Golden Globes 2025 recap – Demi, Stan, Shōgun, The Brutalist, Flow, etc. – winner highlights 🏆 + favorite moments of the night ⭐

Happy post-Golden Globes Monday! Did you watch the telecast? I didn’t start watching until about 25 minutes in as my attention was divided by the big game between MN Vikings vs. Detroit Lions that’s on at the same time. Sadly Vikings lost tonight after 9 straight victories so we didn’t clinch the NFC championship 😦

But hey, for movie fans, there are jeers and cheers as well with the Golden Globes. I didn’t watch host Nikki Glaser‘s monologue, I only caught the ‘Ozempic’s biggest night’ bit that made me laugh. Not sure if the rest of it is any good but she seems pleasant enough. Her Conclave-themed rendition of “Pope-ular” from Wicked is quite amusing.

I forgot to mention this bit that made me laugh halfway through the show. Glaser put up a leaderboard to keep track of everyone who got a shout-out during the acceptance speeches. It shows that the cast and crew racked up 11 mentions, moms came in second with a good amount of love, while Access Hollywood TV host Mario Lopez got a nod too. However, one notable absence was “God, creator of the universe,” Glaser quipped, “No surprise in this Godless town.” Spot on there, Nikki!

As far as the presenters go, it’s a hit-and-miss, per usual. I don’t know what Seth Rogen was on about, and Vin Diesel seems rather out of place even though it made sense that he presented the silliest award that the Golden Globes’ voters put together 😀 There was a hint of a truce between him and Dwayne Johnson though with a simple ‘Hi Dwayne…’

I do have to say I was moved by Jon M. Chu‘s speech when he and the Wicked team came to the stage to receive the award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. I love this part so much ‘… we can still make art that is a radical act of optimism’ and even referenced his own film as he championed fellow artists and filmmakers ‘…to not give up but to rise up, take the road off the yellow brick road and maybe discover we can fly.’ Whew!! It’s definitely one of the most inspiring speeches I’ve ever heard during award season.

Speaking of memorable moments, it took me a while to recover from Andrew Garfield‘s glorious appearance along with a radiant Kerry Washington, the world practically swooned the moment he put on his Clark-Kent glasses [fan self]

FAVORITE WINS OF THE NIGHT

While not all the movies/performers I championed ended up winning (I was rooting for Wicked to win Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy that went to Emilia Pérez), let’s focus on the positives, these are some of my favorite wins and highlights from the night.

goldenglobes2025-shogun

Firstly, congrats to Shōgun for winning Best Television Series – Drama AND for the MVPs of the series: Hiroyuki Sanada + Anna Sawai + Tadanobu Asano (in that order) for winning their respective acting awards, woot!! I love the speeches of all three which somehow reflect the personalities of the characters they’re playing… Sanada is composed and solemn just like Lord Toranaga, while Asano is more exuberant, just like Yabushige 😀 Asano’s speech and unbridled enthusiasm is so adorable:

Meanwhile, the classy Anna Sawai kept her speech short and sweet… I love her tribute to the legendary Kathy Bates who’s also a big fan of hers.

Though I haven’t seen The Substance as I don’t have the stomach for extreme gore, I am thrilled for Demi Moore for winning Best Actress (I didn’t realize the movie is a comedy??) In any case, I was floored by her speech that she had never won anything as an actor in her 30+ years of career, wow!! Screw that producer who told her she’s a ‘popcorn actress’ (whatever that means!) which made her think she’s unworthy of any acting accolades, well she proved him wrong tonight!

Flow-movie
I’m so thrilled that the Latvian animated feature FLOW is the first indie animated film to win Best Animated Film at the Golden Globes!! “Thank you for embracing our little cat film,” director Gints Zilbalodis said at the end of the speech, aww!! It’s the little movie that could, as the film only had a budget of around $6 million (barely covered the catering for a Disney or Dreamworks animated productions!!) Zilbalodis said that the film had no deleted scenes, and everything they filmed ended up on the screen, wow!! I’m rooting they’d get an Oscar nomination for Best Animation and even Best International Feature category!

Thrilled that Sebastian Stan won Best Male Actor in Musical/Comedy, one of the two awards he was up for. He was excellent in A Different Man and I love that he shared the award with director Aaron Schimberg and his co-star Adam Pearson, while also calling for the end of ignorance and discomfort around disability and disfigurement.

As an immigrant, I love that there’s a bit of a theme around being the children of immigrants as Stan dedicated his award to his mother who moved to the US from Romania in search of a better life.  Later in the evening, Adrien Brody, who won for Best Actor in Motion Picture – Drama also thanked his mother who was a Hungarian immigrant. He’s said that he drew inspiration from her for his role in The Brutalist. I do think Brody’s speech was way too long though… I think award winners ought to always remember that brevity is the soul of wit.

Speaking of The Brutalist, this is one of the most predictable wins of the night, but one I was rooting for. Brady Corbet won Best Director and even he knew he’d win as he prepared a speech. It was a comprehensive, gracious speech, but the bit that caught me was that he gave a shout-out to Aubrey Plaza who’s recently lost her husband, indie filmmaker Jeff Baena. I can’t remember anyone else mentioning them, so that’s very classy of Corbet to be thinking of his friends during a big moment in his career.

Hope you enjoyed this Golden Globes summary. What are YOUR thoughts on last night’s event?

  1. There is no truce between Vin Diesel and the Crock. That’s just Vin little-broing that insecure, oversaturated, steroid-driven bitch as the Crock had to crawl back to the Fast & Furious franchise because his career is tanking.

I am happy for Sebastian Stan, Demi Moore, the people of Shogun, Keiran Culkin, and Zoe Saldana. I’m happy that NIN won… AGAIN! (still waiting for that double-bill dream-tour of NIN & Radiohead). It was nice of Brady Corbet to give a shout-out to Aubrey as I feel awful for her.

    1. Ahah, your disdain for the Crock knows no bounds! I think both of those guys are so darn cocky that the ‘feud’ is basically two giant egos clashing.

Yeah, I was thinking of you when NIN won, good for them, their music is ace! Plus I love that they thanked their family, that’s classy.

My heart goes out to Aubrey as well, boy you’d think she’d get more shout-out last night, but only Corbet acknowledged her loss.

  2. Egads! I forgot to watch, Ruth. The Globes haven’t been around for awhile, so they slipped my mind.

Honestly, I was drawing and had a 20 year old Denzel movie on. Most enjoyable.

Of everything you mentioned in this post, FLOW – that’s # 1 on my must see list.

I also am surprised that this was Demi’s first win. I do like black humour, but gore humour is a bit hard for me. Still, hooray for Demi!

Next year – The Golden Globes – I won’t forget!

    1. Hey Resa, don’t beat yourself up that you didn’t watch. I kind of split my attention between that and the Vikings game, LOL! Doing a drawing and watching an old Denzel movie sounds fun, which one was it?

FLOW is an adorable movie!! I don’t mind seeing it again as that cat is so cute! Yeah it’s crazy that Demi has never won before, but what she said about the producer telling her that she’s a ‘popcorn actress’ is very telling about the industry. I don’t think I could handle the amount of gore of The Substance though 🙈

      1. I was fun! The movie was “Out of Time”, pretty okay. I hadn’t seen it before.

I like Denzel a lot, and he’s a real pro. So even if not the best movie, he’s still on the money.

        Yeah.. no gore for me.
I do like John Wick movies though. Yeah, lots of killing and blood, but they evade gore.
The fight and shoot out sequences are so beautifully choreographed, it blows me away.

I so know it’s all fake, and love working with stunt men.
Those movies should get awards for stunts.

How did I get on that?
AH, just about to go draw to John Wick 1. (bit of a crush on Keanu)
        xx

        1. Oooh young Denzel 😍 I haven’t seen it either, looks good! Yeah I like him too, a real pro and a nice guy to boot.

I LOVE the John Wick movies too! I agree, it’s a lot of shoot-outs, fight-scenes and crazy action but no gore, which I’m ok with. Even Die Hard movies are fun as it’s not gory. Based on what I read about The Substance, it’s just really gross as it shows close-ups of the wounds and stuff, a la David Cronenberg’s movies which I also cannot stomach.

Stunt men really deserve lots of credit, glad that SAG have a category for stunt team. Ahah, well what girl doesn’t have a crush on Keanu?? So gorgeous and the nicest guy in Hollywood apparently.

I didn’t know the show was on last night, I was too angry screaming at the screen at the Vikings for playing like they’ve never played football before. Lol!

Glad to see that Shogun was the big winner. I haven’t other movies or shows, I don’t really have any opinions about the winners or loers.

    1. Ivan was screaming at the tv too! Man, that was an awful performance, kind of embarrassing as there were tons of injuries in Lions team but they could still whopp our @$$!

Yeah SHOGUN wins were absolutely well deserved. I was hoping TOKYO VICE would get some love as that is also an excellent series, oh well.

The Lions is a good team but the stubbornness of our head coach is the reason they played so bad. The Lions kept blitzing and our QB was struggling, yet he refused to make adjustments. The Vikings should’ve been up 28-7 in the first quarter but offense can’t get into the end zone. It’s so frustrating! Rants over, now I’m focusing on the playoffs. The division title is not the goal, we want to win the Super Bowl. Lol!

I feel like Tokyo Vice ended years ago even though it ended last year. Ha ha.

  4. Oh Boo-Hoo, Vikings – at least you’re in the playoffs (grumbles the jaded Bengals fan) – We were switching back and forth from that game too. Lol Mario Lopez topping God on the acceptance speech mentions!

    1. Ahah well yeah I suppose it’s good that Vikings is still in the playoff but man, it was hard to watch the game.

I thought that ‘Godless town’ bit was spot on, overall I thought Nikki did a good job hosting.

  5. I thought Nikki did a decent job! I don’t usually love her style but overall I thought she did pretty well. I honestly wasn’t going to watch the globes dthis year but my employees were talking about how Jeremy Allen White was nominated for the Bear and so I had to tune in! Thank goodness I did, it was good to see that win!

    1. This was actually the first time I saw Nikki Glaser doing anything but I laughed at a few things she did, which was infinitely more than what Jo Koy did. I loved Jeremy Allen White in the first two seasons of The Bear, but I was hoping someone else would win this time though.
