In the ever-evolving landscape of cinema, specific genres seem to ebb and flow in popularity, but one genre that continues to captivate audiences worldwide is romantic comedy. Despite the rise of blockbuster franchises and high-concept action films, rom-coms remain a beloved staple of the movie industry, offering audiences a delightful escape into the world of love, laughter, and happily-ever-afters. One recent release that has been making waves at the global box office this week is Anyone But You, a charming rom-com proving to be a hit with audiences worldwide.
The movie intends to surpass the two most successful romantic comedies of the post-pandemic era: The Lost City ($192 million global) and Ticket to Paradise ($172 million worldwide). With an estimated budget of $25 million, the movie received an extended cut for Valentine’s weekend in February. Its domestic box office has reached $85 million by now, and $189 million globally, according to box office of this week.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Will Gluck and starring the dynamic duo of Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, Anyone But You tells the story of two strangers who find themselves trapped in a series of comical mishaps as they navigate the unpredictable world of modern dating. With its winning combination of witty dialogue, heartfelt moments, and irresistible chemistry between the leads, the film has been winning the hearts of audiences and critics alike since its release.

But what exactly about Anyone But You has made it such a success at the global box office? Let’s take a closer look at some of the factors contributing to the film’s popularity and impressive performance at cinemas worldwide.
1) Captivating Storyline
At its core, Anyone But You is a classic romantic comedy with a modern twist. The film follows the journey of two unlikely protagonists who are brought together by fate and must overcome a series of obstacles to find their happily ever after. With its laugh-out-loud humor and heartfelt romance, the film offers something for everyone, making it a crowd-pleaser at the box office.
2) Stellar Cast
A strong cast can make or break a film, and Anyone But You boasts a talented pool of actors who bring characters to life with wit and charm. Sydney Sweeney shines as the lovable yet quirky protagonist, while Glen Powell delivers a standout performance as her charming love interest. The chemistry between the two leads is palpable, drawing audiences into their whirlwind romance and keeping them invested in the story from start to finish.
The impact of the movie’s popularity is evident, as Sony is showcasing Sweeney in its marketing for the next Madame Web. Netflix recently released Powell’s Hit Man trailer, which launched the two hottest stars of their generation. Before Anyone But You, both celebrities have contributed to successful ventures, but this raises the bar for them.
The same is true of director Will Gluck, who gained popularity with Easy A more than ten years ago and then with Friends with Benefits. However, since romantic comedy was losing popularity in theaters, he also decided to direct two Peter Rabbit films for Sony.

3) Universal Themes
At its core, Anyone But You explores universal themes of love, friendship, and self-discovery that resonate with audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Whether you’re a hopeless romantic or a skeptic when it comes to love, the film’s relatable characters and heartfelt moments will strike a chord with viewers, making it a memorable cinematic experience for all who watch it.
4) Positive Word-of-mouth
In today’s digital age, word-of-mouth can play a significant role in a film’s success, and Anyone But You has been generating buzz both online and offline since its release. Positive reviews from critics after a bumpy ride initially and glowing recommendations from audiences have helped spread the word about the film, drawing more moviegoers to theaters and contributing to its strong performance at the box office this week.
5) Global Appeal
While some films may need help to resonate with international audiences initially, Anyone But You has proven to be a hit globally by the passing of time. Its universal themes and relatable characters have transcended cultural boundaries, making it a success in global markets. From North America to Europe to Asia, audiences everywhere have fallen in love with the charming rom-com, cementing its status as a worldwide box office phenomenon.
Hence, with its winning combination of humor, romance, and heart, the film serves as a reminder of the enduring appeal of love stories on the big screen. So whether you’re a die-hard rom-com fan or simply looking for a feel-good movie to enjoy with friends and family, I recommend you check out this movie and experience the magic.

I’m just glad Sydney Sweeney is going to do fine since Madame Web is a colossal flop and could do other things. She is actually an excellent actress.
I’m not familiar with Sydney at all and will likely never see Madame Webb, glad I skipped the press screening of that!
She’s known mainly for Euphoria, the TV series on HBO.
Yeah, I’ve never seen that show but I know it’s popular.
This is a type of film that would be a huge hit back in the 80s and 90s, typically starring Julia Roberts or Sandra Bullock. It’s not the type of movie I watch but I’m glad it’s doing well at the box office. In the world of super heroes (thankfully that genre is dying down), super spies and other high concept genres, it’s nice to see that little film like this one is still being made and people are willing to go see it in theaters.
Of course it helps that both Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell are being hype up as the next big stars in LA LA Land. Lol!
Yeah those two actors are EVERYWHERE it seems. I’ve only seen Powell in Top Gun Maverick and he comes across as smug to me, ahah. Not sure yet about that Twister movie he’s headlining either, but in terms of rom-coms, I for one am glad this genre is far from dying!
I just remember Powell from The Dark Knight Rises where he played the smug wall street guy who Bane smashed his head in during that scene. Lol! He didn’t appear in any big movie again until Maverick and he somehow blew up. He’s actually good in last year’s little seen film, Devotion. The studios thought with him and Jonathan Majors starring in a Lethal Weapon/Top Gun mashup, it would be a hit for them. Unfortunately, Majors personal issues came out and he’s cancelled and the film died a quite death. Ha ha!
Oh wow I had no idea Powell was in TDKR! Ahah well he looks smug so I guess that’s good casting 🤣 I’m tires of all these remakes but I’m sure the Lethal Weapons remake will happen with another actor pairing.
Great review! I’m not so keen to see this one because I’m not a fan of rom-coms. That being said, I love Glenn Powell who has become an underrated actor. Loved his performance in “Top Gun: Maverick”.
Hey Huilahi, this is a guest post so I haven’t seen this either. I must say I’m not all that eager to watch it, though I agree with you Glen was great in Maverick.
