Trio Trailer Spotlight of female-directed + female-led movies: Materialists, Bonjour Tristesse, Ballerina – all released in June

Posters of Materialists, Ballerina, Bonjour Tristesse

We’re just days away from June, so the Summer Movie season is heating up! While temps have been trending lower than normal here in Minnesota (normal high is early 70s), it’s going to be much warmer later this week. It might even hit 90 by June 1st!

Well, I haven’t done a trailer post in a while, so today seems as good a day as any to do so. Interestingly, the last time I did a trio trailer spotlight included Past Lives, and Celine Song is back with another dreamy romance. So let’s get to it, shall we?

MATERIALISTS

A young, ambitious New York City matchmaker finds herself torn between the perfect match and her imperfect ex.

Oh how lovely it must be to be Dakota Johnson. She’s dating the lead singer of one of the best British bands ever (Coldplay’s Chris Martin), and she goes to work kissing two of the best-looking internet boyfriends on the planet: Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans.

It’s a fantastic cast, but the main draw for me is Celine Song, as I absolutely adore Past Lives (I gave it a rare 5 stars). She wrote and directed this one, so I have such high hopes for this rom-com. How does one follow up such a perfect film, no pressure, Miss Song!

Materialists arrives in theaters on Friday, June 13.

BONJOUR TRISTESSE

Cécile’s relaxing summer with her father in the south of France is upended by the arrival of the enigmatic Anne.

Bonjour Tristesse 2025

I just saw this trailer today. Bonjour Tristesse means ‘Greetings, Sadness’ in English. It’s the title of a 1954 novel by Françoise Sagan that was adapted into a film by Otto Preminger in 1958, starring Jean Seberg and David Niven. Lily McInerny is portraying Cécile, and Claes Bang plays her father, while Chloë Sevigny is playing Anne (perfect casting, I’d say).

This version, directed by Durga Chew-Bose, a Canadian writer and filmmaker, presents a contemporary adaptation of the tale, set in today’s world while incorporating some retro vibes. Now, I haven’t seen the original, so I have to check that one soon!

Bonjour Tristesse is in select theaters now and will arrive on digital nationwide on Friday, June 13.

BALLERINA

An assassin trained in the traditions of the Ruska Roma organization sets out to seek revenge after her father’s death.

Ballerina - Ana de Armas

Ever since Ana de Armas stole scenes in No Time To Die, it’s about time she headlines her own action movie. Too bad Len Wiseman is the director, though. His last action feature, the Total Recall remake, was terrible. Word has it that Chad Stahelski stepped in as the director and had to rework a big chunk of the film since he wasn’t satisfied with how Ballerina was turning out. Fans of John Wick have high expectations for the choreography in these action flicks, and maybe Wiseman just couldn’t meet that standard.

In any event, this film takes place between John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019) and Chapter 4 (2023). That explains why Keanu Reeves is in this movie. Anjelica Huston reprises her role as head of the Ruska Roma crime organization. Ian McShane is back as hotelier Winston. Sadly, this is the final role for Lance Reddick before his unexpected death.

Ballerina arrives in theaters on Friday, June 6.

What do you think of these trailers? Are you anticipating these movies?

  1. I’d like to see all 3 of them although I’m iffy about The Materialists as I liked Past Lives but I didn’t think it was that great. Ballerina is something I’ll likely watch on streaming as I love Ana de Armas and the John Wick stuff but it’s directed by Len Wiseman who I think is mid. Then there’s Bonjour Tristesse as I have seen the 1958 Otto Preminger film with David Niven and Jean Seberg which I thought was great. I’ll wait for these on streaming.

MATERIALISTS looks like it’s a film that would make a lot of money back in the 80s and 90s. Let’s see how it does in current time. Romance films just isn’t that big of draw anymore.

BALLERINA looks good but apparently, the movie isn’t being well received by the people who saw it in early screenings. Which explains why Lionsgate has slowed down their promotion for the movie. I’ll wait to see the reviews, if it doesn’t have a lot of good reviews, then I’ll wait until it comes out on streaming.

  3. Ballerina, I’ve been waiting! Yes, the choreography better be GREAT, else it will be second rate.

I enjoyed the trailer, a lot! I too am saddened about  Lance Reddick. I am glad he made this movie though. He added a nice chunky bit to the JW movies.

Materialists, I like the trailer a lot. It looks like it could be quite entertaining.

Bonjour Tristesse is how I felt about the trailer. Perhaps Au Revoir Tristesse is more what I felt.

I love old movies. This one does not linger in my memory, like many others, so I checked out an old trailer. Thought you might like it, Ruth! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ii5Aoqy7ggA

    1. I LOVE the choreography of the John Wick movies so yeah, I have high expectations about Ballerina. Nice to see a woman as the lead this time around.

Materialists just look so dreamy with dreamy guys 😍

Ahah, Au Revoir Tristesse has a nice ring to it! I wanna see the original film, Jean Seberg is so gorgeous and I like Deborah Kerr as well. I love Seberg in Godard’s Breathless and Kerr in Beloved Infidel with my classic icon boyfriend Gregory Peck (oh I was so obsessed with him like a decade ago, I still own a bunch of his films on DVD!) 😀 Thanks for sending that old trailer, I can’t wait to watch that!

      1. Yes, Goodbye Sadness is wanted and needed.

        Gregory… he is quite dreamy.
That’s the thing with movies. They freeze a person in a moment of time. They are forever that age in that movie.

        Brando in “On The Waterfront”
Vivien in “Gone With the Wind”
        Elvis in “Jailhouse Rock”
        Tommy Lee in “US Marshalls”
        Bruce Willis in “Die Hard”

        and Rock Stars, too!
I guess Jim Morrison “Doors”to me, would be like a Gregory Peck to you.

The Trailer is very cool. It has a commentary guy.

        1. You’re so right about stars being ‘frozen’ in time… I adore Vivien in GWTW, I still need to see On The Waterfront but I think Marlon is hottest ever in Streetcar Named Desire 😍

Jim Morrison is very sexy indeed, Gregory is more of a refined gent, ahah.
