Weekend Roundup: Trailers aired during SuperBowl, San Diego Comic Con, etc.

Did you watch the big game? Well, the Packers won the SuperBowl, congrats to Aaron Rogers & his team, seems like they had it from the start. I was in front of the tv but not exactly watching the game, I was downstairs keeping my hubby company mostly to watch the trailers and commercials. As ScreenRant‘s Vic Holtreman said in his tweet, “I really wish the Super Bowl would stop interrupting the great trailers and commercials.” Ha!

One of the most notable trailers was the Captain America teaser that seemingly everyone’s been waiting for:

It went by really fast and all I could remember was Chris Evans’ powerful um, man boobs pecs. Maybe because he was so ridiculously skinny at the beginning before he went inside the super-soldier making machine. It looks so heavily CGI-ed as Evans obviously didn’t pull a Christian Bale by yo-yo-ing 60+ pounds for this role. Anyways, this movie isn’t one I’m hugely anticipating this year, I’m going to see how the reviews pan out before heading out to the theater. There were more than a dozen trailers total that aired last night, you can see ’em all on Cinematical. Most of them weren’t all that memorable, maybe ’cause there are so many coming at you one after another. The slightly more revealing Super 8 trailer looks pretty intriguing though not exactly on my must-see list, while the other marvel movie THOR still hasn’t impressed me.

Which movie trailer and/or commercial was your favorite?

Well, on Saturday, I spent most of my day trying to register for this year’s San Diego Comic Con. For the third time in a row, the ticketing system crashed again! Back in December, they halted registration for the second time around with only a handful of people able to get tickets. Despite hiring a new ticket sales web site TicketLeap and a month to figure out the problem, the dreaded ‘currently over capacity’ issues still plagued the system. If you’re on Twitter on Saturday, #sdcc was trending for hours filled with people protesting, cussing in frustration. It took me about 3+ hours and about 300+ browser refresh before I finally got the tickets for Thursday and Friday, unfortunately the Saturday badges had been sold out 😦 Oh well, I guess two days is better than nothing. This will be the first time I’ll be at the largest comic convention in the world but I can’t wait to see what’s in store come next July. Will Zack Snyder and the new Superman Henry Cavill be there on Hall H? Chris Nolan and his Dark Knight Rises crew? Man, it’s only February and I’m already over excited!

Has anybody been at SDCC? If so, any tips for a first timer?

This weekend was pretty slow in the movie-watching department, but on our Girls Movie Night on Friday, we ended up watching Casino Royale instead of the Keira Knightley period drama The Duchess, which we had agreed upon weeks ago. It started out when one of my girlfriends said she wanted to see something of an action movie and the fact that she has NEVER seen a Bond movie in her entire life. We all kinda looked at her in aghast, but interestingly enough, all of my girlfriends had never seen Casino Royale, either. Good thing I have the dvd, and though I’ve seen it several times, I didn’t mind seeing it again. That banter on the train between Bond and Vesper is still one of my favorite scenes! Funny that on Friday’s post, Prairiegirl and Aiden commented they’d be watching a certain Bond film for the first time, too.

Coincidentally, on Chinese New Year weekend, the movie that arrived on Netflix was Zhang Yimou’s HERO with Jet Li. But with the hoopla over the Comic-con tickets, SuperBowl and the fact that we spent Saturday AM painting our wall in our entertainment room, we still haven’t got around to watching it. I didn’t have my weekend roundup post last week or I’d have shared the fact that we just scored a new 55-inch SONY BRAVIA HX800 for more than half the price of the original, as the store we bought it from just filed Chapter 11. Good thing we bought it when we did a week ago, as now the price went up $500 bucks! We painted the wall where the unit hangs with a dark color so when the lights are dimmed, the frames of the TV kinda blends in nicely with the background. So anyway, that’s my weekend scoop, hope yours was a good one.

So, what movie(s) did you end up seeing this weekend?

  1. Cool. Looks like fun. I saw How To Train Your Dragon yesterday, couldn’t help thinking of you every time Mssr Butler grunted in ‘Viking’ 🙂

  2. Ted S

The only 30 second trailer/tv spot that impressed me was Aliens & Cowboys, I’m actually looking forward to it now. The others were pretty lame and also I thought this year’s commercials were quite awful, I didn’t like a single one of them. Can’t believe all these companies spent so much money on such poor quality of work.

Since my copy of Alien Anthology-Blu-ray arrived earlier in the week, I watched Aliens and Alien 3 over the weekend. I wish I could only buy those two since I don’t really like Alien and Alien: Resurrection was awful.

Have fun at the Comic Con, I’m pretty sure that Nolan and Snyder will be there to plug their big budgeted superhero flicks. Well I take that back, Nolan might not be there since he likes to keep his films in down low before they open. But I’ll be surprised if Snyder is not there though.

    1. I missed that during the SB but the first trailer was really cool, too. Can’t wait for that one though initially it wasn’t on my radar. As for most of them, I agree, I mean Transformers w/ that Victoria’s Secret model looking baffled in the midst of all that explosion is just plain idiotic.

That’s too bad only two of your Alien box set are good, what a bummer.

Yeah I’m excited for Comic-con, there are more superhero movies than ever these days so I’m sure there”ll be plenty to see and do.

    1. Yeah, those two are probably some of the most memorable ones. Looking forward to seeing HERO this week, I’m sure it’ll be a visual feast, but hoping the story is good, too.

    1. Good advice, Rich. Even among a handful of my wish list, I don’t expect to see ’em all. So what was your fave experience from Comic-con?

Thanks for the link, I’ll be sure to check it out.

      1. Mostly just seeing my friends. I used to do a comics blog before my film blog, and I had made a bunch of friends in the comics industry over the years.

  3. I thought CAPTAIN AMERICA spot was a bit flat, but I won’t complain since it gave me the look of Chris Evans seminaked. I also liked the Super Bowl spots for Roman Epic THE EAGLE, THOR, RIO, Spielberg’s TERRA NOVA, but the most interesting was for TRANSFORMERS III (even though I don’t watch that saga) and PRIEST (my most anticipated film this summer with Paul Bettany and Karl Urban) 🙂
You have all of these over at my official YouTube channel:

    1. A bit flat?? What? Mr Evans won’t like it that you call his mighty moobs flat, Dezzy 😀 😀

Unfortunately, I’m not keen on any of those trailers you mentioned, Dezzy. Stephen Lang looked exactly like Avatar’s Quatrich, just with a beard.

That’s cool you have your own YouTube channel!

Darn good choice in HERO, should look great on your new big screen TV.
Movies I watched this weekend, one was an obscure 1985 Kris Kristofferson movie “Trouble In Mind”, and the other was “The Pat Tillman Story”. Both pretty good.

    1. Yeah, can’t wait to see HERO. We saw House of Flying Daggers with our old 40″ 720p tv and it was already impressive.

Lots of reviews been popping up about the ‘Pat Tillman Story.’ Military-leaning movies are usually not my cup of tea, but it was really sad when I first heard news of his death.

  5. I wasn’t impressed with any of the trailers, although Super 8 kind of looks intriguing… Good game though. 🙂

I’m not sure if I have commented before, but I just wanted to say I have been reading your blog for a little while now and I really enjoy it. Keep up the great work!

    1. Well hello Eric, thanks for the kind words. Glad you’ve been readin’… hope I can get you to keep coming back 😀

Were you rooting for any of the teams on Sunday? The trailers are kinda weak this year, was hoping X-Men: First Class trailer will be shown… that’s one I’ve been anticipating for a while. There was even a trailer description circulating a while ago.

      1. I don’t like either team, but the Packers were the lesser of two evils, in my opinion. Glad they won.

I’m not sure what to think about the new X-Men movie. Come to think of it, I have only seen the first one so I have some catching up to do.

  6. I laughed reading your post. I felt the same watching the superbowl….Bring on the trailers! Stop showing the game! 🙂 I’m not a GB or Pittsburgh fan! ha!

The only movie I watched over the weekend was Great Expectations, starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke. My theaters temp shut down due to the weather! Glad to see you watched Bond!

    1. Yup, yup. The only reason I was in front of the tv was for the trailers/commercials… in fact, I was blogging the entire time.

Oh, what did you think of Great Expectations? I saw that a long while ago but can’t remember much of it. The only part I remember was Gwyneth wearing a green dress drinking from a water fountain while Ethan looks on.

Your theater was closed?? Well in MN we’re used to this friggin’ cold, so it was business as usual despite the subzero temp.

      1. Great Expectations was ok. It did kinda drag on during parts. I liked Robert DeNiro and wish he had been in the movie a little bit more.

Yeah, NM doesnt know how to be prepared for cold weather like that! ha. in a town 40miles away they are still on water rations…no water usage other than drinking!!

How exciting for you and Comic-Con!! I can’t wait for you to experience it!

  7. Where I am one who doesn’t read comic books, I sure enjoy the movies that are created from the comic stories. I am excited for Thor and Captain America. As for Transformers III and Super 8, ehh…I don’t know. Maybe it is because they are both made by JJ Abrams?? I am more annoyed with the two trailers I have seen for Transformers III since the one that is being shown in theaters, first makes you think there is a new Apollo movie. *sigh* Can anyone tell me how this third installment follows the storyline?

I one one who is very excited for the newest installment of Pirates. I am a JD fan and absolutely love him in the Captain Sparrow role and the other JD movie “Rango” looks cute, too.

Overall though, I was disappointed with this years Superbowl Commercials. Wish they would bring back the old retro Budweiser, Pepsi, and Doritos commercials from the mid-90s.

Such is life, as we don’t live in a perfect world. Have fun at Comicon! My friend is an intern for Marvel and has went the past couple of years to help at their booth.

Looking forward to your blogging from that venue! Perhaps your podcasting partner might teach you a few things that could come in handy. I would be interesting to “hear” about Comic Con as well as reading about it. Interviews anyone?!?!
