Hello October!! Here’s what I Watched in SEPTEMBER 2023 + My Pick of Movie Of the Month

sept-2023-viewing-recap

Happy October! I’m posting this during my annual trip to visit my family in New England. The colors haven’t quite peaked yet but still, the trek north towards White Mountains is still stunningly beautiful! We were blessed with warm and sunny Autumn day and despite the Canadian wildfires, the sky was as blue as can be.

Anyhoo, here’s what I watched last month:

NEW MOVIES

No mini reviews this week as I’m traveling so it’ll be a short post this time around. It’s not a terribly productive movie-watching in Sept, but for sure October will be a hectic one with Twin Cities Film Fest (TCFF) coming Oct. 19-28. In any case, here’s my recap:

(films indicated with * are directed by women)

TV SERIES

I’m still watching Star Wars: Ahsoka (here’s my review) + Only Murders In The Building (S3). I can’t wait to see the season finale of the latter, as to who the murderer is!

52filmsSo I’m continuing the 52 Films By Women challenge I started on International Women’s Day a few years ago. Per Women In Film (WIF) organization, the basic rules are simple: watch 52 films directed by women within the course of one year and share what you watched on social media, using the hashtag #52FilmsByWomen to spread the word, and get more people talking about the women filmmakers that don’t always get attention.

I was hoping to see five movies last month but only managed to see four movies #directedbywomen, well 3.75 as I saw Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret on the plane, but because of some technical difficulties, I still have 20 minutes left that I’ll finish on my flight back on Tuesday. A Million Miles Away, Goodbye, Petrushka, Sitting in Bars with Cake, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret I should be able to complete all 52 movies by the end of November!

September 2023 MOVIE OF THE MONTH

flora-and-son-poster

I LOVE John Carney movies! Once, Begin Again, Sing Street are all terrific music-fueled movies and this one is no different. Eve Hewson has such an undeniable screen presence and she’s certainly got musical talent as well like his father Paul Hewson, aka U2’s Bono.

So what did you see in September and which one(s) are your favorites?

  1. My favorite film of September is Air as that was better than I thought it would be as I was sucked into the story and the nostalgia vibe. I’ve passed my 52 Films by Women pledge with 54 films so far as I’m going to do some horror this month including some more films by women.

    1. I saw AIR back in April and it’s indeed an excellent movie that’ll surely end up in my top 10 of the year.

Congrats on completing 52 Films By Women already!! Hoping October will be more productive in terms of movies by women.

I can’t believe it’s already October! September went by so fast, the older I get, the faster each month and year goes by. Lol!

Since I saw it yesterday, The Creator was the only new film I saw in theater. I did watch some new movies and shows at home including Ghosted starring Chris Evans and Ana Armas. Then watched Hijack with Idris Elba on Apple TV+. I was in the mood for Fast & Furious films, so I rewatched the series again. Finally, watched The Flash and Meg 2 on MAX.

    1. September went by like a breeze indeed Ted! I just can’t believe how the entire Summer went by just like that.

Oh I’ve been putting off seeing Ghosted as it looked awful though I like both actors. I saw clips of Hijack during my trip this past weekend as my cousin was watching that series. MEG 2 is on my list too as I enjoyed the first, it was a big dumb action flick w/ a giant sharks, what you see is what you get LOL!

I can’t recommend Ghosted, Evans and Armas were miscast and surprisingly, they didn’t have much chemistry at all. The movie’s basically a point of view of male Bond girl. Very similar to another film with the same concept that wasn’t very good, Knight and Day with Tom Cruise and Camaron Diaz.

I thought Hijack was very good, the last couple of episodes were a letdown, though. But it’s still worth a watch.

        1. Ahah okay then I’ll skip Ghosted. I feel like studios just wanna place Evans and Armas together as they have a good rapport off-screen, but the premise just seems really dumb!

Apparently, Scarlett Johanson was originally cast as the female James Bond but had to back out because of scheduling conflicts. I think she would’ve been better even though she’d be playing Black Widow again. They should’ve cast an unknown as the male lead. Having seen Evans playing Capt. America for a decade, it’s hard to believe he’s a regular guy who still lives with his parents. Ha ha! You can tell the studio thought the film was going to be a big hit since they poured some good money into it and included soundtracks with current pop artists. I assume Paramount sold the movie to Apple after they saw the final product. Lol!

This concept could’ve worked had it been made by talented writers and director. It’s basically a story from The Spy Who Loved Me novel. That one was about the point of view of a Bond girl.
