. I usually don’t bother watching Oscars or Golden Globes even though I like movies, but I’m kinda excited this year. Yeah, I must admit I’d watch for the presenters too, and it’s a good material to blog about the next day!

Stephen King is one weird dude. You’d think that would go without saying generally, but then he goes and picks crap like “2012” and — what the f? — “The Last House on the Left” as two of the best 2009 had to offer. That’s crazier than Jack Torrance, is what that is.

    1. Yep, goes without saying he’s a peculiar dude, but to be expected of course. I think people should say ‘Favorite’ instead of ‘Best of’ as this type of list is so personal and we may like something despite a quality of a movie. I for one don’t always like what the critics regard as the best, but it doesn’t mean my taste is ‘poorer’ than theirs.

  4. I’m a huge fan of Chuck! The 2 hr season premiere and the 3rd episode yesterday night were just like his brother in law, AWESOME. If you’ve only caught a couple of episodes, I must insist you watch the first 2 seasons before hopping on season 3 or you’ll suffer major spoilage! Watch Chuck fall for Sarah from the beginning. I guarantee you’ll get hooked. 🙂

    1. Oh, glad you like that, too! I don’t know if I’ll have time to catch up on the previous 2 seasons but I’m already hooked on the show after watching the first episode on iTunes. Chuck’s brother in-law is fine but the reason I watch Chuck is well… Chuck! Zach Levi is sooo darn charming, I guess I have a thing for the tall, dark & handsome, especially if he’s FUNNY to boot! I love how bumbling and dorky he is, and his love-struck face when he’s with Sarah is just adorable! I was kinda disappointed Brandon Routh wasn’t on yet though, I really want to see him on last nite’s episode as I thought he was gonna be at the 2-hr premiere.

      1. Oh no, no, no, nooo! You gotta make the time to catch up! That’s like Watching The Return of the King and forsaking The Fellowship of the ring and The Two Towers or watching The Return of the Jedi without A New Hope or The Empire Strikes Back! GASP It’s just wrong! You’d miss the beginning of it all. You’d miss why Chuck IS one of the best shows on TV. You gotta see from the start when Agent Walker first walks into Chucks life. You gotta see why Morgan IS the worlds best friend. See Jeffster rock out! Chuck & Casey’s endless banter. Morgan trying to escape the grasp of Anna Wu! lol

I don’t mean to be annoying, but as a lover of those wonderful moving images that entertain us, you owe it to yourself to grab your schedule and make time to Chuck out from the start. 🙂

Have a great day or night.

P.S. When I said the episodes were AWESOME as Chuck’s brother in law, I meant that Devon’s nickname in the show is “Captain Awesome.” Clearly nobody’s more awesome than Chuck. 🙂

P.S.S Again, didn’t mean to make you roll your eyes and think “Will this guy quit already?” 😀

    2. Ok, ok, I think you’ve convinced me, Siegfried 🙂 They’re all available on Hulu anyway so I might check ’em out there. My hubby told me about the Suburbs episode that’s super funny but we couldn’t find it anywhere. If you know where to find it, pls let me know. I did see the part when Sarah first met Chuck, that’s the first time I ever knew about this series. That Bryce guy is a hottie but Zach Levi definitely’s got the charm that goes beyond looks. I also love Adam Baldwin as Casey, he’s a riot in Firefly. You know who he reminds me of? Jamie Bamber, BSG’s Lee Adama. He’s like the bigger, taller & burly-er version of him.

He..he.. I dig your enthusiasm, dude, I get really passionate about stuff I like, too. Keep ’em coming!! 🙂

      1. Baldwin as Casey also reminds me of Firefly’s Jayne! They’re both equally grumpy lol Oh, I wish they’d bring Firefly back. Or make another movie. I’d die happy. lol 😀

Chuck Versus the Suburbs coming right up!

The WB has episode 1 – 6 from Season 1, since Hulu only has the pilot:
        http://www.thewb.com/shows/chuck

Hulu had the entire Season 2, before landing on DVD. Now it only has episode 18 – 22, which I guess it’s cool ’cause the Season 2 finale was insanely awesome!

        Take care 🙂

        1. Oh, I think he’s totally channeling Jayne as Casey, the wisecrackin’ tough guy we all love. I think a Firefly movie is in the works, I’m sure Nathan Fillion will tweet about it, I follow him there & he’s a pretty prolific twitterer, though not as much as Simon Pegg!

Ohhh thank you for the episode, I’ll watch that tonight, THANK YOU, dude! I’ll try to get through the rest of the episodes but I hardly have time to watch TV normally, but Chuck is worth making time for 🙂

Let's start a conversation
