Hello folks, welcome to the first FALL edition of Five for the Fifth!
As is customary for this monthly feature, I get to post five random news item, observation, trailer, actor/director spotlight, etc. and then turn it over to you to share your take on that given topic. You can see the previous five-for-the-fifth posts here.
1. I always like to spotlight a filmmaker/actor who’s having a birthday on Five for the Fifth and today happens to be Werner Herzog’s 71st Birthday today.
I have to admit that I actually have not seen a single film by the German director, though I have seen one that he produced, that is The Act of Killing and saw his acting for the first time in Jack Reacher. My friend Vince and I was just talking about him not too long ago, in which we talked about his interesting love-hate relationship with Klaus Kinski. In fact, he’s going to lend me the documentary My Best Fiend – Klaus Kinski.
Even if you’re not familiar with Mr. Herzog, just reading his IMDb bio would give you a glimpse into his um, enigmatic character. Apparently he saved Joaquin Phoenix once when he was on a car crash, but then vanished after calling an ambulance. Speaking of car accidents, have you seen his PSA on Texting While Driving which was sponsored by AT & T and other phone carrier companies. It’s interesting as according to CNN, Herzog doesn’t even own a cellphone! But the article says, “… he looks at the statistics for texting-while-driving incidents — as well as our smartphone obsession and its cost in simple human contact — and recognizes the necessity of saying something.” Here’s one of the PSA video:

I’m curious what you think of Mr. Herzog and what’s your favorite film that he’s done?
2. Seems that in the movie world at least, the geek shall inherit the earth… with J.J. Abrams as the geek god. Having completed two Star Trek films, now he’s busy working on the Star Wars sequels. I’ve got to admit I didn’t really pay attention to the whole Star Wars VII development… well that is until Benedict Cumberbatch is [rumored] to be cast. Boy, this has been quite a year for crazy casting rumors isn’t it, as I was quite convinced that Bryan Cranston has indeed been cast as Lex Luthor in the Man of Steel sequel and I was rejoicing in that fact! So now Cumberbatch is apparently the latest, shall we say, victim of casting rumor ran amok. Clearly some of his fans had fun making GIFs of Benedict with a lightsaber 😀
Alas, it’s all apparently is JUST a rumor. But I like the first line of the NY Daily News article that debunked it:
Reports that Benedict Cumberbatch was cast in “Star Wars: Episode VII” seem to be full of Sith.
Well, what’s your thoughts about this casting idea folks? Would you be happy with Benedict Cumberbatch joining the next Star Wars movies?

3. This question is inspired by my recent viewing of MUD, in which two boys end up befriending a drifter with a shady past. I’ve always loved films about unlikely friendships. There are quite a few films with this kind of topic, and it spans multiple genres. A lot of buddy comedies often made up of people who didn’t initially get along but ended up becoming well, buddies. That’s certainly a popular variation of that theme, but I’m focusing mainly on dramatic or thriller genres.
Some of my favorites of such films are The Intouchables, The Visitor, The Professionals, Finding Neverland, Mrs. Brown, just to name a few. I also just read Steph’s recent review of My Afternoon with Margueritte, which I might check out.
In the spirit of recommendations, please share YOUR favorite film(s) about unlikely friendships.

4. One of the Fall films that’s been generating all kinds of buzz this week is Alfonso Cuarón‘s GRAVITY. The first trailer doesn’t really give us anything other than Sandra Bullock spinning out of control in space whilst her shuttle suddenly breaks apart around her, and George Clooney‘s voice speaking to her.
This second trailer gives more background to her character, Dr. Ryan Stone, described as a medical engineer on her first shuttle mission (per Wikipedia). Clooney plays a veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky, the only one Stone is able to communicate to in her desperate hour. Pretty gut-wrenching stuff.
“Is there somebody down there looking up, thinking about you?” Kowalsky asks.
“I had a daughter,” Stone whispers, “A little girl with brown hair. Tell her that I’m not quitting.”

I’m even more intrigued now, even before James Cameron calling it “the best space film ever done,” which was all over Twitter yesterday. I’ve always liked Sandra Bullock and this is a role I don’t usually associate her with but I know she’s a capable actress. Cuarón‘s a formidable director, whose Children of Men is one of my favorite sci-fi films. Sounds like he might give us another sci-fi classic with this one.
What say you folks? What’s your level of interest on GRAVITY?

5. Last but not least, now here are two films based on TV shows that definitely piqued my interest. Both of them star sexy, crush-worthy Brits of course 😉
The first one is the BBC crime drama series LUTHER starring Idris Elba. According to the series creator, Neil Cross, the movie adaptation’s script is already written. Per Total Film, speaking at the Edinburgh TV festival, Cross confirmed that a feature film is going ahead, and announced that the plot will take the form of a prequel story following Luther’s early career. Mr. Elba is reportedly set to return as the protagonist. Well I sure hope so, who’s actually going to watch if he’s NOT in it??
Now, the other one is The Man from U.N.C.L.E, which is based on the movies based on the mid 60s TV series of the same name. I love the cast so far: Two impossibly gorgeous guys, Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer, are playing CIA and KGB agents Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin, respectively. The movie could’ve been called Superman Twins or something like that as I could totally see the 6’5″ Hammer as Superman as well.
So far Hugh Grant (who’ll be playing the head of British Naval Intelligence) and Jared Harris have joined the cast as well. I’m sooo glad Henry got the role, I remember months ago that Tom Cruise was originally cast in his role. I think Henry is a better choice as he’s much closer to Armie’s age (not to mention height).
Set in the early 60s at the height of the Cold War, the film is set to begin production next week in England, with location filming in Rome and Naples (nice!). Scott Z. Burns (a Minnesota native!) who wrote The Bourne Ultimatum, Contagion, Side Effects, etc. is penning the script. I think if Guy Ritchie is making this more like a action-adventure comedy like his Sherlock Holmes films, this could be a lot of fun.
What are your thoughts on either one of these projects? Or you can also tell me what other TV series you’d like to see being made into a feature film.
FLIXCHATTER FILM BLOG 
1. Easy, Aguirre: The Wrath of God (1977).
2. Benedict Cumberbatch seems to be this year’s Michael Fassbender; I’d go with either in the next Star Wars film — just not anymore lens flares 😉
3. Midnight Run; plenty of thrills and unlikely friendship (along with some comedy) in that.
4. Way, way lots of interest in GRAVITY. Alfonso Cuarón just doesn’t produce enough film IMHO.
5. I really need to start catching up with LUTHER, otherwise there is some interest. And I’m old enough to remember watching THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E first-run on television as a kid.

You’re right, Cuaron needs to do more films. Even his Harry Potter film was great. I’m even more intrigued by GRAVITY now.
Oh, did you like that UNCLE show? So funny that it starred Robert Vaughn who I remember as Superman III villain, and now Superman himself is taking on his old role, ahah.
Yes, I did enjoy the show, which was a response by the TV network to cash in on the James Bond films. It was fun. They released some of the episodes strung together as movies in Europe, IRRC.
I should check that out! It does sound like a fun show. I don’t think we ever got that series in Indonesia when I was growing up, but maybe that’s before my time, ahah.
Happy Birthday to the German legend. Herzog is one awesome dude. I wish the Cumberbatch news (and Cranston news) were all 100%. I reported on both of them at the CK but it just didn’t stick. Figured I’d at least go for it. I love your mention of The Visitor. It’s an incredible film with outstanding performances. As for unlikely friendships? Let the Right One In. The Station Agent. Big Fish (always have to mention this lol). Midnight Run. The Goonies. I could go on and on. I refuse to watch the latest trailer for Gravity because I want to see no more footage. So I’ll pass. I almost reported the Luther news as well, but I have 2 episodes left and didn’t want to weigh in on that until I was all caught up. Such a damn good show though. And The Man from U.N.C.L.E sounds great, but I’m really beginning to not like Armie Hammer more and more as his career seemingly dwindles to shit.

I hear ya about wanting to come in fresh to a film, I only saw it once and that’ll be it.
I’m still neutral about Hammer, primarily for me Cavill is the one who sold the film for me, I just wish he’s in more films! Nice to see Hugh Grant on it too, he’s quite good in supporting roles.

1. I think the only Herzog movie I’ve seen is Rescue Dawn. It’s pretty good!
2. As you know, I’m not a fan of Star Wars, so don’t really care. But I’m a fan of Cumberbatch!
3. My favorites are Intouchables, Léon and Driving Lessons.
4. I’m dying to see Gravity. The buzz has been amazing and those trailers are awesome. Besides, I’m a fan of everyone involved.

Yes, very underrated.
And it’s a pretty big country, actually. I think it’s among the top 15 largest in the world. Tijuana is about 1500 miles from Mexico City.

1) Dude is old, lets not pretend he actually knows how to text.
2) If Benedict Cumberbatch isn’t the coolest name in Hollywood, then I don’t know what is. All of his characters should just keep his name. Benedict the evil… Benedict the marvelous… Benedict the nerd… they all work!
3) Lethal Weapon. Especially when you take into account their real-life personalities and worldviews, Mel GIbson and Danny Glover make pretty unlikely buddies.
4) I’m having a tough time picturing Bullock in anything other than a chick-flick/indie-woman role. I know she’s done them (The Net, A Time to Kill), just seems so long ago.
5) Never heard of either of these TV shows. But, for Armie Hammer’s sake, I hope Cavil can still fly and pull Hammer’s career out of the abyss that Lone Ranger dropped him in.

I did like Bullock in The Blind Side, but to be honest that role didn’t require a lot of depth from her. I do think she can do it and Gravity, it just seems like it’s been a long time since I’ve seen that out of her.

Yeah, sounds like her role in Gravity is pretty intriguing. I’m glad she’s doing that as when she did that comedy w/ Melissa McCarthy, I’m really not that interested. I mean she’s likable, but I’m not fond of crude comedies.
A movie prequel to BBCs Luther? With Idris Elba? YES!
Man from U.N.C.L.E? Loved the 60s TV show. I still enjoy seeing David McCullum in NCIS.
YES indeed for Elba 😉 WOW, I had no idea that’s David McCullum in NCIS, he looks so different now, ahah. I can still recognize Robert Vaughn as he’s got kind of an unusual face.
1. I think I only saw Rescue Dawn, I liked it but I never had much interest in seeing other films from him.
2. I don’t like Star Wars, I was never really a fan of those movies, they are just so cutesy and silly. But IF Cumberbatch, who is a great actor, will be a part of those, I’ll watch them.
3. The Secret Garden is a lovely example, it’s also about the friendship between kids so it’s even more beautiful.
4. I wasn’t very interested until today, but that trailer really is breathless especially given all that dialogue between Bullock and Clooney. Powerful stuff.
5.Elba needs to be in the movie or there is no movie, I mean it is called Luther 🙂 I’ll definitely see it, though the end of season 3 was so perfect, meddling in the story, even by adding prequels to it, seems unnecessary. Let’s hope that Cavill/Hammer movie won’t be another flop for these two.

1. That’s easy. Fitzcarraldo w/ Encounters at the End of the World in 2nd. I love Herzog. The dude is pretty much the standard of what a documentarian should be as his feature-film works is also amazing. There’s more that I want to see but he’s just so cool.

3. Unlikely friendships… Lethal Weapon. It’s the perfect example of a unlikely pairing. An aging veteran who wants to retire who teams up with a suicidal rulebreaker as they later become the best of friends.

1.) I love me some eccentric nut jobs, I would say The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans is one of his better films and one of Nicolas Cage’s better recent performances as well.
2.) I would not mind Cumberbatch in the new Star Wars film, as long as he plays a Hut 😉
3.) An unlikely friendship film Bernie, also a great dark comedy.
4.) Can’t wait to check out Gravity, please don’t be terrible, please don’t be terrible

Oh no, not fond of Ritchie’s style eh? I suppose it’s an acquired taste. I quite like his work in Lock Stock and Rocknrolla.
I like those films, I just didn’t care for is Holmes.
1. Herzog’s definitely an interesting filmmaker, his style is not for everyone. I guess my favorite film of his is Aguirre, the Wrath of God, such an odd yet brilliant film. Apparently he threaten to shoot Klaus Kinski with a gun because Kinski refused to do a scene in the movie.
2. After the prequels, I sort of loss interest in anything Star Wars related. And with JJ Abrams doing the new sequel, I don’t have much faith in it.
3. I always thought Finding Forrester was such an underrated film. It’s about a kid from rough neighborhood who becomes with friends with an old man played by Sean Connery. It’s probably Connery’s best film before he decided to retire from acting.
4. I’m still skeptic about Gravity, will it have any storyline or it’s just going to be about two astronauts who are lost in space? But visually it looks stunning, should look great on IMAX screen.
5. Never seen either of the TV shows but I’m curious about The Man from U.N.C.L.E movie version. If it’s as fun as the Mission Impossible or James Bond films, then Warner Bros. could have another franchise on their hands. As I mentioned before, I hope Fox will make a film version of Justified, such a great TV show. Also, I wouldn’t mind seeing a reboot of The Saint, the 1997 film version was okay but it didn’t become a franchise that Paramount thought it would.

1. Ya know, I’m not sure I’ve seen any of Herzog’s stuff, although I did watch that anti-texting whilst driving thing, which was pretty powerful stuff and a subject I feel quite strongly about, too.
2. Cumberbatch & Star Wars? Hell yes! I would be all over that. I dunno what kind of role he’d play but I’d be happy with anything to be honest.
3. I’ll go for Die Hard With a Vengeance. Love Bruce and Sam in that! Or maybe Turner and Hooch 🙂
4. Gravity looks great, really looking forward to that. For some reason, though, I just can’t get past Sandra Bullock in it. I think she’s a bit overrated in all honesty and she just seems really out of place to me. Hopefully the full film will dispel that though.
5. I’ve not really gotten into Luther yet, I’ve only caught a few episodes, but I did enjoy it. I do intend to catch up with it. I’m not sure why it needs a film though, whatever happened to just making TV series?

I admire Herzog for doing that PSA, he seems deeply concern about social issues. That’s why he came on board for The Act of Killing because he felt the story needed to be told.

Awww, I love Sandra. I think she’ll be great in it. I know she does a lot of lighter stuff but I think she has the chops. I read that Cameron was impressed w/ her performance in it, I know how he loves bad ass female protagonist, ahah.
Perhaps the creator wants the story/character to reach a broader audience? I’m on board w/ the idea as Idris is a charismatic actor.

Being a purist of TV shows I grew up with as a kid. I’ll pass on ‘The Man From UNCLE’. Considering how badly Hollywood screwed up another favorite, ‘I Spy’ and gave it to Owen Wilson and Eddie Murphy.
All for a full length ‘Luther’ tale. Idris Elba rocks that role!!!
It may sound odd, but I’d like to see Benedict Cumberbatch take on the role of a younger Norman Bates. I think the creepiness factor would work marvelously in his favor!

I was very interested in the Cumberbatch and Cranston rumors. Cranston would be such an intriguing choice for Lex. I still think the script and casting is vital for the Superman sequel. Cranston is a perfect fit.
Gravity really excites me. Still a lot unknown about it but boy those teasers are enticing!
Yeah I know! If only those weren’t just rumors. I’d so love to see Cranston as LEX, he’d be awesome!
I’m more and more intrigued by Gravity though initially I wasn’t blown away by the trailer.
I like idea of Abrams as Geek God, although he’ll have competition from Joss Whedon. Cumberbatch would be a great addition…. let’s just hope someone like Ben Affleck suddenly gets cast in the movie. First Batman, then Star Wars… I don’t think I could handle that 😛 . The Franchise already took a hit from the prequels Lucas made.

2) I want Cumberbatch to not be in Star Wars actually. He and Simon Pegg can stay in the Star Trek world IMO. Nothing against him, but I don’t like all the mixing.
3) Unlikely friendships? Well, “Radio” comes to mind first. There are so many good ones.
4) Gravity is great, but James Cameron doesn’t convince me either way. The fact that he is doing more Avatar movies makes me not be concerned with his opinion. From what I see on my own with Gravity though…looks great!
5) 24. I’m just waiting for 24 to finally get its film since it is coming back for another season. I also wouldn’t mind a Big Bang Theory movie in a similar thread to Harold and Kumar. LOL.

I’m really intrigued by Gravity! That might have to do with the fact I like Sandra Bullock a lot and the movie seems quite interesting.

The Guardian newspaper here in The UK is raving over Sandra Bullock and Gravity.
“Despite her and Clooney’s apparently equal billing, Bullock is most definitely the lead; she ought to be a shoo-in for a best actress nom, especially as she spends much of the movie completely on her own. I say “ought”; who knows whether the Academy’s nose-in-the-air when it comes to sci-fi will deny Cuarón a best director and screenplay shot (he definitely deserves the first). Hi there Paul! Yeah, I’ve been reading all kinds of buzz about that film, nice to see the praises for Sandra, she’s a good actress but ppl always see her as not ‘capable enough.’ I hope she gets nominated too, it’ll prove that her nom for Blindside wasn’t just a fluke.
Btw, I miss seeing Meg in movies. We still see more of Pfeiffer but not her.

1. I am too, not really familiar with Werner Herzog’s films, but he has a really interesting filmography. I once watched Grizzly Man and it was really heartbreaking 😥
2. Cumberbatch will be terrific in Star Wars. I kinda hope that the ‘rumour’ was just the PR team trying to cover that he is in fact will be in the movie :p
3. Btw, I just watched MUD yesterday and I was completely blown away. One of the best films of the year, indeed. And I also really like The Visitor 🙂 About unlikely relationship, Ratatouille is the first that comes to mind. I’m sure there’s plenty of others.
4. I have been waiting for Gravity since 2 years ago!! I put it into my 2012-must watch list (before it got delayed to 2013), so yesss I can’t wait to watch it.
5. I don’t really have any interest in both projects since I don’t really familiar with the series. But maybe I’ll check it out someday.

1. I like the few films I’ve seen from Werner Herzog. My favorite film of his is Aguirre: the Wrath of God.
2. I could see him fitting in well in the Star Wars universe. I actually think he could play either a Jedi or a Sith. He’s great as heroes and villains.
3. Good Will Hunting, The Karate Kid (1984 version), Shanghai Noon and Leon: The Professional are some of my favorites.
4. I can’t wait for Gravity! The trailers have been fantastic, and they’ve really increased my interest.
5. A Luther film sounds really interesting, but Elba HAS to be in it.
