FX Shōgun leads EMMY 2024 nominations – The Full List of Nominees + 5 Things I’m Most Excited About

emmys-2024

This marks the first time I blog about EMMY nominations in a couple of years because normally I don’t watch that much TV. Well, the past year I managed to watch quite a bit of them to actually be excited that some of my favorites got nominated.

FX network must be throwing a huge party as it nabs a total of 93 nominations, thanks to Shōgun leading this year’s nominations with 25 nods (woot!!), and a record-breaking 23 nods for its comedy series The Bear, the most in Emmy history.

Here are 5 things I’m most excited about this year:

1 )  I am THRILLED that EMMY voters didn’t just watch but appreciate the FX Shōgun series! So great to see the supremely talented Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai nab first-time nominations, Both are so fantastic in their respective roles and are the heart + soul of the series.

2 ) I’m glad that the stellar Japanese-led supporting cast isn’t overlooked, Tadanobu Asano as the sly, crafty Lord Yabushige got nominated. He’s quite the scene stealer of the show and quite hilarious, too! Takehiro Hira’s role isn’t as flashy but he is pretty good as Lord Ishido. Interesting to see he and fellow nominee Anna Sawai were both in AppleTV’s Monarch series, too!

3 ) I’ve been loving The Gilded Age, an even juicier period drama than Downton Abbey created by Julian Fellowes. Carrie Coon and the indomitable Christine Baranski are both nominated, yay!! I’d have loved to see Cynthia Nixon amongst the Best Supporting Actress noms, but she still has a chance in the next season! It’s been renewed for Season 3 but I’m still waiting with batted breath for the premiere date.

4 ) I didn’t think I’d ever be saying this but I’m excited that Selena Gomez finally nabs a nomination for her role as Mabel in Only Murders in the Building. She was previously nominated twice for a group Emmy Award, but she deserves to get an individual nom for her outstanding performance. I’ve come to enjoy watching her more and more on the show, and not just for her oh-so-enviable outfits!

5 ) If you haven’t watched AppleTV’s Slow Horses yet, well, move along swiftly and get on that! If you’re a fan of spy movies/series, it’s so worth your time! Thrilled to see Gary Oldman nominated for his hilarious role as the notorious Jackson Lamb, an obnoxious boss of dysfunctional MI5 agents. Jack Lowden absolutely deserves his nomination as he’s fantastic as agent River Cartwright, who often gets the brunt of Lamb’s wrath of insults.

In addition to the 5 listed above, I’m also excited to see so many acting nominees for The Crown, especially Claire Foy in Best Guest Actress. The one acting nom I’m not crazy about from that show is Dominic West as Prince Charles who I’ve always thought is miscast. Salim Daw As Mohamed Fayed on the other hand was very memorable in Season 5.

Well, what do YOU think of the 2024 EMMY Nominations?

18 thoughts on “FX Shōgun leads EMMY 2024 nominations – The Full List of Nominees + 5 Things I’m Most Excited About

  1. I’m fucking happy for Selena Gomez! I haven’t seen Only Murders in the Building except for a few clips but she is great. From being in Barney and shows on the Disney Channel to this. I’m elated! Ryan Gosling nominated for an Emmy. PLEASE!!!! GIVE HIM THE AWARD!!!!!!!

    1. Oh you should watch that series! It’s so much fun, and the unlikely trio of Martin Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez is hilarious!

Gosling is funny in this latest SNL skit, esp the Beavis & Butthead one. Speaking of SNL, Mikey Day should be the one nominated this year instead of Bowen Yang ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  2. Ted Saydalavong's avatar Ted Saydalavong

I’m not in the loop with these awards but it’s to see some of the shows I watched getting lots of nominations. Slow Horses is my favorite show right now. I didn’t think I was going to enjoy a show about a group of terrible spies but it’s hilarious and thrilling at the same time. Lol!

    1. Glad you’re watching SLOW HORSES! It’s a rare series that gets better and better with each season. I can’t wait for S4 coming in September. Perhaps it’s time I dedicate a post for that show!

  3. LOL! I get a weekly mail on your blog!

So, never mind my last question on the last comments.

I haven’t seen Slow Horses, but will. I’ll be watching everything I haven’t already seen. I feel it’s very important to watch everything that’s nommed in the categories I can vote in. Best Shows are all in my purview!

I really like The Bear, but it’s not really a comedy to me. Maybe I’m missing something? The lead actor is wildly appealing in his role.

Okay! Fab post, Ruth!!! Love it!

    1. Hey, no worries! I was about to saunter over to your blog and ask what your thoughts are about the noms. I’m still sad Tokyo Vice got nothing but thrilled for SHOGUN, so well-deserved!!

Slow Horses is a lot of fun as I love British humor and the cast is fabulous!! I’m a huge fan of Kristin Scott-Thomas and her outfits here are sharp, unlike Gary Oldman’s LOL (which is intentional as his character is such a slob!)

Yeah, the categorization of awards don’t always make sense. Remember when The Martian was nominated in comedy category at Golden Globes? [scratching my head]

      Thanks Resa!

      1. Lol, The Martian as a comedy. Someone had friends.
Are you going to do a costumes noms post?

Anyway Ruth, I will keep you posted as to when exactly voting begins, and what I’m up to!

I might have to mail if there’s something I don’t want to say in a public forum.

        1. Someone had friends!! LOL!

Y’know, I was thinking about doing a Costumes noms post, but I haven’t watched a lot of those that got nominated 😦 I might do a ‘spotlight’ post for The Gilded Age though because I adore the costumes.

P.S. Feel free to email me!! I’ve been meaning to email you about that passion project of mine too 😉

          1. Ahh, do 2 spotlights in 1 post(one for Shogun as well) and mention the others!!!!!!!
I’ll reblog with my 2 bits… and maybe some other Emmy Costume comments.

            Just a thought.

            1. Hey Resa!! That’s a fabulous idea, I would love to but I have no experience or much knowledge on costume design. Perhaps you’d be willing to do guest post on Shogun and The Gilded Age? Or do it on your blog and I will reblog them… whichever you prefer. Let me know what you think!

              1. Ahh, okay!
                Good thoughts!
Let me watch Gilded Age. I have actually worked in that period on a Canadian series “Road to Avonlea” designed by award winning designer of Opera, TV and film, Martha Mann. I learned a lot from her.

Also, I did a series “Highlander, The Raven” and designed some costumes from that era.
So I do have some background allowing me valid critique.

And don’t you know… my new Art Gown is being made from antique linens cottons and laces from exactly the Gilded Age period.
The were a gift from a blogger when she inherited her grandmother’s linen chest.

So, I just checked and I get it in my TV package. I’ll start with Season 2, because that is what’s up for Emmys.

I think you interviewing me is a great idea.
You would ask questions from the perspectives of a viewer who likes the show and the costumes.

Throw in some questions about Shogun… maybe too long, but we can see when we get there.

It’s a bit corny, but you could ask who I think will win.
                Here’s the NOMs https://www.emmys.com/awards/nominees-winners/2024/outstanding-costumes-for-a-period-fantasy-series-limited-series-or-movie

I’d have to watch 1 ep of Palm Royale and The New Look. I will be doing that anyway!

Anyway, let me watch a few episodes. I’ll email you when I’ve seen 3.

                Then I’ll reblog.

                1. Awesome, awesome!! Yes let’s do an interview post where I’ll ask you questions about this year’s nominees but focus specifically on Shogun and The Gilded Age. You can just watch 3 episodes of Season 2 as you said, that should suffice.

I’ll start thinking about the questions amd might include a BTS clip about costume design of both shows if I can find them on YouTube.

Oh I don’t think it’s corny to ask about who you think will win… after all you are an Emmy voter and you have extensive knowledge of the industry! I gotta check out your latest Art Gown post, can’t wait! 🤩

                  1. Okay, I watched 1 ep. last night. #2 tonight
I’ll need to rewatch an ep. of Shogun… so it’s fresh in my mind.
Others Noms for drama costume are
Winning Time – I watched season 1, but will watch 1 ep. of season 2.

                    The New Look
                    Palm Royale
I will watch 2 of each. I know the costumes will be great! UCH. They are on Apple TV, so I’ll have to watch on my computer via the Emmy Viewing Platform.
Okay – This will take me until next week.
Voting doesn’t begin until mid August, so we are good time wise.
                    🤩 – some fun!

Impressive lineup of nominees. I wish they had a cinematography award for Ripley. Such luscious, stunning and impeccably composed shots. You could just mute it and appreciate the visuals alone. Hats off to Robert Elswit.
