The Film Independent Spirit Awards were given out last night, Sunday, Feb 25, and as a film critic as well as a member of Film Independent, I’m thrilled for the 2024 award winners!! The show took place in Santa Monica, hosted by Aidy Bryant, as the final voting for the Oscars is still happening as we speak (voting closes tomorrow, Feb 27).
The Spirit Awards Ceremony is Film Independent’s largest annual fundraising gala, supporting their year-round efforts to champion and support diverse, inclusive, and innovative voices in visual storytelling. Here are some of the highlights:
I am especially happy to see PAST LIVES won Best Feature and first-time feature director Celine Song won Best Director!! I’ve been a champion for that film which I call beautifully spellbinding. I can’t wait to see what Song will tackle next!

A few of my favorites also won last night, woo hoo!! Delighted that Jeffrey Wright finally won an award for his lead performance in American Fiction!! As for Da’Vine Joy Randolph who deservedly won Best Supporting Performance, looks like she’ll joyfully sweep all of the Best Supporting Actress trophies all the way to the Oscars next month!!

I’m way out of the loop when it comes to awards in La La Land these days. When I paid attention to awards shows, back in the days, it was just Golden Globes and Oscars. Now there seems to be countless awards leading up to the Oscars.
I have yet to see Past Lives but it appears to be popular with a lot film people. Didn’t both Spielberg and Nolan said it’s one of their fave films from last year?
Yes!! Spielberg and Nolan sure have good taste in movies!
I’m over the moon about these winners. Past Lives was my favorite film last year and I’m so happy it finally got some recognition. It’s truly a masterpiece. A shame it won’t win any Oscars. Here’s why it resonated with me:

I missed the awards show but those are all fantastic winners!
I know, right? Glad to see Past Lives get the kudos it deserved!
