Random Question: What movie(s) have been filmed in your area?

Jason Reitman & Diablo Cody

I just learned yesterday, thanks to Dez @ HollywoodSpy about Charlize Theron and Patrick Wilson starring in Diablo Cody’s new movie Young Adult. The Minnesota-native, Oscar-winning writer is collaborating again with Juno‘s director Jason Reitman (who did the acclaimed Up in the Air last year). According to this anonymous tip on Dezmond’s blog, they’re actually filming the movie right here in downtown Minneapolis! This site that tracks filming locations across the country listed filming dates are Tuesday 10/5 until 10/9. The movie focuses on a divorced, thirty-something young-adult fiction writer (Theron) who returns to her hometown in Minnesota to chase an ex-boyfriend (Wilson).

Well, I’m actually heading to downtown later this evening, but I doubt I’ll run into anything. I’ve never had the privilege of actually seen a movie being filmed up close, the closest thing my hubby and I ever got to a filming location was when we were vacationing in Chicago back in 2007. We were right in the middle of a river boat sightseeing tour when suddenly they stopped the boat because parts of the river and streets were closed down for filming. A few choppers circled the area, some were flying quite low which were pretty cool. It turns out The Dark Knight were filming that very day!!

One of my Chicago friends’ husband happened to work at Hotel 71 at the time and he had told us that the crew transformed their grand ballroom on the top floor to be Bruce Wayne’s penthouse. Unfortunately security was extremely tight that he didn’t get even a glimpse of Chris Nolan nor Christian Bale. The 39th floor of that building does have amazingly dramatic view of the city as the whole place were framed by the floor-to-ceiling windows. Looks like one of the TDK posters was also shot in that ballroom.

Well, have you ever been lucky enough to be in close proximity of a film set? Or maybe you were an extra or know someone who works in a particular movie? Do share your stories!

  1. I don’t know about my current area, but multiple movies have actually been filmed (to some degree) in my tiny hometown in SE Georgia: Buster & Billie (1974), 1969 (1988), and Now & Then (1995). Buster & Billie is dreadful, but my parents were actually in a scene as extras. I can’t remember if they made the final cut or not, though. I remember 1969 filming downtown, and it makes me cry a little today, because RDJ was IN MY HOMETOWN. Movie’s ok. I haven’t actually seen Now & Then yet. Fun question!!

    1. What movie was RDJ filming?? Oh dear, I’d cry too if I didn’t know Gerry were filming in my area and I didn’t know about it!! It’d be fun to be an extra in a film you’re anticipating… but you usually don’t even know about it until it already happens 😦

  2. PrairieGirl

Never been on a film set or location, but who knows, maybe sis and I will run into this filming while we’re bumming around downtown Minneapolis this afternoon, like you did in Chicago ;-D

    1. Yeah, be on the lookout for it. The site says they’ll be filming in the skyway, but which ones??? Do share if you run into Charlize or Patrick πŸ˜€

  3. Dude! Awesomeness!

It would be sweet to have a chance run in with Diablo Cody, and possibly get my JENNIFER’S BODY Blu-Ray signed. That would be utter sweetness in sweetville.

    1. He..he..funny that you call me dude πŸ™‚ But yes it is awesomeness indeed, glad that Diablo is bringing some business to her hometown. Best of luck on getting your dvd signed Andy!

  4. Oh, wow, soo many obviously (NYC…) but in the immediate area: A lot of SATC was filmed right here and Julie & Julia. Julie’s apartment was really close to mine and we use the same subway station. There is also a film studio close by where a lot of TV shows are being filmed.
Walking through Manhattan, I see film sets at least twice a month…

    1. Lucky you, Nes, NYC is probably one of the world’s most popular filming locations! So I’m sure you see famous folks every day that it’s nothing to bring home about.

  5. RDJ was in 1969 w/Kiefer Sutherland and Winona Ryder.

Also, when I lived in Northridge, CA (San Fernando Valley) the campus on which I worked had lots of things filmed there … the front of the library in which I worked is pretty prominent in lots of things, most notably as the front of “Sky High” and “Starfleet Academy” in the newest Star Trek. Before we moved to LA my husband accidentally walked through the middle of shooting for Next … he actually snapped a picture of Julianne Moore before someone figured out he was there and shooed him away! One of the few things I miss about LA…

    1. Oh that’s pretty cool what happened to your hubby, they must not mark the area well enough that people didn’t notice they were filming.

  6. Mike B.

One block from my house they shot the 1980 film “The Boy Who Drank Too Much” starring Scotty Baio. It was a big deal at the time and I watched several of the shoots as well as picked up discarded schedules and the like. It became clear that the actual making of a movie is boring and laborious. It was cold, and Scott looked miserable as he had to lie on the ground or quite a while during this one scene.

I also literally bumped into Jennifer Aniston while they were filming what I believe to be “Picture Perfect” along Central Park. She was running out of a hotel and ran past the crew right into me and my wife (we were on our honeymoon walking by on the sidewalk). This was the summer of 1996 in July.

I’ve seen them shoot a couple music videos – one for Cameo and one for Prince. Those were fun shoots.

    1. Ha! Scott Baio was the R-Patz of his day I reckon. Yeah I think filming probably isn’t as much fun as we all think it is.

Oh I remember you telling me about Aniston, did you say she was better looking in person? She was doing Friends at that time wasn’t she?

  7. I think I told you before that THE BROTHERS BLOOM with Rachel Weisz and Adrian Brody was shot partly in my hometown, at our idyllic lake Palic and in the magnificent Town Hall. CORIOLANUS was shot in Belgrade this year, and back in the 60’s and 70’s a bunch o huge Hollywood epics with Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Orson Welles …. were shot in old Yugoslavia.
Currently, Angelina Jolie is shooting her directorial debut in Budapest which is around 400km above me πŸ™‚

We have huge film studios, but we currently don’t have laws which would lower the shooting taxes for foreign film studios and companies.

    1. No I haven’t heard about The Brothers Bloom, that’s cool Dez. Yes Coriolanus, I’m so envious, didn’t you say you know people who work on the set? I’m curious about Angie’s directorial debut, I’ll be looking to you for your coverage on it Dez.

      1. no, I don’t know anyone who worked at the CORIOLANUS set, but I did tell you previously how I broke into the set of BROTHERS BLOOM because one of my friends works in the Town Hall, and nobody else knew they were filming there πŸ™‚

I’m not sure I’ll be writing much about Angelina’s political agenda. I don’t like when ignorant foreigners shoot films about things they know nothing about thinking they’re doing the right thing. I don’t like people like her, Bono, Sean Penn … they manipulate with facts voluntary or involuntary it doesn’t matter.

        1. That’s cool, Dez, nice to have friends in high places πŸ˜‰

I hear ya about celebs with political agendas. I mean, people are entitled to their opinions but sometimes they go overboard in their ’cause’ thinking like you said, that they’re doing the right thing. Most of them have no clue what they’re talking about but because they’re famous then they get press and thus have the power to sway people to think like them. I for one would never let Hollywood celebs of all people sway my beliefs and principle.

  8. This year Toronto got to play itself twice in CHLOE and SCOTT PILGRIM – both which featured a lot of locations I pass through frequently.

Beyond that, Toronto stands in for other cities a lot, and off the top of my head I can remember when CHICAGO and CINDERELLA MAN were filming near my work.

    1. Hi Hatter! Yeah Toronto does make for an excellent stand in for US big cities. I remember this little-known indie flick starring Pierce Brosnan and Gerry Butler called Shattered was filmed in Toronto though it was meant to be Chicago.

  9. None. Sad but understandable. Rita, Sue and Bob Too was filmed in the nearby town and many films have been made in the cities of Manchester and Leeds but none where I live. If I was to recall films that have been made in the county of Yorkshire then there are a few quite famous ones – Harry Potter (I think all of them), Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Elizabeth, Kes, The Railway Children, Wuthering Heights, Billy Liar, Brassed Off, Driving Lessons, The History Boys, The Full Monty, and most recently This Is England, and Four Lions.

    1. Hey, never say never Dan, who knows you might run into one before you know it. That is a ton of movies that have been filmed in Yorkshire. So is that where you’re from?

  10. As I had mentioned earlier, Due Date had parts filmed in my town (part in trailer where the car flips off the bridge was 5 miles from my house). Transformers, Transformers2, Indiana Jones, The Burning Plain, Year One, Jarhead, The Astronaut Farmer and several others.

I JUST missed Sean Penn by a day filming for his upcoming movie “This Must Be The Place”!

    fun times!

Have a great weekend! Are you going to see Social Network?

      1. I think she mentioned before she’s in New Mexico.

Scarlet, you’re lucky to have so many big films being shot in your town. Did you actually watch the Due Date shoot then? No wonder you’re excited to see that movie.

I don’t know if I’ll get a chance to see Social Network, it might have to be next week. What movie are you gonna see? I just reviewed Secretariat, that’s one I’d recommend.

        1. yes, PrarieGirl, I am in southern NM. more films are being done in this area every year. Santa Fe and Albuquerque receive a lot of attention in northern NM as well.

I did see Secretariat on wednesday and thoroughly enjoyed it. I will be sure to read your review. just about done writing mine!

          1. PrairieGirl

Hi Scarlet, Oh, I loved Sunshine Cleaning, it was filmed in Albuquerque, so was Men Who Stare at Goats, enjoyed that one too. I have a friend there, I should make it a point to visit sometime – like, in snowbird season (winter)! ;-D

  11. Vince

I can think of 4: Stephen Sommers’ first film “Catch Me If You Can” was filmed in my high school in St. Cloud when I was a Sophomore. I remember being in a pep rally for the gym scenes. The cast and crew also often ate late dinners at my friend’s Asian restaurant. The lead, Matt Latanzi (married to Olivia Newton John at the time) was openly carousing with the female lead whose name escapes me. They would often make out in the back booth of the restaurant. Of course, Olivia divorced him not too long afterwards.

When I was a freshman in college, Tony Bill shot the film Untamed Heart with Christian Slater and Marisa Tomei right in Dinkytown by the U of M. My friend Chris was an extra on that set. He also had a bit part in Drop Dead Georgeous with Kristen Dunst and Denise Richards.

Lastly, Ted Demme’s Beautiful Girls was shot in and around Minneapolis. I saw some car scenes by Central Ave near the Terminal Bar. Funny – I was dating a girl at the time but lost her to an aftermovie party with the cast in the suburbs. I’m sure Matt Dillon had something to do with that…

    1. Darn, why was it when I was in SCSU there’s nothing going on?! 😦 I think Sommers is from there, if I’m not mistaken. What’s the Asian restaurant? It’s not Dong Khan’s is it? I love that place.

I forgot that Untamed Heart was filmed here, I quite like that one, very moving. Ha..ha.. so you lost a girl to Matt Dillon eh? Oh well, I’d say it’s her loss!

    2. PrairieGirl

Hey Vince, you’re lucky to have had so many “right time, right place” film moments! I saw Untamed Hearts just to check out all the local filming locations, but it turned out to be quite a good film besides.

  12. PrairieGirl

Whole or parts filmed in/around the Twin Cities: Mallrats, Purple Rain, Jingle All the Way, Prairie Home Companion, Fargo, A Serious Man.

    1. I guess there are quite a few movies being filmed here, I just wish I knew about ’em ahead of time. I think one of Tim Allen’s movies was filmed here too, can’t remember the name though, but I remember seeing downtown Minneapolis in the movie. Oh, and that one with Rufus and Joseph Fiennes was also shot here.

      1. PrairieGirl

I almost don’t count The Very Thought of You (1998) (Fiennes and Sewell) because you only see downtown Minneapolis and the MSP airport for barely a minute at the very beginning of the movie, but I guess that short snippet does qualify ;-D
And Tim Allen’s movie here was Joe Somebody (2001). I just caught parts of that on TV recently and recognized the Twin Cities locations right away. There are a lot of them listed on IMDb, some of the more recognizable places are Nicollet Mall and Target Center. Turned out to be not-a-too-bad movie.

        1. Oh right, Joe Somebody, I rented it just to see the Cities on film πŸ™‚ I should mention that I actually saw Arnold Schwarzenegger pretty close at Mall of America as he was buying sunglasses near Bloomingdale’s. He probably was filming Jingle All the Way at the time, I can’t exactly remember how long ago that was. The dude is big but much shorter than I thought.

  13. My first job in professional baseball was where they filmed “A League of their Own” and “Soul of the Game” (Huntingburg, IN); I bank and play softball where parts of “The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery” was filmed; and they filmed “Back to School” close to where I lived as a kid (Madison, WI).

      1. I used to work in independent minor league baseball, though it’s been quite some time since then. If you’re in the Cities, the league I worked in was the same league where the St. Paul Saints play. I was in Duluth for a year, Madison WI for a year, and Sioux City IA for a year.

I just missed the filming of “A League of their Own” and “Soul of the Game” by a year or two, so I didn’t have any chance to be an extra.

I enjoy your blog. It looks like a great resource!

        1. Hey thanks for sharing John. I’m not exactly a baseball fan but a lot of Twins fans in my office are lamenting the situation with the Yankees 😦

Thanks for stopping by, hope you visit often!

    1. Yep, that’s right Castor. One of my colleagues’ home was actually considered for the film shoot, but lost out to his neighbor down the street because it probably wasn’t retro enough. She mentioned it in her guest review: https://flixchatter.wordpress.com/2010/03/15/everyones-a-critic-two-twin-cities-natives-review-a-serious-man/

Yeah I do wish more movies were shot here. Interesting that Charlize Theron has done at least a couple of movies here. I believe North Country was partly shot in MN, too.

  14. Six months a go, my family and I bought a Bed & Breakfast in Inglis – Florida, where Elvis Presley filmed the movie “Follow That Dream” in 1961. The crew stayed in many places around here. Neighbors say that some of them satayed at Pine Lodge. I’m searching about it because people love to come and talk about Elvis.

  15. Since Chris Nolan went to my uni he makes a point of filming parts of his movies round here (Batman and Inception for sure.) And Harry Potter shot some scenes in our library. Starter for 10 was filmed at UCL too, and my friend is an extra.

Oh and down the road on Baker St at the moment they’re filming Sherlock Holmes 2

    1. Yeah I remember you talked about that on your blog a while back, super cool! If only anyone famous had gone to the same school I did.

  16. Recently, in Tulsa, there was an open casting call for a film that supposedly stars Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, Rachel McAdams, and Javier Bardem. It’s directed by Terrence Malick. I went to the casting call and stood in line for six hours, to no avail. It was great. πŸ™‚ They’ve been filming (they’re finished by now) in Bartlesville, OK, and Ben & Jen have been spotted looking around confusedly as they suddenly realize they’re not on the West Coast, but rather in the land of cowboys and Indians. πŸ˜‰

I kept getting casting call emails from the agency that organized the whole shenanigan, and they just got progressively weirder. “Need bride for feature film,” “Need punk, goth, emo, and scene girls for feature film,” and my personal favorite, “Need beautiful bikini girl for feature film.” Maybe I should become a casting director. Hee hee.
